Also i install gas lines for the switch heaters on the propane tanks on the side of the tracks for Norfolk southern. Ive asked about you every time i see a conductor or engineer or rail watch and safety man out of berea ohio and Cleveland ohio and i swear everyone has heard of you and even seen you and your tags and a lot of them are waiting for the day to meet you and you sign their hard hats! Such a awesome conversation to bring up! Ive brought a lot of them to your channel! As stobe the hobo brought me to yours!
Maybe that bull was setting up on that Highway overpass watching you with binoculars. It's doubtful if he had a drone or you may have heard or seen it. Meeting you was his brush with greatness!!
Hi Shoestring! Yes I could see the glitter of the gold dust in the pan in the sun light. Love these videos you're putting out of your adventures in Alaska. Alaska's such a beautiful state!
The mention of Dandelions reminded me of a huge domesticated rabbit I saved from stray dogs. He showed up one day and I adopted him. I built him a large pen to run around in the waiting. He would literally stand on his hind legs waiting for me to pick Dandelions out in the yard for him to eat. Glad you’re feeling better.
The rail yards have the omni directional cameras mounted on the yard light stanchions. They transmit videos to a central station 24-7 which is monitored. Any activity can be reported to the Railroad police immediately. I've viewed Matt's videos of the rail speeders, great stuff. I started my railroad career as a tower man with the Erie-Lackawanna Rwy. and worked my way through the crafts. These videos are great, keep up the good work!
Holy S*&t !!! Those 2 green grainers are 2 Old Chicago And Northwestern Cars ! Nice to see something from my home town made it up to Alaska ! I grew up not more than a half mile away from the Proviso yards , listening to them hump cars day and night , I miss that sound ...
The Fugitive is the movie you forgot the name of. Classic indeed. And you're right the more u just stay still in one place the more the ol bones get brittle u got to to keep it pushing. All the best Shoestring!🙏🏽❤
Haven't seen this yet tho thanks very much for posting up longys. Your vids give me something to look forward to when getting home and I guess I speak for most other subscribers here. We are happy to follow along anywhere with any dialogue even if it's not totally railway orientated as we're all rail buffs... Thanks heaps Shoestring and stay healthy 'n prosper 🙂👍
That Alaska Train is cool looking... love the way it is designed..My grandpa was a train engineer. He would talk to me constantly about trains while i was growing up. He even took me to a train yard and described every inch of a train to me. took about an hour...
Hey Shoestring: Hope your doing great in Alaska keeping healthy and warm. watching the trains in Alaska moving on down the tracks. your panning for gold up on the edge of the big river. whether you find any or not you'll still be rich with friends. take care Shoestring and make it back home safe and in one piece. Thank You and God Bless You. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🇺🇲💨
Those railcars are called Speeders. There are clubs and they do hold gatherings. Seen them back in Pennsylvania many times. Have a great time on your journey, Mark. Thanks for sharing. 👍🐾👍
We took the AK railroad ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks around Christmas 4 years ago it was absolutely incredible! Denali was visible from base to peak both days we went by.
Perfect timing for a car to come along right after explaining the AEI detector. I'll be watching for those AEI things on the sides of cars. Thanks for the info.
I don't know if you noticed but there's a camera on the traffic signal light pole on the left side from behind where you were. The camera has a glass dome so I'm assuming it's omni-directional and can rotate 360 degrees.
yes shoestring i could see the glitter in the sand the best most interesting and informative videos on youtube with excellent quality video and sound just amazing shoestring thank you.
I absolutely LOVE these videos because I absolutely LOVE trains. I lived next to a very busy railroad track when I was real young in Gulfport, MS. I remember waking up and hearing a very distant train whistle heading my way. As the train passed our house, everything shook. That's when trains were very long - pulled many cars. Thank you for these videos. ❤❤ By the way, I bet the camera is on that tall pole you first pointed towards. It's high enough and probably wide enough. It wouldn't be on the electrical poles, I don't think.
They are usually attached high up on light standards... convenient because metal light standards are hollow inside so that whoever has the security camera(s) attached, can run electrical (if the utility does not want to "share" their electricity, etc.) and/or FO cable up to their camera(s).
I looked up AEI and sure enough the tag is a passive RF device that is energized by those boxes. An RF signal is sent to the tag which energizes it and it then sends the stored info to the transmitter/receiver boxes. The second you showed us the tag, I was reminded of the R.F.I.D. devices I worked with at an electronic security company. Interesting!
Your Alaska videos have been awesome! When I PCS'd from Germany I got two sets of orders, Ft WaInwright AK or Ft Gordon, GA. They gave me the choice and I chose Georgia over Alaska. Ft Gordon/Augusta was great but always wondered what could have been. Stay safe Mark. “Life was meant for good friends and great adventures.” - Unknown
Watching this and all of Your videos make Me feel better especially when I'm down, enjoyed the ARR yard tour sorry You got busted,I've seen those tags on freight cars the information is read back by satellites in space, cool CN track inspection car,I remember the branch line in Galax VA were I live now the New River Trail NS former N&W track cars used to come town, tore the tracks up in about 86 I think junctions in with the Bristol line on a Wye track near Pulaski VA, nice old RR control switch tower, pot belly stove in there, take care Brother and be careful if You ride ARR rails! 🛤🚂
Yes I saw some glitter, very cool Shoe You are so full of railroad knowledge. You should write a book! I love watching your vids, I've learned so much from you. FYI - AEI means: Automatic equipment identification (AEI) is an electronic recognition system in use with the North American railroad industry. Consisting of passive tags mounted on each side of rolling stock and active trackside readers, AEI uses RF technology to identify railroad equipment while en route.
Looking forward to seeing those railroad inspection cars running later in the series, i love brake vans here on the uk your equivalent would ba a caboose i think , i love the idea of siting in one of those with nice wood or coal stove to keep warm and having some hot cooked food and drink, take care shoestring i love you bro.
Another great informative video from you Shoe sir.your followers thought if the train in this video built up & was going your way it would've become your ride.he he it could"ve..🙂
What sucks is that your bucket is plastered with railroad stickers so I’m guessing that guy in the black truck would have seen those if he came up and spoke with you face to face. The cover of darkness is a beautiful thing.
The tag that the AEI reader interrogates is called an UMLER tag (Universal Machine Language Equipment Registry). The database entry for each car contains reporting mark, car number, clearance info, empty weight, type of car, etc., etc.. It does NOT contain any info about the lading.
That shiny stuff you can see in the pan is just iron pyrites but it's cool to see just the same. Panning is hard work and expect a full pan of dirt to get you just a tiny bit of gold. It's a two handed process with a lot of swirling. Dan Hurd Prospecting is a great channel to see examples.
Years and years ago, in the early 80's, my dad and one of his co-workers took an old Datsun pickup that had been fitted with steelies exactly the width of a rail line. The line through the small town I lived in NW Iowa had been abandoned for years and they took that old Datsun out on that line. I don't remember how far they went but they were gone over night, returning to town early Saturday morning.
Took me a bit to realize you're on University Ave in Fairbanks lol I should know that place like my own hand since I lived there 30 years before moving to AZ.
Just wanted to drop Al line and wish you all the best dude. You are an inspiration man Thanks for video And Hope all your family is doing well.Mind Dem Bulls!
Jail must not have been so bad if you're willing to attempt to break the law. I'm in Alaska and it's definitely against the law to hop a freight train. I love your vlogs especially in my home state. Please travel wisely...
Damn hobo, I miss the days when you used to be a rail blazer. You stayed on the rails. Idk if you will ever come by here no more. Hope everything is going well with you. Good luck hobo
Love the vids. Stay out of the klinker.. Did see the glitter in the gold pan. Just watch the movie you where talking about, "The Fugitive" Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones...Great movie...Keep the vids coming really enjoy them. Used my coffee mug this morning, need A shirt to go with it.. God Speed..
if anyone of those University lecturers looked out the window and pointed to Shoestring, he/she could've said to any student; "Once you graduate you will never be as free as that man EVER AGAIN!!"
I love these hour plus videos 🚂🚂🛤️🛤️ Be safe out there buddy!! Would be neat to see some of the big crab ships out there... How far from the bearing sea are you?

