Well, she has nothing against the girl she mentioned many times how smart and similar to her own daughter she was. However, her soon-to-be husband continuously blocks her and doesn't include her, making her anxious anytime she comes up because it reminds her about the division between them and how he's drifting away from her.
Tbf, it had more to do with how Luke handled things than with April herself. Even in this very scene, despite her discomfort, you can see she’s encouraging and wants Luke to nurture his relationship with April.
Maybe he lent it and never got it back? Like with his snow shovel Lorelei took possession of. Or thought he'd not use it and didn't want to store it and gave it away? Hell, maybe he didn't like the memories and gave it away to get the reminders away. All seem plausible with Lukes character. To me at least.
@@khaxjc1 Oh, absolutely plausible: LORELAI: Use your cell phone. LUKE: Uh, I don't have a cell phone. LORELAI: What happened to the phone Nicole gave you? LUKE: She got it back in the divorce. Actually, I threw it in the lake after the divorce. 😂😂 maybe anything that reminded Luke of Nicole made it into the lake, including the cruise luggage.
You know, Luke was not going to go out of his way to do something to prioritize April until Lorelai gave him a nudge, a nudge that he did not in any way compel her to give. As bad as how Lorelai found out about who April was, was, they had gotten past that. Lorelai was encouraging Luke to spend time with his daughter. She was helping Luke throw a slumber party for April and her schoolmates, and she was happy to do it. Things didn't go south until Lorelai met Anna, heard Anna question the legitimacy of their relationship and use that as a reason why she didn't want Lorelai spending any time around her daughter, not talking with Luke at all about the fact that she'd had this discussion and trying to open a three-way channel of communication to get to the bottom of everything, and then goes into hiding on Luke until she drops the ultimatum bomb on his head mostly out of nowhere. So many of their problems at this stage of their relationship are a byproduct of Lorelai doing what she often does - seeing the conflict coming, and running away from it instead of addressing it.
Yes this bothered me so much because as many issues as I had with Anna (who doesn't tell a guy that she's pregnant with his baby???) she basically had the exact same rule for April that Lorelei had for Rory. Lorelei didn't introduce guys to Rory. Max was the first guy she dated who had any involvement in Rory's life so Anna not wanting Lorelei to interact with April until after her and luke were married is totally understandable but she just let things fester and fester and she stewed for months and let the resentment build until it exploded into this ultimatum which of course Luke was totally blindsided by. And she took his refusal to just elope as him not wanting to be with her. She had such terrible communication skills
@@JS-mg1mkI’m sorry, but not wanting Lorelai to interact with April until they were married was NOT reasonable. Because it’s not reasonable to marry someone without them ever meeting your child and knowing what that dynamic is going to be like. It’s not only potentially damaging to the marriage, but it’s potentially damaging for the child as well. Wanting to wait until the relationship is serious is reasonable, but wanting to wait until they’re married is not. Specially bc a piece of paper doesn’t really make the relationship more stable; it only makes it harder and more painful to end it if something doesn’t work out (i.e: their relationship to your child is unsustainable bc you didn’t know they didn’t get along until you were already legally comited to one another).
@@tbbcch1039 No I think it's completely reasonable. If April had been in Luke's life from the beginning it would be different but she wasn't. Anna (as much as I disagree with her not telling luke about April to begin with) had very good reasons for not wanting Lorelei getting close to April until they were married. Marriage IS more stable. It's not "just a piece of paper" it's a legally binding arrangement that, yes, is much more difficult to end which is why people get divorced way less often than they break up. Again, Lorelei had the exact same rules for Rory when she was dating. She didn't introduce guys to Rory. Luke was still new to April's life and Anna had no way of knowing if he was going to stick it out. No sense in taking the risk of introducing another person into her life until the relationship was more established.
@@JS-mg1mk I agree that Luke not being there since the beginning complicates things. But it doesn’t change the fact, that marrying someone without knowing what their relationship to your child will be like is risky at best and irresponsible at worst. Kids are a huge component of someone’s life and therefore should be a key factor in a marriage decision. As for marriage being “just a piece of paper” what I mean by that is that it doesn’t make the relationship any more stable. It just makes it harder to get out of. Which isn’t necessarily a positive in regards to children being involved. And as for Lorelai having the same rule (which I don’t remember if hers was also about waiting until marriage explicitly), if she did, it was just as unreasonable (if not more). My point isn’t that Lorelai did no wrong, just that that rule isn’t in anyone’s best interest. So Lorelai having the same rule doesn’t change my point. Anna couldn’t know if Luke would stick in April’s life, true. But that means there was a possibility he would, and therefore Lorelai too if they married. And the risk of introducing April to an extra person who might end up leaving is much less severe than the risk of that person being permanently inducted into her life without ever testing their dynamic.
I really, really appreciate that Lorelai is afraid of spiders but doesn’t want to hurt them. If I hadn’t loved her earlier…
I hate that she feels anxious and uncomfortable when April is mentioned.

Yeah, well for that to happen you need to be a Lorelei.
