A lot of people seem to be taking his words the wrong way. He's not attacking straight people. He's attacking the societal norms that force people to hide themselves to be safe, that make the world needlessly dangerous and difficult for certain groups, and put a very small, undeservedly exalted group on a pedestal. He doesn't care if you're straight, gay, cis, trans- he wants to change the way society views people based on those things.
I was born with a vision defect. Parents did not send me to a special school, so I learned in a normal local school, where everyone expected everyone else to be normal. But I was not normal. I was overly cautious, put my eyes close to books, avoided lots of activities which were dangerous to me. And, of course, I was bullied and got my ass kicked often because I was not normal. So, "straight world order" is not just about sexual attraction or gender behavior differences. It is about majority's attitude to minorities. The attitude is usually aggressive, especially in teenage years when kids are full of energy and overwhelmed by hormone storms.
It's such a shame people have misunderstood him. So much. wow - I have been trying to articulate this for a long time - he does it so much better. Beautiful. He isn't slagging straight people or heterosexuality - not at all - he is criticising the structures that uphold the lie that heterosexuality is normal, that it is at the top of some apex or hierarchy of deserving sexualities. Such a hierarchy only exists because we play into it - that is his point. He didn't call himself a deviant in the sense that deviance is bad - seeing deviance in that way is to collude with the straight world order - his use of deviate, and all its attendant forms simply means that he deviates from the heterosexual norm that is anyway a lie.
I think heterosexuality as a social norm is an imposition called scientifically normal. In a truly gender and sexual orientation neutral society heterosexuality would be just one sexuality among others and ther range of sexualities would be far more evenly practiced, We are strongly, from the moment of our births, socialised into one gender or or other and into heterosexuality (usually). Gender and sexuality are social and cultural constructions largely based on our biological sex. There is no neurological ()hormonal/sex hormone/the drivers of sexual orientation) evidence to suggest that heterosexuality is normal ergo is it not natural that it ought be the statistical norm either. That is how I understand it. It is by and large our cultural and social milieu that embeds the accepted norms around most things gender and sexuality included.

+Vanessa Ferreira Now you nailed it like a boss! :) Greetings from Brazil.
Why is he getting attacked and spit on? I thought Europe was enlightened compared to the United States. I am an American, and although I know homosexuals experience persecution, I don't think they experience any more persecution in America than any other person that doesn't fit the norm in some way. People are persecuted because of their weight, height, hair color, skin color, occupation, attire, mannerisms, accent, socio-economic status, education, and any number of other factors. Of course, no one should be harassed or personally attacked for any personal characteristic or lifestyle choice. Then again, none of those things should earn anyone special consideration, either. We all have the right to live our lives and make our choices. And we all have the right to be treated respectfully as fellow humans. We do not have the right to demand that our abnormal, unhealthy choices be accepted as normal and healthy. And that's where society struggles.
People are getting more comfortable with being themselves, but only two weeks ago two friends of mine were attacked by seven men at the central train station in Copenhagen because they were holding hands. Holding hands can be dangerous, walking in a manner that is considered feminine can be dangerous for a man and the same for a woman who presents herself in a manner that is considered masculine. For trans* people it can be even more dangerous. Don't be fooled by seeing gay people out and about

Homosexuals are no better than heterosexuals and heterosexuals are no better than homosexuals. People need to judge people as individuals and not by gender or sexuality etc. I say it because there is this behavior of applauding anybody who says "I'm gay" and they get responses like "you are a role model" "you are an inspiration" why? He is just gay. Sexuality shouldn't give you benefits or applauses only what you contribute to the world sexuality is just that sexuality.
+Enrique Godinez I like how this guy is going to a bunch of gay ted talks and copypasting the same idiocy over and over again. Straight and non-straight people are not treated the same. There are still a lot of rights non-straight people don't have and are still fighting for today. I'm putting myself at a disadvantage in this society when I'm openly accepting who I am, allowing the possibility that straight people in power who have a bias will discriminate against me. I'm statistically opening myself up to a higher percentage of violence and depending on where I live, even getting killed (especially if I'm trans). So please, stop the whining. Educate yourself.

The accused claimed she called him a "Mog Perker", which is a derogatory term for someone from the Middle East. Which would be a strange claim to make if the accused wasn't from the Middle East. What actual ideology promotes intolerance towards LGBT and is synonymous with the Middle East? Hint: It's not called the Straight World Order.

Respectful treatment of homosexuals? No problem. Just keep in mind: roughly 97% of people are heterosexual, and heterosexuality is an essential, a necessity. Also: Diversity is not intrinsically positive. If you live in a society in which only half the people bathed regularly, would that be better than one in which everyone bathed regularly?

