HOT PRO TIP! If you use oil instead of butter in that cast iron skillet and heat it while the oven is preheating to 400 you can then immediately pour the cornbread batter in and it will come out with that crispy golden exterior while the interior is still fluffy and airy. It’s the only way to do it in the South lol.
All y’all got the wrong idea Frankie isn’t showing you exact recipes because it’s supposed to be an idea You’re supposed to gather the concepts of the episode and then work from there Concepts like: Buy dried ingredients Make a large batch, then portion it out for the week Many ingredients are actually cheaper than you think Etc. The point of the price tag at the end of each recipe is meant to emphasize how cheap you can go
I really admire this series. Tasty, healthy, and affordable food with the most basic equipment. More than that, you have really good technique and you make trying new ingredients accessible.
Even if people gripe about it i love the free flavor thing. any time i get gas i grab some packets. It has saved me more times than i can count in a pinch. Great job on the videos cant wait to see more.
Yeah they go way too fast through a lot of the cooking and really skimp on the details, its fun to watch, but unless you knew what you were doing already (and lets be real this show is "supposed" to be for broke college students, who probably have never cooked in their life) you're going to struggle hard.
If you are struggling, cheaper not to eat out and just buy butter and cook at home without the pretense of a fully stocked packet drawer. I love these videos, but that's not realistic.
Absolutely, and very useful indeed. And after that you could get the actual recipes on TasteMade but they just aren't there any more - bit of a shame! I often cook using by eye amounts but it's useful to have the backup of a proper recipe so you know cooking times etc.
Even though i love this series and i'm addicted to it, i hate the concept of the FREE FLAVOUR. Let's be real, if you're looking into struggle meals i can't ever believe that same human being would have a drawer full of a million different condiment packets, because that implies that you have been eating out or ordering food, i mean that makes absolutely no sense, this ruins the whole concept of the show for me :c I would like it if you guys removed the "free flavour" concept and added the condiments to the end price of the meal, it wouldn't be that much of a big deal, but it would be a lot more truthful to the struggle meal concept.
I increasingly suspect, that it's just a work around. After all how much does a pinch of salt and pepper cost, or a splash of siracha? Almost nothing, but if he would use 'real' stuff he'd have to list it. (And I really would not want to do the math/ figure out how much a spoonful of salt, that sells for 19ct a 1/2 pound, costs)
I work at a convenience store. We have free packets of salt, pepper, mustard, mayo, ketchup, relish, hot sauce, packets of chopped onions, sweet and sour sauce, sugar, sugar substitutes. We Do Not Count It With Our Inventory. We assume some people take it by the handful and we order when we run out. There's no reason people can't have a drawer full of free flavor. Not everyone who comes into our store buys something. And that's fine.
I don't know if i'm being an obvious boi here or not, but planting your own crops saves you more money and you should do it to save a lot of bucks. It only needs water and sunlight for you to grow them, but you can save some cents for other ingredients by getting the stem and planting them. I saw it on a video and I think it'll really help! You buy it once, plant it, and harvest it forever! You can also save time, money, and water by grafting because you save money by not buying too much pots.
I really question where you get the numbers for these prices. From the number of recipes lately that end up at $1.98 or $1.99/plate, I'm almost certain that you just make the numbers up to make it work out like that.
They probably just work backwards from $2 and figure out what proportion of ingredients they need to get to as close to $2 as possible. Unless something has a very specific set of ingredients (like pound cake), the actual amounts are pretty arbitrary.
Frankie:”what is polenta!?- it’s fancy Grits!” Me: (An Aussie): “ohhhhhh so grits are just a basic polenta!?-cool!” (I’ve always wondered what on earth grits were!- for a while I thought they were like a savory oat porridge!🤷♀️😅😂
I love your videos. Just wondering if u Can u do a series on a actual $2 meals. With $2 of ingredients. I understand it's $2 a serving but what about people who have $2 in there pocket and need to make a meal and they have no food. That would be amazing to watch.
63 cents for a tomatillo??? Where I live in the summer, I can’t get them at all. In the winter, I live in the City and can occasionally get them, but they cost an arm, a leg, and my firstborn. I love your stuff, dude, but the cost of living is way lower where you are, and the ingredients are more readily available. I wonder how many of your fans are in the same boat.
You know what is better than packets of sauce? Just buying the bottle and helping the environment. Also, just fyi, if you get vegetarian you will save a great deal of money. Just a thought...
I don't think it's available anymore, but I have a Grundig BL5340 - it's an immersion blender that came with a balloon whisk and a small food processor (not quite small enough to call a chopper). The two main things I think you should look out for are 1) the attachments - do you need/want anything more than just a blender? It's quite space effective to just have attachments rather than full on extra appliances (I wouldn't have bought a separate food processor, but I'm really glad to have one). The sets are often more expensive, but if you'll actually use the attachments it's absolutely worth it. 2) The wattage - a more powerful motor can make a world of difference. Not always, but if you're picking between two otherwise equal ones I'd err on the side of higher wattage.
@@FaerieDust thank you so much for typing all that, that was very sweet of you. Thanks for the advice, i will certainly look out for those attributes when looking for one. 💯

