The video "aggressors " depicts a military training exercise known as "Red Flag" conducted at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, United States, during the early 1980s. In the video, American pilots are seen engaged in a realistic combat simulation against a simulated Soviet-style adversary. The training exercise involves the use of a "Red Team" or "Aggressor Squadron" that imitates the tactics, strategies, and markings of potential enemy forces. As the American pilots taking notes and listening attentively to a soldier pointing to a board, a map of the USSR with Afghanistan annexed is displayed on the wall behind them, emphasizing the simulated scenario. The tail of the F-5 in the video bears the marking "USAF," indicating that the pilots are from the United States Air Force. Throughout the video's 3 minutes and 51 seconds duration, the absence of voice narration and the presence of an atmospheric and mesmerizing electronic track mark the seriousness and focus of the military training exercise.

Does anyone remember the name of a channel that got taken down a couple of years back that became pretty popular uploading Vaporwar content and other historical footage with music? Somewhat like MajorSamm? Actually funny story, I found MajorSamm through this other channel but found the 1st one much more entertaining and emotional through their song choices. Then MajorSamm uploaded a rendition of Headless Thompson Gunner with mercenaries in the Congo, which i adored, the 1st channel was deleted and I forgot its name.
If anyone remembers the name, I'd appreciate to rediscover it.

This video is pure art, thanks for uploading it with that song, it really makes dogfighting a pleasant experience. I can tell it was made around the mid 80s because of the gear the pilots are wearing. Interesting fact, minute 3:02 you will see a F-4 Phantom II (I can't tell if it's an E or a G) and in the minute 3:29 you will see a Tomcat (maybe it was out of place but still cool to watch it) :)

Actually.. Soviets had captured many F-5 Fighters from South Vietnam in intact condition, and all were sent to USSR for testing. There is a video of a F-5 flying in Soviet Air Force camo. And Soviets liked the F-5 and used it as a benchmark to develop MiG 23

      Mig 29

    • @Tigershark_3082
      @Tigershark_3082 Рік тому +16

The Mig-23 was already in development and had even entered limited service by the time South Vietnam fell in 1975, BEFORE the Soviets had even gotten ahold of an F-5
While it is true that the Soviets incorporated some elements of the F-5 onto future planes, it wasn't airframe design, powerplant, or anything like that. As far as I'm aware, they only really took interest in the layout of the cockpit, due to the fact that it was very organized (Having the breaker controls in specific locations, putting everything required for takeoff/landing/flight in a centralized and cohesive area, etc).
Another interesting thing to note: While the F-5E and Mig-21 Fishbed (namely some of the later models, such as the Fishbed L) were similar (with the F-5E being able to best it), the Flogger was still superior in a few aspects not often discussed: Over-the-Horizon missile capability.
As is common knowledge, the Freedom Fighter/Tiger II series was rather simple, as it was designed to be easy to train on, fly, maintain, and very cost-effective. Because of this, it also had a relatively simple radar warning system (if it even had one at all, depending on the operator). Chances are, the Flogger would quite easily blow a Tiger II or Freedom Fighter out of the sky with an R-23/R-24 "Apex".

This has always been an oddly... pleasing video to me. I will admit though, part of me is just a teeny bit sad the Air Force never ended up keeping their Tiger IIs past the mid-late 1980s, since if they did, they *might've* been given the larger LERX and "shark" nose some of the Navy/Marine and export birds got.
The schemes shown here are rather interesting as well, and both reading about them (as well as speaking with folks who know a bit about these adversary/aggressor birds) has yielded some interesting info. One of the most interesting tidbits I learned is that, for the most part, aggressor/adversary schemes post mid-90s/early 2000s weren't exactly based on a specific country's Air Force. Rather, the Air Force, Navy, and Marines kinda just did their own thing with the camouflage patterns.
I'm personally a pretty big fan of the Frog, Pumpkin, Lizard (both old and new-style), Flogger, Ghost (new and old-style), Silver, Blue (old and new style), and Snake schemes (at least when it comes to USAF-specific adversarial camo patterns)

All of these pilots are American. However, the fly with Soviet or foreign tactics, as well as often using foreign markings/insignia + US markings/insignia (namely serial numbers, serial number/bureau number of aircraft, modex, and squadron markings[roundels as well, but not always]). It's been one of the best ways to really get American and even foreign allied pilots (they will participate in in some exercises) ready for encounters with potential opposing forces.
Majority of aggressor aircraft both in the past and nowadays tended to be cheaper American-built planes, such as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Northrop T-38/F-5, but we've also used some foreign-built planes. Beginning in the 60s, we acquired a Mig-21 and evaluated it under the HAVE DONUT program. By the 80s, we had an entire squadron established with the purpose of evaluating and using foreign aircraft as OPFOR (opposing force) aggressors/adversaries: the 4477th Red Eagles/Red Hats. Under the Constant Peg program, they utilized numerous Mig-21F-13 Fishbed Cs, F-7II Fishcans, Mig-17 Frescos, and Mig-23 Floggers. Very few knew about it, and the pilots who were lucky enough to face the Red Hats during exercises likely couldn't tell anyone until the project's declassification in the mid/late 2000s.

In general, it is always relevant, in peacetime, military pilots carry out reconnaissance operations, which often ends in failure, and is not covered in mass media. Any country can be called an aggressor, because each country wants a greater concentration of resources on its territory, and do not care about other countries, and begs the question: Who is the original aggressor? The one who economically suppresses others in all sorts of ways, bringing corrupt politicians to power, imposing contracts that are not beneficial to both parties, but contracts with one-sided benefits so that the opponent is at a disadvantage, and thus forcing the opponent to resort to forceful methods? Or is the aggressor the one who starts the hot stage of the conflict directly, and the one who provokes it is not to blame? It’s a pity that countries still exist and so much money is spent on military needs and the effects of suppressing competing power.

Indeed, which was funnily enough happening around the same time as the footage from this video.
If I remember right, the 4477th Red Eagles/Red Hats (the squadron used for the Constant Peg program) used a pretty large variety of aircraft: Mig-21F-13 Fishbed Cs, Shenyang F-7B Fishcan Cs, Mig-21MF Fishbed Js, Mig-23MS Flogger Es, Mig-23BN Flogger Ds, Mig-17F Fresco Cs, Mig-17PF/Lim-5P Fresco Ds, and possibly some Mig-19s as well from former/ongoing (at the time) HAVE programs.
It only ran for maybe 8 years unfortunately, but it still lives on with likely ongoing HAVE programs

As much as it was kinda cool to see the Skyhawks in action and doing their thing, I'm a bit saddened by the fact none of TOPGUN's Tiger IIs ever made it in. To be fair, the silhouette of the F-5E/F had already been established as something the bad guys were using, but even then, TOPGUN's Tiger IIs would've really humbled Maverick, as well as the other students.
