Hey guys! This time, we're gonna talk about the Hope aspect, particularly in relation to Eridan Ampora, as we consider the ways it relates to both Devotion and Delusion. I hope you enjoy this bit of Aspect exploration! I hope you all enjoy!

i was going to mention the theory about how most doomed eridans are actually decent trolls, and the alpha timeline just got the bad egg

It's not like the guy doesn't deserve it at first.
i feel like the aspects of hope and rage, in a more videogame sense, represent either a laid-back casual playstyle, or a high stakes tryhard playstyle, respectively. while this can help in explaining jake's powers, i think the idea is clearest in gamzee. as a bard, he destroys his aspect, and seems to lack it too. him lacking the aspect of rage would mean it's easy for him to achieve his goals, whatever they may be. this is manifested in his ignorance to continuity, as he appears in various places in act 6 without explanation. it also explains why clowns are so difficult to kill.

yeah, it's cool that you pointed out the ghosts of eridan. i often see Hope as all the possibilites available, of which can be overwhelming too and for him to be there it makes sort of a physical manifestation of Hope be true also. As a prince, he also reflects on Dirk in that Ult Dirk is (i headcanon) most of his possible selves in one and while he has the possibility of being deep, he can also be overwhelmed with the hatred of himself and the control he is "supposed" to have. It seems like Prince's, Kurloz included, are so caught up with their own idea of what is right that they have to take control to make it right, which can destroy their aspect and or destroy with their aspect. Also with Eridan, since i think Hope can also be boundless possibilities, destroyed the choices/opportunities he could've had with his friends by the slaughter of them for not being in his ideal goals.
As a Knight of Hope...
I get it. I get exactly how he feels because I've been in his situation. Where the ones who are older and even your own parents give you terrible advice and abuse their power to hurt you. I understand more then anyone how far he's fallen from Hope as he's constantly violently denied the one thing he desires. Something to actually prove he's worth everything he was given and something to prove he can even Hope for things to get better. He's a hope player that doesn't believe in himself and he suffers at the hands of his "friends" because they all have their own agendas, no one noticed the slowly fading light and the expanding Rage inside Eridan until he murdered Feferi and lost it.
If Eridan could find the type of Hope and Devotion like a Knight can give, someone who actually cared for him and his well being, he could've been the most powerful of the Trolls. I mean he's the Prince of Hope, thats pretty immensely powerful to conceive of.
This is why Eridan is unironically my Favorite troll despite me not only being a Leo but a avid Karkat fan. He's a perfect representation to me of what might happen if I give up Hope. I fought most of my life to get away from the people abusing me and their power and it was only after escaping did I realize just how twisted everything they did was.
And I was consumed by Rage. I lost Hope as the situation became far too dark for regular conversations as most might ask how my mental health is going. (It's going mostly fine. Clinging to the Concept of Hope does wonders for someone)
Unlike Eridan however, I pulled myself back from that Abyss and slowly learned to control myself and believe in Hope once more through my true family and my dearest friends.
Anyway, thats just a Knight of Hope's experience and reasons for why he understands Eridan and his motives.

As Prince of Hope he could literally destroy any chance of hope for his enemies right before their eyes, completely convincing them that all is lost. Pretty powerful.
But yeah. I'm much better in the year I've had since escaping and my new family is much better... but still. The abuse of power shown in both Homestuck and in my own life hit way too close to home when Eridan is one of the most hated characters

I don't understand why Eridan is the most hated one. I understand they hate him because of the things he did but he had a good reason for it, which for me has anyone problems with to see it.

