Your comments are so true. In 2016 crossing a large lake that was 90 feet deep, checking the ice every few hundred yards, I put my bombardier through the ice. Water moving over a reef at 30 feet kept the ice thin and we went through. We all got out safely and retrieved my bombardier 4 weeks later.
That "No fish is worth your life" is spot on. Great start to the series with safety. Looking forward to watching the rest. Thank you for the entertainment.
thank you so much . i live in south eastern pennsylvania we dont get much ice last year i got out one night this year i got fresh ice and 4 inches but i got a few more days to go i dont like to go out until there is 4 1/2 inches. i only fish ponds and small lakes and only have a sled and my gear not alot of wieght. my tip is to pack heavy in the truck spair cloths and extra other gear but pack light on the ice. you can always go back to the truck
This a great stuff. Just moved to northern Ontario and will be doing ice fishing for the first time in this climate/zone. Avid and experienced fisherman, but I'm a nub cake when it comes to ice fishing. The timing of these videos couldn't be more convenient for me. Thanks for making these.
Very well done jay. I almost lost my dad when I was like 8. We were ice fishing nd didn't go back the way we can out. Went across the channel and he broke through. I ended up having to go on shore and getting a rope to get him out. Ice safety is definitely#1 on the list.
Awesome thank you! I looked and ice fishing because I was shoveling off a large area on Silver Lake near Sauble Beach Ontario and I thought well I'll put a hole in the ice to bring some water up for the rink and then I thought well I'll go ice fishing through the hole and here I am listening to you you are awesome thank you!
Going back to the early 80's when they actually taught Hunter's Training in Jr. High School, we learned most of what you just spoke on, Jay. Back then I guess there was just a need for courses like that, Hell I remember having my .303 British hanging in the window of my truck in hunting season in case we spotted a deer on legal land. Back to fishing,...This Video, and I'm guessing the entire season of videos should be mandatory viewing in Jr, High's across Canada and the Northern U.S.!! A video like this could literally save a life, and where most people take things for granted if they see a hut or a flag out on the ice, and just head out, chopping a few test holes, checking ice thickness and clarity, all the things you mentioned can save lives!! Good on you Jay, for taking safety seriously and hopefully waking folks up to the fact that ice fishing though thrilling and fun can turn dark and life threatening in the blink of an eye. Not just schools but sporting goods stores, Cabela's/Bass Pro, The Fishin' Hole, The Musky Shop and everyone else should have this set on repeat for the next month,...at least!!! I have really taken a shine to your channel and the way you present your stories. I hope you don't mind if I share this and do a little promoting on your behalf. Have a safe season on the ice, and thanks again for all you're doing to keep the sport, and the people involved in it safe and having fun!! - Dave
What an awesome set up garage! Very nice! Thank you for showing the dangers of ice fishing, not everyone gets that. We have seen so many people over the years make all the mistakes you have mentioned here. They think they know what they are doing, but not always. Mother nature changes the ice all the time. No ice is safe ice they say.
Great series. Much needed, inclusive, and educational. Way to begin with ice safety.. it's so important and not discussed enough in ice fishing culture. Thanks!
Great video. Thank you. Anyone new to ice fishing should definitely watch it and even those of us that have been ice fishing for years can pick up a reminder or two. People tend to get complacent.
Hi Jay. I always love watching your videos! U were explaining about float suit. Other thing about that. U have the flat blow up life jacket. I always tell people use that flat blow up life jacket for early ice incase the float suit is running out of time. Your flat life jacket is your best bet. Pull string and it will save your life along with floating suit. I know it sounds funny but like u said not worth losing life over a fish 👌👍
In NY we have GAS HOLES. Like air pockets, absolutely no warning signs of them. A guy was out alone last year walked a mile out jacket off to keep from sweating, fell into a gas hole, wind took his entire rig. He barely made it back to shore and was hospitalized for days. Also, no test holes near "ice parking lots" we saw a guy get a free wash on the parked 2500HD. Apparently the sheet sunk till it caved.
