Actually there are a couple of kawaii/girl metal bands that were created before Babymetal but never achieved a similar success. BM is 2010, Aldious is 2008 (and oh lord how beautiful the members are, it's certainly a bit less innocent and kawaii...), also Mary's Blood in 2009, Momoiro Clover Z in 2009, and the actual earliest would be Destrose in 2005. But the most "kawaii" and "asexual" is definitely BM.
All the way from Rock May Kan with an audience of 150 or even the Sakura Gakuin red brick house performance all the way up to Tokyo Dome with an audience of 55 000. Truly legendary.
And now they have even played in front of the largest audiences in Europe in the biggest Festivals, and also US, Mexico, South America, all in 2024. They were everywhere this year from Rock Am Ring to Download, Grasspop, Pinkpop, Hellfest, this was really the year of their worldwide recognition. It should have happened a few years sooner, but, effin' Covid, I guess...

She really grew on me with time. It was weird to see Yui replaced, despite it being necessary, and change doesnt necessarly feel ok at first, Yui was the smallest and adorable, so Momoko changed the dynamic of the band to some extent, she has a different presence, but she is really a top performer, very expressive, 110% on spot, perfect in choregraphy, and I think she brings a very slight touch of additional "madness" to the band which it didnt have before. I'm really thinking about Ratata with Callout Boys rn, where I adore her face expressions when the 3 girls freeze when the boys do their entrances and departures through walls lmao.
The most original act this century (so far). The energy and professionalism from these girls is amazing. Everything done with almost military precision! Because their act looks so easy and effortless shows how much preparation they must do beforehand. I will never be able to praise these girls or the band enough! To make this all work credibly is a minor feat of genius! Of course this particular format has a shelf life as the girls get older but I hope we'll see more of them in other ventures - they deserve all the success they can get, they've already earned it ten times over.
Stuff like this song definitely has a shelf life and others that are more “look at these Japanese girls singing metal”. But some of their recent stuff and most of the ones before that are far more focused on their actual talent.
Why would it has a shelf life? Because of them calling themselves ''baby'' metal or their youthful looks? Look up anything of Japan and you'll realize stuff like this can go on for another 15 years easily. It's very normal/common over there after all, not to say they're already over their 20s meaning they mostly developed by now and will probably look this way for a good long time, minus all the small things you get while you slowly get older, but that doesn't happen overnight. Small edit: I've just looked up the age of the lead singer and she's 23. So i'm pretty sure they'll be fine for quite a few years, if that's what they'd decide to do.

Their style of music and their group name is Baby Metal -" Baby" as in very young person. Trying to be all little girl cutesy after the age of 21, is I imagine, demeaning and strange if not outright weird for any young woman regardless of nationality. If Baby Metal were to continue with a completely different line up, then of course I would agree that brand/brand name could have the potential to continue for decades but I don't know how the fans would feel about this, though I suspect it would be along the same lines as fans of the band ABBA seeing the group with different members, ie no matter how good they were it just wouldn't be the same! Added to this, no matter how good Baby Metal is performance wise, they are when all's said and done, a gimmick act-a quirky addendum to the metal scene and as such, their star can just as easily fade as soon as there something new and interesting to take their place.
Describe this band to people who've never seen/heard it. 1. It's a kick-ass metal band, but instead of a regular front they have cheerleaders. 2. It's a Challenger SRT Hellcat with a stick shift, but it's pink and there's a teenage Japanese girl driving and blowing the doors off your open-piped Mustang. And her friends are in the back seat smiling and waving as they go by. 3. It's.. I mean.. it's like.. just shut up and watch.
I really think that there are so many of their songs that have been performed so many times that videos like these, that create a timeline of their performances, are really cool to watch so i hope more of these big drops (10+ shows in one video is pretty big to me) come out soon!

These girls are amazing, but this song feels so different than the more adult "headbanger" for example. I'm still to decide if this is bipolar or metal for kindergarden :).
