    Hi! I got a few questions about this, so to clarify - the instability (crashes every few hours) are in the companion software, not the hardware. Not that it's ok for the software to crash, but it doesn't affect the sound coming out of the hardware - the synth itself never crashed for me, with or without the software.

    Mutable ports seem to be becoming the go to for interesting oscillator types. It continues to amaze me the impact Emilie Gillet has had on modern synths, especially as a one company.

    I have noticed something about my habits over the years. I tend to buy based on sound, but I keep based on usability. The synths that have nice well-thought-out interfaces that are a pleasure to use get played and become part of my workflow. The ones that don’t, where I need to remember a bunch of shortcuts or page through a bunch of screens or get out my tweezers or fire up an app to use them, sit around until I sell them.

    • @RockLobster223
      @RockLobster223 2 роки тому +4

      Spot on! I do exactly that too. You need to be able to ‘live’ with the synth, not get frustrated with it, no matter how nice it might sound.

      That's why I tend to favour all my old style analogue beasts of the 70s (including when I look for new machines on the second hand market). Never grew accustomed to menu diving and one encoder- one screen-multi button interface (like the infamous dx7)

    • @lundsweden
      @lundsweden 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, I agree, the 70s style interface has'nt been improved on yet, IMO. Even some of the most useable softsynths have a "slider" per function interface.

    • @ToyKeeper

      Same. To be a good instrument, it needs to be playable. If the interface is more programming than playing, I end up just using presets, and then stop using it entirely.

    I also had a fault with one of the encoders, and the fault was repaired fairly smoothly. Things to note.
    * It was a repair, (not replacement) I got the same unit back with my own patches still on it.
    * They arranged, at my prompting, pickup and return, taking care of customs issues, nothing to pay as a warranty repair. (Even taking into account crossing EU borders)
    * The repair was not speedy, but they're a tiny company, so I didn't expect it to be. I think I had to nudge them once or twice on the forums before the unit was returned to me. I made a point of thanking them via the forums.

    I’ve had this synth for many months. Have not had any issues with power or encoders. I have run into CPU issues with heavy patches. Where this excels is in the performance aspects. Using morph and changing encoders really makes it amazingly fun to play in a larger setup. The piezo makes it even more flexible for performance with all the mappable parameters. One of the coolest synths I’ve played. Yes programming can be hard at first but I think that you get quite quick with it as you play with it. I forced myself to program on the synth as I strayed away from computer and DAW a while ago. Thanks for the review, as usual amazingly thorough and enjoyable.

    Great review as usual, and a super interesting instrument. But the UI… Physical modeling begs for a more tactile experience, both for programming and performing. After toying with Korg’s latest offers with rich control panels (I have the WaveState and OpSix), it’s hard to settle back for much menu diving. I might wait and see if Korg re-issues the Z1 in their new format, as PhyZone or something ;-)

    I have a phi as well, the only issue I had was a low grade hum on certain patches, which resolved with the right kind of editing / tweaking. Once I found a power supply that fit the requirements it was no problem. however the wire is a little wiggly in the back of the unit.
    Like you mentioned, the screen is small, but the software is pretty nice - and until this video I had no idea how to get 3 note chords to happen, so thanks for that !
    The main thing is the sounds are great, and I have no regrets there. If I could spend some time I may figure out how to do some strictly hardware-based editing, because that tends to be my preference on most of the synths I play. From a bit of experimenting I did manage to figure out how to access all the different controls. It just was hard to remember how I did it [so far].
    hoping for some more preset updates too

    Mmh...I...kind of have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand it's rad people are making more physical modeling synths, there's a LOT of really ambitious and interesting algorithms in here, and I love how they gave a stereo input for an exciter. On the other hand, why just ONE stereo exciter? I feel like you'd need more than that for like...a *satisfying* physical actuation interface. The unreliable names on the panel seem like they didn't really have the time to think the hardware interface out, and the three-voice limit plus the...shall we say, "easily overwhelmed" CPU feels a bit disappointing to me.
    I do hope whoever made this stays in business, though, because this seems like a good prototype for a potential, more fully-featured PM synth in the future. Best of luck to them.

