  • Quinze-Vingts is the quarter of the 12e arrondissement of Paris with the Bastille Opera, beginning of Coulee Verte, and Gare de Lyon. It may not feel like there's a lot going on, but there's plenty to see. Help me make better videos at / jayswanson and then find me on the internet in all of the usual spots:

My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Almost four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux
And here's the French wishlist: bit.ly/JaysFrenchWishList
    Thanks for watching!

Hi Jay. Those brick buildings are public housing from the 1930s and immediately post-WW2.
Quinze-vingts is the eye hospital. And Hopital St. Antoine is the place to go for blood disorders.
One of my daughters lived in the 11th for years and another daughter lives in the 12th -- in fact I think you walked down the passage Gatbois on your way to the station, where she used to live. She's now closer to Bercy. We used to live (40+ years ago) in the 13th. And our son is in his 4th place in the 14th.

I really enjoyed the music in this one, and I didn’t know that the Coulée Vert was the inspiration for the Highline! Nice! 👍🏼👍🏼

This was trip brought back lot of memories. I spend a whole afternoon around this area on my last trip to paris. I totally get your sentiments about the brick buildings next to the coulee vert. When your eyes have been spoilt by the beauty of haussmannian architecture, nothing compares. Gare de Lyon has a special place in my heart as we made so many trips from there to the south of france, italy, spain and switzerland. Looking forward to more in this series.

Loving this new series. You are the Patreon Saint of Paris! Think you a romantic view of Paris and anything little different in the architecture won't fit in your vision. Be well and safe

I like the different types of architecture within a city. What's the point of all the buildings looking the same? There would be no need to go anywhere else in the city because you've seen it already where you are. Paris, as other major cities, is growing and living and the changes reflect that. Of course, I don't think all architecture is beautiful, usually just functional, but the contrast can be appealing or at least interesting. I guess I try to fight the temptation to stereotype a city based on what I think it should look like and try to enjoy what it is and what it may become (eg. the Steinway Tower in NYC...hate it, but it's now there, so it is what it is.)

You were right near Place D'Aligre, with it's great Marché couvert which I stumbled upon many moons ago. It's just about 3 streets over from the workout/playground where you took the elevator down. Will be in Paris again next week, just for 3 nights, on our way to Bretagne.

Im glad i didnt choose to stay in the 12th last time i came to Paris . Jay , you should have asked St Antoine, whilst you were in the church, to help you find your stolen goods. He is the patron saint of lost or stolen things. He is one of my favourite saints

Not holograms, just laser heating of the pexiglass at a certain focal point.

Jay, You really don't want to walk through that tunnel under the Gare de Lyon. It just goes to the other side of the Gare de Lyon. I had the displeasure of walking through that tunnel because for some strange reason we exited the Gare de Lyon on other side of the station and used the tunnel to get back on the correct side of the station. We were tired and had a lot of problems that night with the local AirBnB accommodation.

15 20 is dating from middle age (20 because we have 10 fingers + feet), this explains why the metric system was made up. We still say 4 - 20 (for 80) You say 'a dozen of eggs" (why on earth 12 ?), there are 12 hours (originally, the french revolutionnaire broke down the day into 10 hours (but this idea did not catch on), you say a quarantine (from quarantaine, 40 days). The starting of all this is the number of fingers.

Jay, thank you for this interesting tour. It brings up memories for me of standing in front of that gare smoking and being approached by an older gypsy man who i ended up screaming at for him to give Me some euros then his wife had to come rescue him from me. It was kinda funny. Loving the series. Yes, holograms are creepy. Cheers! 😎

I've seen a show there, Cinderella with the Paris Opera Ballet. It's ok, lol. I worked at a concert hall while in university that was especially known for its acoustics (have performed there too, and in other theatres/concert halls in NorCal), so I'm a bit familiar with how acoustics in a concert hall work, and eh, Bastille isn't necessarily the best I'd say, lol
