I went so many years avoiding Dark Empire because I heard people talk about how they didn’t like Palpatine coming back. What sold me on the idea was the context, the execution, the lore surrounding it, and the placement in the timeline. Dark Empire is where Luke is finally treated as a Jedi Master. The Thrawn Trilogy shows Luke’s last big challenge as a Jedi Knight, but Dark Empire solidifies his place as the new face of the Jedi Order. An excellent story, and a fitting demise for Palpatine. He doesn’t just die in that story. His SOUL gets obliterated. He can’t come back EVER AGAIN after Dark Empire. It’s definitive in how it handles his death. What doesn’t work for me about the Disney movies is they still have Rey kill him, which was his plan, and that somehow doesn’t have any negative repercussions for the future? She just wins and ignores the rules put in place by the very movie that brings him back to life. They also try to change the Chosen One prophecy. Dark Empire is written in a way that doesn’t negate Anakin’s sacrifice because it’s the story where Luke lives up to his potential and revives the Jedi Order. That’s a major and important distinction. One version honors George’s story and the other tries to extend it beyond what it was necessary.
Dark Empire and the Thrawn Trilogy are must reads for Star Wars Fans. The depth found in those stories is so profound. Too bad Disney has tried to kill it, but their legacy and the perception of the fans about them hasn’t changed. As you said, the new movies have failed to capture the same level of character development and potential showcased in those classic stories. Too bad Lucas Films has become less about exploring new ground and more about selling a product. A water-down version of its former self.

@@juliosalazar7273 it is but not as good as the source. Adaptations are simply water down versions. Don’t get me wrong. @jpsarri you are right. I prefer to forget the movies and read the comics. After all, the best Star Wars characters are the ones off the comics, like kotr and Tales of jedi. Or Republic. Personally I don’t have issue with Kathleen Kennedy or the newest trilogy. I believe there is ample room for all these stories within Star Wars. It is a vast universe after all. That’s why I love the classic Dark Horse comics. They were wild with fresh new ideas.
I’m trying so hard not spend a ton of money on the epic collections on eBay right now lol the first volume of the old republic is so damn expensive
According to many sources, an Omnibus is coming very soon (some time later this year) I would wait for it.
@@jpsarri dude, you’re a life saver and my wallet thanks you haha. Looks like there’s an article about it on CBR
Nice!
Just get a monthly subscription to Marvel Unlimited and only pay $10 a month.
@@Kevsspot Marvel Unlimited is a great option to read on the go. However, not everyone cares about digital. Physical is still the best and most nostalgic way to read.
You forgot Tag & Bink!!! 😀😀
BTW, fun fact, Dark Empire takes place right after Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy. AND...........it's #1 on my list. 🙂
I did not! 😅 I mentioned Tag & Bink in my honorable mentions at the end of the video. Such a fun series!
Dark Empire is definitely one of my favorites. A must read for any Star Wars fan. Cam Kennedy’s art is spectacular! 🤩
@@jpsarri ok, true enough, but I still say Tag & Bink deserve a spot on the top 10. 😁
@gunnerycaptain6158 fair enough. 😊
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Nice Video
Thanks for watching!
@Augie Beck I agree 100%. Fantastic trilogy! From his response to you, I get the feeling he would've included it had it not been an adaptation. And it would deserve to be, for sure.👍🏻
It is a great adaptation without a doubt.
Great video😁, I have a question. Are the darth vader comics Canon?
Those included on this list unfortunately are not.
No Heir to the Empire and Thrawn??
Those are novels. Not comics. I also did not include adaptations. These are strictly graphic novel stories.
@@jpsarri the dark horse comic adaptation is so good though
@@juliosalazar7273 it is but not as good as the source. Adaptations are simply water down versions. Don’t get me wrong. Dark Horse did great adaptations for movies and video games as well, but the stories are not unique. On this list I concentrate on stories which were written and created exclusively for the comics market. The novels are on a level of their own.
Even if Star Wars Republic may be a masterpiece, the master were completely one shot 😅 in the movies, so their chrarisma will ne ver be credible unless you switch amnesia when you read the comics. Too sad ...
If you are only using the movies as point of reference, then you are missing a whole lot. That to me is even sadder.
@jpsarri you are right. I prefer to forget the movies and read the comics. After all, the best Star Wars characters are the ones off the comics, like kotr and Tales of jedi. Or Republic. It is like Marvel, the comics of the 80s to 2010s were great. Then the Mcu destroys everything. Comics have more liberty to write a story they want to tell than a movies drenched by useless decision-makers studios.
I concur, the prequels and even clone wars tended to sell the other masters short.
15:02 that’s far fetched…
Can you prove otherwise?
@@jpsarri the sequel trilogy had no plans and copied/ ripped a lot of better source materials
@@kjtj397 that is just a matter of opinion. The DH comics came way before the trilogy. Do you really think Lucas Films would not take visual cues from available media? I get it. You don’t like the trilogy. I respect that. However, denying the inspiration or the visual references is far fetched. You need to look deeper.