  • @alexgrunde6682
    @alexgrunde6682 2 роки тому +7

    I’ve had mine for a bit now, couple things I’ll throw in: only build issues I’ve run into was a hum, but that was resolved by getting the power jack more firmly in the socket. Also have noticed an odd behavior where if I’ve been walking around with slippers a bunch and built up some static electricity, if it discharges while touching the Phi the encoders stop responding and I have to turn it on and off. Not sure if that an error or some sort of safety override,
    As far as patch ideas: one interesting thing with the synth is if you remove the first default mod mapping for expression, it will generate a steady tone. Then you can use LFO’s, envelopes, and the advanced modulators on oscillator amp and pitch levels, the pitch shifter effect, and the sequencer to turn the Phi into a generative synth.

    I really want to love this synth, but for me the whole point of hardware is to have a purpose built interaction that does more than what a plugin can do. Managing an underpowered CPU is a drag.
    The thing is they were so close with the analog piezo element. Add in some analog filters and resonators and you’ve got something that justifies being another box on your desk. So much yet unexplored in digital-analog hybrid physical modeling.

  • @rdean150

    I'm not loving the trend of more companies offering companion software that is not VST compatible and hence not friendly with DAW automation. Virtual MIDI channels are cumbersome enough that I rarely bother with them, and some software can't even be opened at the same time as a DAW at all *cough*ArturiaMCC*cough* Although to be fair, usually the actual synth CAN be fully automated over MIDI, you just have to grab the manual and figure out the right CC. I have not yet finished the demo here, but I don't see any mention of standard MIDI control of the many parameters of this synth in the video index. But given the form factor, I have to assume that one could use a Faderfox or Twister to compensate for the knob embargo clearly on display here. No crisis in the knob supply chain in MY studio lol.
    But regardless, thanks again for the great review/demo, as always! You are a synthesis treasure! We appreciate you!

    I had the Anyma Phi for about 2 or 3 weeks but I sent it back because it had developed some weird Software/Screen bug after a while making it unusable. But after all, I decided to not get a replacement since it just had too many other issues. So as a summary:
    Pros:
    - unique sounds with lots of potential
    - nice idea of a contact mic
    - great connectivity for such small device (standard MIDI ports, USB host and Audio In should be the standard on every synth)
    Cons:
    - no real polyphony is just a bad idea in a ph. modelling synth and severly limits its real-world usecases (I would have loved to try some pads for example)
    - the UI / programming is unnecessarily complex with too many layers and "dead ends" (patches that don't really correspond to the hardware) at every corner; I also have arguably more complex synths like the Hydrasynth or the Vector which are MUCH easier to use
    - the lack of presets really makes it hard to start somewhere, explore the synth and understand its functions
    - the contact mic and/or audio in seem like a mere gimmick since you have to basically design your whole patch around that idea to make use of it
    - the software is messy and convoluted while being the only usable way to programm a patch, which defeats the point of having a hardware synth
    - the display is too small and overcrowded
    - as loopop said: the processor is rather weak (and this is one of the few synths where I actually recognized this as a problem)
    (- as mentioned before: some bug bricking the system completely)
    Overall: Yeah, they should get together with some more experienced company like ASM, Arturia or Novation. They have some great ideas for a synth and it would be a shame if such unique and creative attempts wouldn't be implemented in a better way.