Hope is my faborite aspect...i remembered who, when the MSPA forum was alive, this was a recurrent theme...all this remind me the legend of the Pandora box, where all the evil and illness was inside, and when Pandora opened it, all this escaped. When she finally was able to close the box, the only thing who was still inside was a little bird, who was Hope. Some say who this means who when all is lost, still exist hope; but others say who hope can be a negative thing because Hope makes you "wait" instead of "do" and this is why the bird was in the box in first place.
wich is a True statement, Hope can make you wait and Hope-ing on something dumb and ridiculous, but it can be moving force.
I read/heard somewhere that Hope is Humanity's greatest disease.
Hope for a better future is one of the only driving forces for human betterment in civilization overall. People without hope often do not continue to live and choose to simply give up on life in a variety of ways.
A sidebar here, if you guys would spare a moment...
Alternia's "culture" is more akin to star wars' Sith ideology crumbling in the sustained attempt to practice it. The epilogues mentioned Alternia being a "martial culture," this feels like a misnomer. (Perhaps a development that trolls practice martial arts on Candy Earth?) Alternia didn't pride itself on restraint, only violence of every kind without regard to its perpetrators and victims' well-being. A culture that holds cruelty and treachery is more akin to anarchy and tyranny run rampant.
The terrifying thing about Hope players is that despite how they often either have or inspire delusion, their beliefs are the ones that can shape reality the most, since that seems to be how their powers are geared
And yet, I find it quite ironic that all hopebound players are prone to a form of skepticism that prevents them from using that very power to achieve their desires.
Examples
Cronus fails to believe that, as he is, he is not worth loving and put on a nice guy™ act in hopes of achieving that desire, which ultimately leaves him with no hope of being loved.
Eridan fails to believe what he sees and as such ends up without anything real he is looking for. Whether it'd be an emotional bond or his own aspect.
Jake fails to believe in his friends and as such does everything in his power to protect them from the opposing aspect of rage, but this leads them to eventually claim the rage he long denied them. But where eridan and Cronus fail, with vriska's help, he eventually comes to succeed.
@@bookworm3696 they are a page, and two destructive classes. We haven’t really seen a hopebound, so those contrasts from the nature of their aspect might be from that
@@tidecovill6718 well then how about a real life example? Optimistic duelist himself identifies with the aspect of hope and yet he is one of homestuck's biggest skeptics. He questions and in turn, fails to believe in the paradoxical inversion of each classpect (i.e. the opposite class and aspect sharing similar powers.) This causes one of his biggest mistakes of the active/passive nature of the knight and page.
I really wanted Eridan to have a redemption arc, I thought he was gonna get one when he started talking with Rose
Could Eridan change for them better? Maybe in general but in the context of the Troll’s session I’d say no. By the start of the comic every other member of the session already has a negative relationship with him and seeing as they wind up being the last members of their race I just can’t see any of them being able to reach him and either convince him to change of force him to change. By the time they were on the meteor they were so fed up with him that they were willing to resort to violence to stop him at the drop of a hat. Was his plan basically suicidal? Yes. But they still drew weapons on their ‘friend’ pretty damn fast.
You are missing a bit of context in the fact that: sollux very much so was not eridan's friend. his exact words before fighting him in that moment were "i should have killed you when i had the chance"
personally i feel like if he continued to foster a relationship with karkat (one of the few ppl he seems to genuinely listen to) and perhaps kanaya (they dont have many convos but when they do eridan seems to think highly of her, while she does not) things could have gone differently. of course by nature of homestuck rules we would never see that timeline directly because things in homestuck had to happen That Way in order for it to work or what have you, but its neat to think about. ^^
I too agree with there being Hope for Eridan, and I have a few ideas on how. Judging from his ghosts and Erisolsprite, there's a good possibility that in some timelines where the Homestuck Kids bring him and the other dead trolls back to life using Jane's powers, he may devote himself to trying to change for the better like you said. Why after all he did in the Alpha timeline would his friends want to bring him back to life, he might question. He could then go on a quest of his own, an Eridanquest if you will, and try to get a feel for the new world he's in, get to know the Earth C sea dwellers and their culture and so forth, maybe actually find love in the process...
Given the fact that Eridan is and always has been prime fanfic material within the community, there probably already are timelines where exactly that has happened. With more to come undoubtedly. Look it up in Archive of Our Own, you will probably find something.
I would say that Eridan being cynical (Derse Dreamer) make him not delusional, but desperate and self depreciating.
That he would pursue relationship with anyone thus contradicting his Mask of faith Folower of the Himospectrum, showing that in reality he knows this is just a social tool, he can use it to his advantage, but as a 13 year old kid hr isn't experience enough to use it appropriately.
Eridan most than anything lack direction.
He want relationship not only to feel wanted but also fulfilled.
He is a violet, everything is given to him at every whim, except a real feeling of accomplishment, that has to be earn.
But he dosnt know how, so goes to the most basic instinct, reproduction and survival. Witch influence his search in both quadrants assign for reproduction.
His interest in Feferi is more in her social and physical skills than things she thinks. That is why he wants her in the Red quadrant, the perfect mate. Solux and Vriska are also trolls with very strong personality, social and physical skills.
That is why in part I believe the loss in the troll session is because of Terezi, or more specifically her INACTION, she was the seer of the session, and a mind player, she was the compass to the group, but she never fulfill that role adequately and why she didn't God Tier.
This also feet with Eridan classpect, he is a destroyer, destroy the enemy! But when there is no enemy it destroy itself and those around!
We can also see this with Dirk, he fucks up the relationships with his friends, but the moment English or other villains appear he is an essential piece, showing what he can do, gaining the respect and admiration of everyone, and thus having the opportunity to really grow.
The aspect ideas are some of the most interesting concepts from your channel for me and I’m always invested in seeing these videos. Hope you make videos for the other aspects just like this if you happen to be invested in going into that.
Hope: That which is not, but has the potential to be. So, Hope is the hardest one to define and control because it’s anything you want it to be in that moment.
It’s the worst aspect.
I think it's a good aspect, it deals with how the imagination limits people, and also about belief and devotion
It also deals with the continuation of life, those without hope do not survive for long. Thus, give them hope so that they may continue to survive.

