For a long time, I believed White Shepherds to be genetic anomalies that were the result of intense inbreeding, and prone to disease.
The white German Shepherd is actually a color variation of the German Shepherd. However, since the American Kennel Club sanctioned shows disqualify white German Shepherds, proponents have established a separate set of standards and continue to run conformation shows based on their own breed clubs.
Feeling that the American Show lines are endangering the esteemed qualities of the GSD, White Shepherd breeders have in many cases established a distinct line.
The creator of German Shepherds, Max von Stephanitz, didn’t include color preferences in the breed standard, emphasizing that colors didn’t affect the working quality of the breed.
Farmers have also favored white German Shepherds since light-colored dogs were easy to distinguish from dark sable wolves amongst their sheep.
But despite this, Nazi Germany began a systematic effort to eradicate the white GSD, as Germans were concerned about perceived genetic health issues linked to the lighter colors.
Thankfully, later advances in DNA research would prove that Germany's fears were unfounded, helping the White Shepherd gain a following in North America. However, even with growing popularity among Canadians and Americans, the AKC still bowed to foreign influence and disqualified the white coat color for the GSD conformation ring in 1968.
White German Shepherds have most of the characteristics typical of the breed, although the selection for white coats has led to subtle differences.
They typically have the self-confidence and work ethic common in GSDs, and they can be aloof with strangers, but once they become familiar with someone, they’re usually cordial.
Not only should a White Shepherd have the ability to work, but it should visibly enjoy it, while showing focus and excellent execution.
White Shepherds usually don’t have the dome-shaped skull typical of German Shepherds, and they also have brush-like tails that hang to their hocks and curve slightly upward when resting.
Their ears tend to be medium, triangular, and upright, and they normally have dark brown eyes and black noses, lips, and eye rims.
White Shepherds should not be confused with albino dogs, and similarly to the working East German and Czech lines, they’re only slightly longer than they are tall.
White Shepherds are marginally smaller than standard GSDs as males will stand 24 to 26 inches tall, while females will be 22 to 24 inches tall, and their weights will range from 60 to 85 pounds.
Probably in an effort to prevent some of the exaggerations seen in show lines, the White Shepherd standard has strict guidelines for certain angulations, and as a result their topline is only slightly sloping.
Like any German Shepherd, the White Shepherd has a double coat, where the outer part is short to medium in length and coarse, laying flat, and protecting the dog from wind, moisture, and UV rays. The undercoat will be dense, short, and soft, and they often have longer fur around the neck.
White Shepherd owners and show ring judges do prefer pure white dogs, however, White Shepherds can display a range of shades including:
Snow white - (which is the most desired), Beige, Off-white, and Cream.
This white color isn’t a dilution, it’s actually the expression of a recessive gene. White manifests because the recessive gene is a masking allele that prevents the expression of standard colors.
For example, a White Shepherd can be genetically black and tan, but the masking gene will make the dog appear white.
With this mind, White Shepherds are eligible for full papers indicating pedigree status, and still have most of the characteristic features of GSDs:
They shed moderately year-round and seasonally, require brushing two to three times per week, and need plenty of daily exercise and socialization.
These are versatile working dogs, well-suited for many activities such as police work, search and rescue, and herding.

Hi. Thanx so much for doing this video about the White GSD!!! That was nice! My boys are my children. They are pretty big actually... My 9 year old is about 28" tall & weighs 123lbs. & my 1 year old, the one with the panda skin markings, is also about 28" tall & he weighs about 100lbs.
Thanx for bringing out that they aren't albinos, because so many think they are deficient due to albinism...

I don’t care who says what about the white GSD. We lost ours last year after 15 years. She was totally perfect in every way. Extraordinary in intelligence, loyalty, protection and friendship.

We had a white GSD for 12½ years. The most incredibly beautiful, intelligent, loving dog we have ever owned during our married life. They broke the mould when they made her. She hated being bathed, groomed & having her nails trimmed but took it all without so much as a growl. Was loved by everyone who met her. Will never forget our precious Zena. ❤

We adopted a white GSD/ Husky mix from a shelter 2 years ago when he was 6 months old . He has traits of both breeds. He is a little bigger than the standard GSD. Super intelligent and sweet.

We just rescued a 2 year old white gsd. Working on training out some bad behaviors ( bad leash habits). We have no urge to show her, just give her a better life and be a happy pet.

Me and my family had to give away my 7 yo white german shepard because we're moving, and sadly the place were going to doesnt allow dogs.

My grandad had one he was adorable and extremely strong! Unfortunetely he died from cancer only at the age of 5 (human years). They recently got a new dog which is mixed breed of an Akita and Husky.

Just got a 10 month old white gsd. What I've noticed in all the pics and vids, but never mentioned, is the pink on their noses. It's always there, but never mentioned. I wonder why?

When I was a youngster I meet a white German shepard breeder in Brooklyn ,New York. He only sold his dogs to NYPD for k9. Out of curiosity I told him if one day u have a pup that's not white give it to me. He laugh and said yes ,mumble to my friend poor kid will wait all his life for that dog. Guess what he had a black and brown female and gave it to me. Supposedly he had over 20 years and never had pup of another color besides white 🤣.

I have a white Siberian Husky with blue eyes and she gets mistaken for a German Shepherd all the time lol.
They really can look surprisingly similar 🤣😂
My white husky lived to 19. I got him at 4yrs old from the shelter. I still have his hair from when he passed in 2011 thinking I would clone him one day (for real). He never got sick, never gained a pound or lost a pound, never lost a tooth...nothing. Was an athletic stud up to about 15 years old. Even then he could jump in the bed of my truck easily and chased coyotes. He weighed about 55lbs his entire adult life. They can be amazing dogs. He lived such a fulfilling, long and healthy life that when I put him down, I couldn't shed a tear.

Nope. And that’s ok...But you say they shed moderately. Not true. They shed massively. Just saying... for people that are thinking of getting a German Shepherd, White or Swiss or Shiloh Shepherd.. And I mean MASSIVELY. I have several White Shepherds....it is a constant that you’ll have to deal with. At home and in a car. Doesn’t mean I love them less though.
