      What is the FTDX 3000 bandwidth on AM?

    • @kingsqueak2221
      @kingsqueak2221 2 роки тому

      @@davidschoenwald516 AM is double the audio passband the rig will handle and the 3000 I believe will yield just shy of 3kHz possibly 4kHz, so that would be between 6-8kHz total in AM mode.
      Most modern HF rigs are around 6Khz on AM, with just a few that go to 8 and old tube boat anchors and SDR rigs can go much wider with most people running 5kHz of audio for 10kHz total width.

    Master class. No luck involved here, just master class. I know very little about electronics but I do enjoy being shown how these faults are hunted down methodically. As well, we are brought through the diagnosis step by step and Peter makes it look so simple. It’s no good hiding, if Peter is on your case he’s going to find you!👍

    Nice video. Over the years, I've learned a big weak spot on ham rigs seems to be the plugs not being soldered correctly to PC boards. I had an Icom rig that had endless bad solder joints on it and I spent a lot of time looking for bad components and not getting much of anywhere, and then noticing the solder joints on the plugs didn't look too good. I reflowed almost every joint in it and got it working 100% eventually. Many other rigs had fewer bad joints, but the plugs were where most all of them were located.

  • @dougn7bfs
    @dougn7bfs 5 років тому +3

    Though it may appear that your re-flowing of the connection to the board solved the problem. I would say it may have actually been the removal of the ribbon cable from the connector and re-connecting it which 'reformed' the ribbon cable and allowed it to mate properly to the connector. If you had removed and reseated the ribbon cable you may have had similar results. I say this mostly because I have worked on other Yaesu radios that use the same connector and ribbon cable type and have had to replace ribbon cables because the plastic in the cable deforms and causes an open connection to it's mating connector.
    Great job of tracing the control voltages and troubleshooting Peter, excellent video!

    Every piece of kit has a set of known issues, believe me, I fix stuff for a living. And this is a know issue with the FTdx3000. The standard fix for this is to reseat both ends of the ribbon cable. 9 times out of 10 that is the fix for no frequency display and no button operation. I would certainly try that before resoldering anything. All the same, it's good to see your troubleshooting skills are still up to speed Peter. It really is a dieing art! ..for anyone interested, the Yaesu FTdx3000 group has a lot of info and examples about this fault.

    First thing any technician would do is go straight to the ribbon connector, years of experience tells you the first logical place to look, when a customer is paying for a repair, the technicians task is to repair quickly a properly.
    Same goes with an auto technician, first thing a customer wants to know is how long it's going to take and how much its going to cost.
    This is a 30 minute job.. uk cost approx £17.50, or you can have someone looking at it for 3 hours getting the same results and the repair bill would be £105..

    Super video Peter! Really do appreciate your talent, expertise, thought process, and explanations. One question though, it may be a trick of the camera, sometimes when it comes to light the camera "sees" a greater intensity than the human eye, which means that what I think I saw may not been the case, but it appeared that on VFO A that BOTH the RX Green light AND the TX Red light were on at the same time. This doesn't seem to be right to me...were they both on, or was it just looking that way?

      @AmishSpecialForces 5 років тому

      Wayne Thompson , that's normal on the FT-DX3000. It means you're receiving and transmitting on the same VFO. You can switch it to VFO B to either receive or transmit so you can work split.

    I think that radio came out in 2003. I'm not sure when that one was built but if it's an older one would you still call it a quality issue if it lasted for over 10 years?

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  5 років тому +1

      No it came out 2013 or 2014 so not that old by now...After 10 years+ I would not call it quality issue.

      TRX Bench I must be thinking of an older model, probably closer to the
      Yaesu FT-1000MP. My error. I repair pagers all day and solder joints on surface mount connectors are a very common failure on them. I enjoy your videos. Thank for posting them.

    Easy fix and maybe not so unusual considering all the solder points on that rig. Usually you stumble across this kind of issue while probing around, but you would have to have a visual on the display to catch it. The owner did not say it was intermittent did he? I would be surprised if it suddenly just quit, I would have thought it would have been intermittent to start with?
    These 3000's are very nice radios
    BTW: Your camera does a nice job... K5AZE

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  5 років тому

      No intermittent problem has been complaint back light just quit.. In a modern production which it is it should not happen. If it happens like here it is in some regards a quality issue which needs to be addressed and as far we heard here in the thread Yaesu has already uprated the weakness. Thanks for comment 73