      @@loopop While it is certainly your choice, this saddens me to hear this. Why would you protest reviewing a piece of gear over something like this - a business decision to develop and sell 2 products vs giving away the IP for half of the price? What if you could get the second firmware for $349 and load either or? Would that be sufficient? My guess is no. How about severely discounted? My guess is it would have to be free to appease people. Why not just state your opinion like you do at the end of your reviews as you have done in the past? You have stated on other products where you felt the price was high or what not. This seems like the most sense to me. I have nothing to do with 1010 and have no skin in the game, but this seems rather odd as there are so many companies that make whole product lines based on common platforms around the same DSP chips with little hardware differences, yet running different software. Does that make them "bad guys" too? No one seems to complain about that. I am sorry but this type of attitude comes off as bit entitled to me. I say this with great respect for you, Ziv. You are someone that I think has become a trusted and go-to source by many for your honest and thorough reviews. I just feel this 'boycotting' for this type of reason seems odd and a mistep. I hope you reconsider as I think you would provide a great review - including comments that you feel that the firmware should be interchangable.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  2 роки тому +4

      @@michaelkoehler7441 first, thanks for the kind words and expecting good things :) 1010music are very far from being "bad guys", that's for sure. I don't think we're entitled to *free* interchangeable firmware. I've reviewed plenty of hardware in the past where content or a synth plugin was paid (e.g. Kontakt for Maschine+ (a $200 to $400 upgrade!), Instruments for MPC, etc). Regarding companies that use the same DSP, I know - but usually, at the very least, they have differently labeled knobs/buttons so there's a meaningful difference in the user experience. Ultimately, whenever we buy a digital hardware synth these days, we're just buying a plugin with a custom MIDI controller, usually using the same chip.... But to sell the same box, essentially running a different "app" seems wasteful in these days of semiconductor shortage and an unnecessary expense for users. Anyway, "protest" was just a cheeky term, it's not like I sat at home doing nothing, or picketed their office - I just preferred to spend my limited time that week covering a free firmware update to a 10-year-old product (QuNexus), which I thought was pretty cool of the company to do, as opposed to artificially locking existing users out of what is essentially the same hardware in just a different color. KMI already made a different red enclosure, I'm sure locking out existing Black QuNexus users would have been easy.

      I put off sending it back figuring it might take a long time, but I ended up not using it much until I did, because the fault was bothering me.
      They were actually quicker than Behringer, by about a factor of two - I had to ask for the right wall wart adapter plate for my Crave, when I first got it. That took approximately one season... spring, I think it was.

      @@jantuitman I hope it does, but I haven't had that problem with my original, or the replacement. It sounds like a hardware fault, to me. The firmware is meant to be written to Flash memory, so that just shouldn't happen, if it's working properly.
      Yes, I like it too. I have two Elements (one genuine, one clone), for immediate knob tweaking (e.g. used layered, or one per ear), but I can never get exactly the same sound again, once I've moved a few knobs.
      It does take some tweaking. Metallic sounds tend to come from lots of modulation. I mostly just use one oscillator/exciter, and one filter, resonator or similar, but different modulation from the Expression Envelope. If you try to get it to do too many things at once, that's when it gets out of hand :)
      There's more external control by CCs and NRPNs in the new release too, which interests me but I haven't got around to trying it yet. E.g. an Akai MidiMix is cheap, and can be set up for 32 CCs on knobs and faders, so you should be able to have all of the matrix controls at once, making it more like using an Elements.

      Here's a thought - there was a problem with the arduino core for an Adafruit board, called ItsyBitsy... something, which seems similar to your problem. It was possible to upload a new program to it, and run it, but it didn't survive a reboot.
      It turned out they'd had a batch of boards made with a slightly different version of the Flash chip, and it needed to be treated differently by the bootloader. I guess the program was also written to RAM, to be copied into the Flash chip, then it ran from RAM.
      That was fixed by a change to the arduino core - so it's possible that a similar problem is happening with your anyma phi, which _could_ be fixed in firmware. The problem is whether or not they realize that, or know how to.
      For the Itsy Bitsy, it came down to just allowing a slightly longer delay to wait for the Flash chip to initialise itself, before using it.
      Feel free to copy/paste some or all of this to their support forum. I can find the details again if you need them, but YT would block my post, if I tried to give a link.
