  • As a UX design manager and design mentor, I frequently have to revisit this topic with UX researchers and product designers who face the dilemma of giving up or keeping on. In this video, I won't just share my personal experience or give you anecdotes - there's already plenty of that on UA-cam. Instead, I'll share 3 specific conditions that every person will go through in their pursuit of excellence and growth, in UX or any other field. I'll also share a way to ensure that you never have to guess if it's time to move on still worth persevering.

Amazing video! Came at the right time, I'm in the middle of "cul-de-sac" and I know I need to move out of here. It's good because it gives perspective about ourselves. When you start your journey, you accept everything because you can't compare it with past experiences. But the more you move up, you can identify things you like, or you don't tolerate anymore. For me personally, is taking months to do a "nav" or a "page" because of stakeholders. Some people like that, but it's not challenging enough "for me". So it's good to know yourself.

If it's a dip: Stay in the job and fight through it.
If it's a cul de sac: change to a better company, interview properly.
If it's a cliff: change to a different career , consider graduate school.

Very insightful, thank you. Been really contemplating this stuff lately as I'm weighing whether to quit my current job, which is basically a cliff-de-sac, and go nuts with UX until I get a job or stay put and grind out my portfolio when I can. But deep down I know what I want to do.

Great video. Similarly to “won’t tolerate” list, I always ask myself :
is this important? (Does the mission resonate with me? Should this problem be solved in the world?)
do I still feel excited about this? (Am I jaded? Do I bring down team morale and energy?)

Really important subject, and interesting perspective you're providing. If there's a conflict, ultimately it takes both parties to be willing to resolve it and if you're the only one who's willing to be diplomatic it's just not gonna work out. But sometimes you find a workaround - I quit a job at a toxic workplace when I realised the stress was getting to me and was, a few months later, rehired as a freelancer by my boss (who weren't toxic) which meant I didn't have to work from the office. I love working from home and not having to deal with the office politics (although just because you WFH doesn't mean you escape them completely...) and my dream job would be a position where everyone gets along and I can do a really good, efficient and effective job without having to cater to people who get out of their way just to make me look bad or my job more difficult...

Your example is a great one on the things that are in your control and that aren't. The dip is a perfect mental model to asses if whatever you dealing with would change if you would add more personal effort - if not and it's truly out of your control it's not worth staying put.

@@vaexperience Absolutely.... I see my situation at that job as a cliff, but once I had jumped I was offered a ladder to climb back up to a spot with a better view lol. It was a rare situation and I was very lucky. Have had more Cul de sacs in my life (not being challenged enough) and making the decision in those situations are far more harder! Again interesting framework to view your situations from :)

@@malinliljeblad8875 hehe totally my scenario. Working in big corporation meant following stupid policy and rules. I still work there but as a freelancer with absolute freedom which is beneficial for both sides. Plus getting paid waay better just because of the company rules.

This is super interesting and helpful. How do you solve the problem, that - when facing these problems - your projects you are working on also kind of get stuck. How do you tell the next company: oh, I basically tried but I failed…. Nothing to show off that I’m proud here….?
Do you prepare sth like a UX portfolio area including all the “dumped” projects? I read about this idea in creative confidence and I really loved it: having a failure area or even a CV of failure is such a great way of lived failure culture.
But the projects from which I learned the most are definitely not high up on the “proud-to-present” list. My problem here: I love working in low UX maturity companies because I love nudging those companies into HCD… but creating projects also reveals the freaking low maturity I was forced to work in. And it seems so unprofessional ? Any advice?

Great points!!I I also would add as Junior designer, in many cases as long the big boss is happy then all good! Although I disagree with that approach but I see seniors and UX Leds really trying to make the boss happy and most meetings not even about the user.
I personally was not surprised since I came from finance background!

Hey, there's a good balance of doing what's right and also picking the right battles to fight for. A good design leader will know when to press on and when to play the long game budging business and their leaders in the right direction. On a good side here is that you recognise the sacrifice to ux that is being made and can then develop your own approach to fighting for user centricity when the time for you to take lead comes

Wow this resonates with my situation. I'm a student and I had a designer in an online study group review my design file. He gave some great feedback, actionable. But then when we joined the study group call he flashed my designs without my consent and proceeded to shame me in front of the others.
I understand I have a lot to learn which is why came to him for outside help, but this seemed excessive.
I don't think this is someone I can learn from long-term.

I think it sucks to say but might have to move on from my wish of getting a UX job one day, graduated in 2020 hardly landed any interviews since .. kept at it, just got started volunteering with a non profit but it's been so long with the whole job seeker life that I just don't know if it is realistic to keep trying yet another year🤔

How would you know if you are in the dip or in the cliff when things are going downward? A person can be in a long-haul dip but thinking he/she is in a cliff or vice versa.

    • @vaexperience
      @vaexperience  2 роки тому

It's about the effort put in - is it up to you and can it change if you put more effort or do something else. The dip means that if you put more effort it gets better, if no matter how effort you put nothing changes its cul de sac, hope that makes sense