so other wise "when in doubt blame the straight people "for all your physical pain and suffering !?!? what ever happened to gay on gay violence what makes that ok
You misrepresented his argument, and then disagreed with your own misrepresentation. That's called a strawman. He's not blaming straight people, he's saying that the straight world order is harmful, even to straight people, and even uses examples of straight people who have suffered because of it. Maybe you should watch it again and take more careful notes. And while you are doing that, could you point out where anybody said that gay on gay violence is ok? I missed that part entirely, even after watching a second time.
if you knew that gay on gay violence actually did happen would you think differently !!!!!!!!,my point being stating the most obsolete question when gays stick it to other gays (ex.domestic assault )
Prove there's a god. That's right, you can't, just from you calling it a belief, a faith. That just means it not substantiated, even acknowledged by you, as if you did go around, "I've seen him, this that, whatever, do you know where those people are? The mental asylum. Actually in the neo liberal economics, health has been run down and they're on the streets and some get shot there, because they need help and don't get it.
Ben A I think it's fairly clear that the concept of TED (and TEDx) has evolved throughout the years. Funny you'd nitpick this talk in particular. Perhaps it has to do with your last clause, "which might not even exist". Are you threatened by non-heterosexual people calling heterosexuals out on their bullshit?
K. Baum What bullshit? You cannot be angry at people for being privileged. What you are really saying is that you are jealous. And he doesn't get any deeper than that. He could have explained causes and then given solutions. Trash!
Ben A You seem to be deliberately misunderstanding his words, and I hope you are, because if all you can really get from this talk is "he's jealous/whining/angry at straight people", you've got a serious problem. But hey, I'm sure you're just unwilling to see things from a perspective that doesn't cater to you, which is a totally normal psychological flaw. Just make sure you don't use it to hurt people (emotionally or physically), like the speaker exemplified.
Oh, no, I get it. People who adhere to traditional gender roles hurt you, therefore, traditional gender roles are bad. Same way as people who adhere to communism hurt other people, therefore communism was bad. Or same as people who like to play videogames hurt other people by going on a killing spree, therefore videogames are bad. Or same as people who listen to Black Metal like to burn down churches, therefore Black Metal is bad. Sad thing is, you may even think that you're proposing something new and groundbreaking. Good luck with your "war", general.
To be fair, dude, you've mistaken people adhering to gender roles, for people who discriminate against others who DON'T adhere to traditional gender roles. Like, these are very blatantly different things.
Lumidingo Oh, so you want to have a civil discussion with a "dumb" person such as I? Well, I don't want to have a civil discussion with you. Hope you don't mind.
And now, because I've called a comment you made 'dumb', you're inferring that I'm calling you, yourself, 'dumb'. Which I very clearly didn't do. I think you need to take more time analyzing the content you are watching or reading, because it seems that you jump to conclusions that don't really respond to what's actually being said.
A lot of people seem to be taking his words the wrong way. He's not attacking straight people. He's attacking the societal norms that force people to hide themselves to be safe, that make the world needlessly dangerous and difficult for certain groups, and put a very small, undeservedly exalted group on a pedestal. if david had kept his long hair and swiviling hips he'd probably be dead now. he was trying to survive. this narrator does not appear the least bit feminine and should not speak for men who are. the narrator can pass for straight.
cammer i don’t get your point..?
Respectful treatment of homosexuals? No problem.
Just keep in mind: roughly 97% of people are heterosexual, and heterosexuality is an essential, a necessity.
Also: Diversity is not intrinsically positive. If you live in a society in which only half the people bathed regularly, would that be better than one in which everyone bathed regularly?
+SilvanaDil wtf
+Shy Rush
Which part confused you?
bad and misleading comparison.
by the way , it is a completely wrong and silly point
+Shy Rush
We're each entitled to our opinions.
+SilvanaDil its cool that ur feeling this way as long as u r aware of the fact that having an
simplistic , unsympathetic and regressive opinion just for the sake of having an opinion is completely worthless ...
have a nice day. bye
so other wise "when in doubt blame the straight people "for all your physical pain and suffering !?!?
what ever happened to gay on gay violence what makes that ok
You misrepresented his argument, and then disagreed with your own misrepresentation. That's called a strawman.
He's not blaming straight people, he's saying that the straight world order is harmful, even to straight people, and even uses examples of straight people who have suffered because of it. Maybe you should watch it again and take more careful notes.
And while you are doing that, could you point out where anybody said that gay on gay violence is ok? I missed that part entirely, even after watching a second time.
Lillian Graham Gay on gay violence? That's funny. You seem to think that getting racist arguments and replacing "black" with "gay" will work.
if you knew that gay on gay violence actually did happen would you think differently !!!!!!!!,my point being stating the most obsolete question when gays stick it to other gays (ex.domestic assault )
Gay in gay violence? In what world?
today's world
Repent from your sin!
Up your bum!
Lol
This is not a good Tedtalk. This is a rant. Ted talk is about science and intellectualism.
No. This is a TEDx talk.
K. Baum
TEd is for progress and scientific debate; it isn't a place to go and rant about heterosexual privileges which might not even exist.
Ben A
I think it's fairly clear that the concept of TED (and TEDx) has evolved throughout the years. Funny you'd nitpick this talk in particular. Perhaps it has to do with your last clause, "which might not even exist". Are you threatened by non-heterosexual people calling heterosexuals out on their bullshit?
K. Baum
What bullshit? You cannot be angry at people for being privileged. What you are really saying is that you are jealous. And he doesn't get any deeper than that. He could have explained causes and then given solutions. Trash!
Ben A
You seem to be deliberately misunderstanding his words, and I hope you are, because if all you can really get from this talk is "he's jealous/whining/angry at straight people", you've got a serious problem.
This. This is the dumbest comment on UA-cam.
Lumidingo No! Yours is!