I like this series but dividing something into very small amounts isn’t realistic. I’m not going to be able to buy a teaspoon of spice, or a pinch of an herb or one egg. I think it would be more realistic to have him buy a realistic amount of food and make great meals out of it compared to the ones he making with a little bit of a bunch of ingredients.
Well with spices you the pack/bottle to last for a long time, eggs you buy In packs you can use it in other recipes like fried rice, breakfast, lunch and more. All you need to do is meal plan for the week to know what you need to buy so you don't over buy.
How are they supposed to price the recipes if they don't divide it up into serving sizes? Are they going to put the price of 6 eggs every time they use 1 egg? I think the premise of the show is that you're a bit of a foodie but you have limited funds. So the idea of growing your own herbs or having, I dunno, a pack of cumin in your cupboard because you use it regularly isn't out of the question.
Salsa verde isn't necessarily Mexican. It can be Spanish, Italian, etc. It just means green sauce made with herbs. I'm not saying I know what traditionally goes with Arepas though.
How to make a meal with cornmeal! ... You'll need cornmeal, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient, and this ingredient.

Aye, it's gotta sizzle when you pour it!
In the deep south, it wouldn't be oil, it would either be bacon grease or crisco, or both, but yeah to the rest of it. :)
Freddie, our Preometheus. What fire of knowledge do you bring to us mortals today?
I wish you guys would put the recipes in the description. :(

Where did the mushrooms come from? The beef part went way too fast. Was it on the heat while it was covered? How long?
Yeah they go way too fast through a lot of the cooking and really skimp on the details, its fun to watch, but unless you knew what you were doing already (and lets be real this show is "supposed" to be for broke college students, who probably have never cooked in their life) you're going to struggle hard.
these aren't instructional videos. if that's what you're looking for, you're on the wrong channel.
Yeah, did he cook his food with heat or positive thought beams?
It’s simmer so probably somewhere between low and medium depending on your stove. And cook till it’s falling apart
He added mushroom for that particular dish. It wasn't in the original braise.
"Chilli isnt sexy". I know several people who would disagree with you.
That polenta looked crazy good!!
Why doesn't this have more views?????
Thank you, this stuff is great!
Lol! Love the Gordon Ramsey style of announcing everything!
I will never look at cornmeal and Chuck roast the same way again.
Where'd you get free butter? McDonalds hotcakes? 😂
There’s KFC
Really ? Wtf where, both in France or China I never saw dat.
@@MrLebragard in the states they sell biscuits as well as mashed potatoes at KFC, both use butter :)

Lol my mom always said that about polenta was fancy grits
so you can use cornmeal to thicken anything
Dargon Dude anything that’s starchy
You could also use normal flour or some form of starch (potato or corn, in some chili recipes crunched up tortilla chips)
Duuuude, now that we are in cuarentene you HAVE to have my man from struggle meals back.
now you have to do something with tvp or seitan :P
i wish my skin was as good and my mood was as high as this mans
Arepas-$2 but the cheddar cheese alone was $2.24. Lol, I call bs on this series but I'm still gonna watch them 😂
it’s per serving. You make a LOT of arepas from that dough!
good idea use one of your free ramen chicken or beef packets to add some flavor to the liquid
Frank. I am from the south. You should warm your pan in the oven before you add cornmeal mixture.
Polenta is so delicious ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Puerto Rican’s got arepas too, but we make it with sazon and flour lol

how do you even calculate the price of each plate?
