Fat Time was my first time I also heard Mike. Pure fire. A great composer and an even greater writer of ballads which showed his sensitivity. Time in Place being one of many for me. A great album from a great artist.
Thanks for presenting this album. I am not familiar with it and I will check it out. I saw Mike Stern here in Denmark last night (31 August 2024). My first time seeing Stern live and he and his band were amazing! The Mike Stern line up last night was: Niels Lan Doky (piano, el piano), Leni Stern (guitar), Steve Rodby (ac. bass), and Paul Wertico (drums). Yes! Rodby and Wertico! The band was very tight but dynamic and having fun! The audience was very receptive, the gig was sold out (and a second gig added). Mike Stern stated that this was the first ever gig this line up ever played! He also said that he only met Rodby two days earlier. The chemistry in the band appeared excellent and Stern had a very positive vibe and he praised the band that was supporting him. His wife Leni is an awesome guitarist as well!. Bliss! F' the trolls like you rightly pointed in your other Stern video.
Mike is one of those guys who on listening to him makes me want to practice. Also, he's one of the best ballad writers around despite the fact that he's known as a chops monster.
Love Mike!!! Lovely guy too....check out the concert at the Blue Note Tokyo with Lee Ritenour and Simon Phillips, available on UA-cam....one of my favourites....they burn!!!! Full on jazzrock!!!! Bob Berg was a monster too. I saw him in Berlin with Randy Brecker and Dennis Chambers....killing!!!!
What a great album - and ill say it again - Mike is not only one of the greatest players of all time. but a modest, humble gentleman. I've studied w Mike for about four years now, and getting to know him has been an honor. He's the most patient and best guitarist and teacher ive ever known. A dirty little secret is that he's also one of the best straight ahead bop players you'll ever hear.
This Mike Stern album was definitely wonderful, really loved it when it came out. Musicianship outstanding, lucky to see him live ten years later with same band except Peter Erskine (substituted by the great Dave Weckl)
Hi Andy, I checked this album out while walking my dog and I absolutely loved it! Then my mind went somewhere else entirely and I got thinking… I’d love to see some sort of video on jazz pianists, particularly modern iterations in the ‘post-Esbjorn Svensson vein’ I want to say? I’d love to hear your take on Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks, Svensson etc. Hopefully I can see my favourites brought down a peg! 😉
Some time ago, Mike Stern used to play every Tuesday night at the '55 bar' (2 drink minimum) in Greenwich Village, NYC. I felt so fortunate to see such an amazing player so close to where I lived regularly. Absolutely stunning band every time. I really miss those times.
in ‘73-‘74 he was in a pop group ‘the Dubonnets’ who played played at a club in DC, when another group, ‘DC Dog’ performed, Roy Buchanan would always sit in and Mike Stern would be front and center watching Roy’s every move….my feelings he was more Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton, not so much Hendrix…..
Totally agree, Andy, a fantastic album and not a hint of fusak in sight! This one album short video idea is good, I would love to hear your recommendations for less well known albums.
@@grayjohn6332 Miles is fairly low key, although still "distinctly Miles"!....but Mike Stern is on blistering form, some wild jazz rock soloing. The rest of the band is good as well. A superior recording, imho, than Miles' studio recordings of that time.
@@philjm3103 I think it was in MILES BEYOND by Paul Tingen...I read this was in Miles' "chromatic Funk" period. A young Marcus Miller was also in this band. Sounded good to me. STAR PEOPLE is another from that era.
Stern's debut, NEESH, was recently re-issued...I was checking it out in my car this morning. Not Jazz-Rock...more like "electric Jazz" in a quasi-Post Bop vibe. Cool compositions, too.
I like the short format looking at a more restricted topic but I hope this won't be at the expense of the long form videos which are what brought us to your channel in the first place.

Another Problem in the 80ties were the Low Budget Digital Recordings by well meaning but underfinanced Labels like Gramavision, JMT, Minor and even ENJA oftentimes. The Music is great but the Sound is often Icy-Clean. So not only G&R sounded Thin but also Bands who did not compromise. It is a bit like listening to old Blues Recordings, you had to listen through the Cheap Sound (Not that they sounded cheap in the same Way), to get the Music. I love this New Format, but you could allow yourself 5 Minutes more. Great Idea!
I will check this album out but I have to say that I never liked Mike Stern's playing. For me he was very much the odd one out partly ruining some of the great music that Miles Davis made right after his return to the music business. What always struck me was a complete lack of imagination in his playing. But tastes differ and I wish everybody else to continue their enjoyment of his music.
I share the same opinion. It’s one thing I did not care for was his overuse of chorus efx. I believe Pat Metheny stop using them because of Stern… my opinion. I did hear one tune he played live and I liked what I heard. I’ll check out this record as well…..who knows, maybe……?

My favourite jazzrock album of all time. Bob Berg and Michael Brecker are just killing it on this record. Their solos are just to die for! ❤
I've been listening to his Standards album a lot recently. Really inspirational,.

My friend BD Lenz said this about him. A true master
Wonderful album from a wonderful player. Thank you for the review. Keep'em coming 🙂
Love this album! Love Jeff Andrews, RIP.
Used to have this on vinyl; excellent album. First time I heard the great Jeff Andrews(RIP) on bass.
Fat Time !..killer player and one of the nicest guys!
Bought this on vinyl when it came out and just loved it..also a big fan of ‘voices’ from 2001..

I've been discovering a bunch of new music thanks to your recommendations.
I will send it to Mike..
Luv it
Now I need to hear that solo you mentioned👍
@AndyEdwards As many short suggestions of albums like this is absolutely fine by me. 👍
The title track is the best one, for me. It’s a kind of a Power Ballad but with odd phrase lengths. Killer.
I was a big fan of Time In Place in 1989/90.
Yes, I like the short format.
Btw, if anyone is "struggling with drug addiction", having Jaco Pastorius as your best mate isn't going to help.

@@DaddyGabby That must have been fantastic to see!!!!
Great album!! I dug it out again when his trolling kicked off recently.
Awesome video have a wonderful weekend Andy ❤😊
Same to you

I shall have to give this one a listen - thanks Andy.
When I heard Wes and Hendrix my mind also went to Ribot (Ceramic Dog).. I have to listen to more Stern..
cheers
Mike Stern on "We Want Miles" is awesome! Also, short videos are fine with me!
keeping to buy it, whats it like?

Listening to Fat Time, reminds me how much I love everything about Miles Davis’s music, except the Miles Davis part.

No...I will always do 4 long form vids a week.
Have you heard of a guitarist named Steve Tibbetts?
Andy, what was your opinion of Stern’s collaboration with Eric Johnson on ECLECTIC?

That makes so much sense. The tele affinity, the sometimes stinging tone - yeah! I love Mike's playing.

Have 3 of Mike's albums and enjoy them very much.