This was all kinds of informative and enlightening, helping to understand how Hope works for both itself and its chosen Players. Also, a special kind of thank you for highlighting the reasons why Eridan did what he did and how redemption IS possible for him. Hope and love are important in human life, but they can become twisted by greed, anger and other sins. Hope without effort and clear goals leads to dissappointment, and love without respect, nor understanding, leads to resentment. Jake's passive behavior and the Amporas' arrogance are dangerous.
With the tests from this channel I got the role “Muse of Hope”. This is fair. I help people maintain hope and have saved 2 lives in this way, getting them to maintain hope and not give up on life. Those who have hope will not give up on the idea of hope upon hearing these perspectives. The action of hope is in persistence and perseverance not in sharp moments (it is the opposite of doom in this way) without doom you have hope, without hope you have doom.

@@poky4669 Personally, I more see him as a Mage of Light since his talent and abilities make up a huge chunk of his character and how he behaves.
He learned his aspect (luck connecting to Light, in this case) through experience and exploits it throughout the series. He understands his luck cycle; something tremendously bad happens which means something amazingly good will happen soon after. The only thing he can really control is when he should decide to toss his choice for luck (e.g, when he sets up the first case in SDR2 with the straw poll.) In addition to that, the only absolute is that his luck is designed to get him what he desires; someone in the first chapter dies even if it wasn't his intended target, his self-sacrifice in chapter 5 leads to the reveal of the "traitor".
When people suggest he is a hope player, it feels like they completely ignore why on earth he's so obsessed with Hope in the first place. His luck cycle is a direct cause of his hope/despair cycle. Once again; something good happens, something bad happens of equal nature. His messed up psychology is caused by his luck meaning if he had no lucky student talent, he wouldn't have his hope/despair cycle either. The hope/despair cycle is there so he can feel some sort of control over the batshit things that happen in his life and his whole "I'm a stepping stone for hope" thing is him role-playing since, by his own logic, him proving to do amazing things with a talent should prove that he isn't a nobody and that other talentless people are capable of amazing things too.
Sorry, that was super long but I have a more in-depth analysis (that's pretty old) somewhere on amino and Nagito is a character I'm super passionate about. I hope all of that made sense or at least shed some light on the subject :)

Since we're talking about Danganronpa, what are your thoughts on Makoto and Hajime/Izuru? Since both of them are called the Ultimate Hope at one point or another.
Like Nagito, Makoto's called the Ultimate (Un)Lucky Student, but unlike Nagito, he doesn't seem to have any power over luck. Instead he seems to inspire hope in others.
Hajime, on the other hand, was told he has no talent, unless he's Izuru. However, after his "transformation" near the end of the game, he's literally brimming with hope(?) energy, without losing his sense of self. My best guess is Bard of Hope

I must admit, as a Fellow Mage of Hope, Devotion and Delusion may just be the best way I could think of Showing The idea of Belief and Faith to what one must hold onto. so Either way, great explanation! always happy to learn something new about the way's the world works.

The idea of Eridan being a developed character isn't a far fetched idea, but I don't think it would really be possible.
Actually, by nature of paradox space, Nepeta says that the self can be all that it is to be.It's worse and it's best.

