Just love the power in her voice, really adds to the depth and sadness in this song. Excellent sound from the band, really makes this areal testament to the great swindle perpetuated on the people of Appalachia.
having come from coal mine country in the foothills of appalachia (ohio side). Mining was the only industry of size we had. This song SO embodies the true feeling of that emptiness, once it was gone. And Kathy is as incredible as ever ! I have about 8 of her CD's and will certainly get this one - probably today !
Love hearing songs with trains mentioned in them. Louisville & Nashville railway was absorbed into the giant CSX railroad, and yes, Coal trains are really disappearing due to the change over to natural gas. Great song!!
Love this song and Kathy Mattea's Coal CD and listen to it often. Was raised in southern WV and my Dad was a coal miner for 45 years. Just returned from visiting Welch. I remember the coal trains rumbling down the track across the Tug River....when Coal was King. Would love to see Kathy in concert sometime.
I know this has been around for 15 years but I'm just now hearing it and I want to say that I really like your guitar work and the way you hold N on L and N is just fine.
Great song from a great CD, "Coal". Incidently, prior to the Sirrus, XM merger, Sirrus played this song quite often on the Bluegrass channel but not after the merger. That's true for a lot of good Bluegrass tunes.
Always liked Kathy--but really like this version. Been learning it myself on the guitar and trying to sing it--wow this helps me. Thanks for posting! Does anyone know if Kathy still tours or has concerts?
what album are these tracks from? I've got a bit out of touch with Kathy's music recently, but I would buy this one, These songs are alive. I had fears of Cathy being sucked into the(NEW COUNTRY) black hole for a while, but it hasn't happened.
The recorded version of this L & N Don't Stop Here Anymore on her Coal cd is much slower, more stripped down version. I love this version they do live, but I tend to agree- the tone of the song seems a little too uptempo...
David, I can assure you Kathy is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She is warm, attentive, approachable, kind....a truly wonderful soul. I hope you will have the opportunity to meet her soon.
Mary Muller Thanks for letting me know about that. I just wish Lynda Carter was just as how you described Kathy. Carter is best known as Wonder Woman, and I was one of her biggest fans until I met her in person after one of her concerts at meet & greet. It was a shitty meeting! She was 99% the opposite of Kathy.
How to take a perfect Jean Ritchie written tune and screw it up as a "modern" country-grass song. Cannot recommend this to anyone who cares about the original dulcimer tune.
Ken Hulme A bit harsh there mate, surely? Yes the original is given in a very different mood, but this is no trashing. If you want to hear it trashed, just hear what Johnny Cash did to it.
I stand by my assessment. This "country-grass" version has none of the feel or appeal of the original. Nashville trash, with little resemblance to the original.

This is the best version of THE L AND N DONT STOP HERE ANYMORE I have ever heard. And I heard 'em all. And nonetheless LIVE....WOW.
jean richie's?

Kathy’s singing & guitar playing REALLY captures the essence of this song! Excellent version by a most talented woman!
Doesnt get any better than this. Very lovely Lady. And talented. As well always loved her.

An angel on earth. Beautiful voice. Stay with us !!
That is what is going to help heal this nation, is music like this.
I heard this yesterday on The Folk Sampler. Great version. Always delightful to hear Kathy sing. And especially a great song like this one.
Absolutely beautiful!!👍👍🌹🌹👏❤️💕

This entire album is fantastic.
Very powerful, and it's great to see someone bring the plight of the coal miners to public light.
I’ve always loved the raw power in her voice.
Sung this with some mates in Droitwich and we had a blast! Marty
It just doesn’t get much better than Kathy, as a singer and a human being. Love her.
Great job Kathy! And nice to have Jean's approval!
Bought Kathy's, Coal album on ebay great stuff rockin all night here lol
Well, just listened to soundclips of this cd on Amazon. Excellent! Will be buying this one for sure! Thank you for making such great music.
Woohoo! I've always done a scaled down Michelle Shocked-kinda version of this, but I LOVE this!(running to get guitar.....)

Howdy This is great

The album is called Coal. It's really good!
@Tony2581 a temple and a tipple are way different. I think that a tipple you might take a vow of loudness

They ought to have someone in the band play the tamborine as a percussion. This song sounds like it needs one.

I've never met Kathy before. Can anyone here tell me, is she nice? Nice, as in friendly, pleasant natured?

I somehow did not know it is a Jean Ritchie song.
Nice Job Kathy... But fix the end.
One would like to think so but the folks causing all the problems wouldn't be caught dead listening to Bluegrass..
Good job kathy my great aunt would be proud. Bill Ritchie.
I wonder if Kathy ever cusses on stage?
No! She does not.
Never.
Well, honestly I think the tempo doesn't befit the lyrics but nevertheless it's a great performance. Well done!
Its live,deal with it Mr.Tempo.
If you all will pardon the expression, Michelle Shocked ain't shit...

Each to his own of course.