YES my favorite videos to watch on a rainy cold night in Chicago. Thank you brother. Keep up the great work 🙂
I agree! I'm also from Chicago, and I love to watch these videos on a cold/rainy night.
Maybe that bull was setting up on that Highway overpass watching you with binoculars. It's doubtful if he had a drone or you may have heard or seen it. Meeting you was his brush with greatness!!
They don't do nothing they're usually good people
Not all of them are good kinded people some of the bull's will throw the books at you with jail and fines
I’m always in a better place after watching one of shoestrings videos. He’s really the best.
Hi Shoestring! Yes I could see the glitter of the gold dust in the pan in the sun light. Love these videos you're putting out of your adventures in Alaska. Alaska's such a beautiful state!
Seeing you happy and feeling better is gold. Cheers from UK
Well said Robert!

Have a great time on your journey, Mark.
Thanks for sharing. 👍🐾👍
That is an old CN speeder. I road those in the 80s as part of a MOW crew in Saskatchewan.
That demonstration shows the crazy power those engines have - it stopped on a dime, and then accelerated like it was on rails. :-)
I love getting stoned and watching Shoestring videos.. Only plan on watching a little at a time but end up watching the whole thing ..
Thank you! I saw that gold dust glitter! Very nice 👍

I really liked seeing those old green C&NW covered grain cars that were to your left facing the tracks. Thanks man!
Another good ole Shoestring adventure👍
Perfect timing for a car to come along right after explaining the AEI detector. I'll be watching for those AEI things on the sides of cars. Thanks for the info.
Excellent Alaska content.... feels like local knowledge and good sense ... Gold, certainly in the perfect geology for it to be on roots in the ground.
Appreciate you Bro! Luv&Peace Sean&family!🙂🤝🏼✌🏼

Southwest of Denver there is an abandoned but maintained track (Tennessee Pass) near Leadville where people run these MOW machines.
The AEI is also a way to track the cars, I’ve track rail cars that way by seeing the last or latest location.
I love these hour plus videos 🚂🚂🛤️🛤️ Be safe out there buddy!! Would be neat to see some of the big crab ships out there... How far from the bearing sea are you?
Shoestring, how much does your backpack, usually weigh?
I want to say 70lbs (from another video)
@@JennHawk Yikes!
Shoestring are you coming back through Anchorage if so I wouldn't mind catching up with you lunch on me.