I think hope exists as ‘things we care about’ in terms of the comic, and the belief in oneself and physical objects (see science beam, brain ghost dirk in game over, eridan’s thought process on the meteor, and so on)
Except Eridan is as destroyer of Hope.
i’d love to see more videos like this with in-depth looks at individual aspects and maybe even the classes, it’s super cool and great for those of us looking for their truest classpect

I know you already did a series on Gamzee but i feel that me and alot of people would like a further look into the aspect other than the mystery of Gamzee. Maybe focusing on other rage aligned characters from other related works to open a greater range of reference for rage players? Either way, love the vid!
I hope (no pun intended) that you make videos about the classes as well. After I did the extended zodiac and started searching every bit of info about what the classes mean in the homestuck universe, I couldn't find or see which one is the closest alligned with my flaws.

By Homestuck logic, you are born into a caste, no ifs, ands, nor buts. My understanding is that any deviations from the caste (or in more specifics, your Zodiac Sign of Birth) is due to you classpect. This could be argued however if anyone has a better interpretation that sounds more solid.

Wanting romance is a pretty hopeful thing and it makes sense that eridan would quite literally bend over backwards to at least try to get it, as well as the delusion that one’s partner will be dedicated absolutely to the other person. Reality is hard to deal with sometimes, and it’s comforting to know that there’s somebody who’s going to be there for you when you need stability when something radically changes your world. Also, as many other commenters have pointed out, please keep political commentary either to the side or make it the focus. Otherwise it seems rather quick and rushed. In addition, some people come here to get away from the bullshit politics brings as well. It’s up to you whether you decide to go in on it or not, but please do be mindful.

I define Hope as being the type of person who believes in God and that they will help those in need, and because of this belief, they are more positive and optimistic for things to get better. Rage, on the other hand, is the type of person that does not believe in a God of any kind, and that the only way for things to get better is to do it yourself, which makes them more negative and realistic.

Be careful that you're not taking it personally when "young white men" gets mentioned along with violence and disillusion. If you're not taking weapons into public places, this isn't talking about you. Also, that was an example, but of course there are many other people who can be pushed to the same fallacies and be manipulated in these ways. It's just psychology, and none of us are immune to it. The important thing to do is not recoil when it's brought up, but to engage with it and actually think about how these things happen so that we can prevent them from happening in the future.
@@neonsilver1936 I did not take it personally (I don't actually really fit the description, but that is not the point*), I would have been just as accusing if OD said "old Asian women". It is the same violation of rational argumentation. I do not recoil, and I engage with that. The problem is the way OD says things, giving them meaning by the wording (unconsciously, I think, see my comment below in the politics discussion), which is 1) potentially harmful, even if in a really small scale 2) Especially jarring in a conversation about propaganda and the way people fall for it.

The implication that you are making is that the comment was made in a malicious sense, as though OD was saying that it's "only" young white men or that "all" young white men do this, and that "every" young white man will do this. That's absolutely not what was said or implied. And yes, it applies to anybody who goes and shoots up crowds, regardless of their demographic. The comment was calling out how there has been a surge of cases where members of this specific demographic HAS done these acts, and that NOBODY should be doing this.

To be fair, if they went all the way in on the politics, it would've been more a political video than a homestuck one. Which I wouldn't exactly object to, but keeping it brief is probably for the best. And I don't think he should've avoided the topic either, because it's an analysis that can be made, and one that is becoming increasingly more important in our society.
I agree, politics is more controversial than ever right now, and perhaps even more controversial on social media sites (And the internet in general) is those passionately for and against intersectional feminism (Which I may have wrongly interpreted from the bit about women and minorities), I don't want to get into it and it's your channel and you can do what you want but it's a sure way to make things super toxic and polarising.

I used to watch your videos, every single time from the very beggining of the hs explained series. I used to comment with Hope that I'd be noticed and I'd help you out with some things, but you know, what? I don't anymore. I know it'll sound like a last message from a person offended by something to the level of denial and tuning out something, but... that's probably it. So yeah, if by this point you haven't stopped reading, please read to the bottom. Maybe you will look into yourself and start thinking about the stuff I'm gonna say even offscreen, maybe I'd do jackshit, but like I said this is only my let's say... goodbye. I'm a Hopebound like you, I used to remember Homestuck by heart, now not so much, yet I still know my stuff and I'll tell you a thing: I know you do your research, but sometimes there's not that much there. You might go all the way with symbolism of a background horse on a page, where SS is thrown into the ocean, but the thing is Hussie wrote Homestuck often in hurry and just didn't give 708 details in one convo, nor has he suggested anything by one sentence in a biblic-long comic.