Have been ice fishing for 50+ years. I have a flotation suit/ice picks/whistle/matches/lighter/ice creepers/throwable boat flotation seat/a throwable rescue rope.
Greetings from Colorado Jay and dude what a great idea for a series. To be totally honest I’ve went through the ice two times, first time was super life threatening. Second time wasn’t a big deal, because of videos like this. With a combination of gear and videos like Aaron’s I learned how to get out in a timely manner. Thanks for the video man.
This is a great start to a great sounding series. I have been ice fishing for a few years and this still helped me learn things that I didn’t know. This is good even for experienced ice fishermen.
Like the way your going with the ice series. U forgot weeds on ice saftey. Toward the end of the yr the the sun heats them up faster and carbon dioxide. Not from Canada but here in Michigan we fish a lot of shallow inland lakes. Love the channel
Awesome video I’m getting my kids into ice fishing with me this year I think this is going to be a great series to watch with them. Thanks for putting it out there
I went out for the first time last year since ice fishing when I was a kid. The husband and his buddies took me out on November 24th on 4 inches at first light. Fast forward 4 hours, the sun in beaming down, it’s plus 3 and we’re standing on 2 inches. My husband came over to where I was standing because he knew I was internally panicking. He walked me off the ice and as I was stepping off onto the shore the ice starting spider cracking around me. I did end up going back out onto the ice almost every weekend after that, but that first experience back really rattled me and I’m mentally preparing myself for the upcoming season. 😂😂😂
Great video jay. One other thing that you didn’t mention is vehicle speed on the ice. If you have enough ice to drive a truck on you need to go slow. The weight of the truck will create a wave under the ice. If you drive to fast it’s dangerous at launches and ridges because that wave can break through the ice.
i think a floater suit is a must! they are much better than that ol red mustang floater suit back in the day. (i still own one) There are some fancy and good quality suits now and if you play out on the ice you should invest in one. Especially if you play on thin ice or out by yourself. Always enjoy your video's Jay!!
Excellent videos. I found them very helpful. I noticed that the playlist currently plays from video # 10 to #1. If possible, can the order be rearranged to play video #1 to #10?
Loved the video Jay! I will definitely have to pass this along to my co workers. Loved the MN DNR posting about ice thickness. They did make one with the Star Wars AT-AT and Godzilla for thickness too.
@@JaySiemens thanks Jay, you are a huge inspiration to this young Ontario angler, you, Clay, and Aaron have gotten me through some rough times. Thanks for the inspiration, tight lines!!!
Nice intro to what is going to be an exciting ice season. I’m really looking forward to the professionalism you bring to your vids. Keep up the great work Jay and team! Upcoming Brookie fishing this weekend North Central Sask.......... depending on ice. Great reminders in this vid!
Wow ! Been thinking about getting into ice fishing ,only twice in my whole life ,these are things I been thinking, my how GOD works & is using you to help someone like me learn safety thanks Jay for sharing ,will you be talking about electronics & all thing ice ? Be blessed
i know you said you are listing some not all things that can cause variations in ice thickness but one of the first lakes to freeze near me every year in utah has several warm springs and people fall through every year being eager to get out there and not careful enough
Starting off well! Nice edit and nice, clear info 👌🏻 When you talked about checking bottom composition I kept thinking of that pike video with Taro. Banging sand! I love the garage too, how big is that thing?
Loved the video Jay! Do you have any tips for a first timer? I want to get started but don’t have the money to afford an electric or gas ice auger. I’m trying to avoid a manual auger. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Purchase a good used hand auger to start out......you can later purchase an adapter for the auger to use in a drill and keep working your way up!! Spud bar is also key .......
I fell through a bog that had shoe tracks in the same direction. I went in thigh deep almost touching my brother and quickly pulled myself out. My car was 1/2 mile away.
Word of advice if you're going solo..go where there's people..i almost never go to a lake where there's no people..usually means no fish and thin ice...lol

small lakes are where its at. Large enough to house fish and have structure, yet small enough to have consistent ice and no heavs
