The doors not staying up is not "realism." It's a flaw that would have been very easy to overcome with a fold-out or insertable static strut on each side to give buyers the option to put this expensive model into its coolest pose.
i fixed my doors, well one of them, got that 4X1 plate (left over from the first movie build) and stuck it to the bottom of the 2 parts that stuck out that have the pins in them. it stops it from falling down, and isn't noticeable when added as it is black. obliviously this is a temp solution.
I am surprised nobody mentioned the absence of Marty's baseball cap... It's an iconic part of his 'future' outfit. Shame they didn't include that.
Great comment! I have a red hat from another set and it completes the look!
The model set we're talking about here is in itself a great design. But what's even better is the fact that Lego is actually listening to its customers about the treatment of large translucent pieces.
I'd say a multi billion dollar company should have been doing that from the start and no listening to customers should have been necessary in this case.
That same multi billion dollar company is too cheap to give dual molded legs to an exclusive figure in a very expensive set that has a very unsightly and very obvious gap in the print for the boots.
Not impressed.
Lego has issues with color matching between different pieces, print alignment, print clarity and print opacity as well.
Not a premium product for the asking price by a long shot.
Lego needs to do better.
That wheel flip took me from "This is neat" to "I need this today."
I removed the sloped tiles on the door windows and replaced them with an 8x1 gray flat plate, it made the model look so much better!
I think they should have included train wheels and maybe a rail to cover all the 4 models of BTTF! The 3rd movie is my personal favorite and of course the last version of the Delorean!
Man this set is absolutely beautiful. Very much considering getting it and I'm not even that much of a Back to the Future fan
Same and the Ghostbusters car too!
It's awesome to build. I'm on bag 8 . Such a beautiful kit . Should be in any LEGO fan/collectors collection 🔥🔥🔥 Had to get 2 🤠
@@Rc-ho4sv that's where I am too, just finished bag 8!
@@rogerhalt3991 both are so worth the $$$ .
I’m considering getting one to convert it to a standard DeLorean. I don’t see it being all that difficult. You basically just have to take some stuff off and make the back windscreen.
I added two 1x1 plates with clips to the underside of the roof to keep the doors propped open. Quick and unobtrusive fix. 👍 As always, great review Jang!
Price to piece, this is about as reasonably priced as this set can be. Star Wars sets are sold at premiums which are just egregious. while the volume might not be there, you do have a pretty stunning representation of the movie vehicle, almost as good as a UCS set
I’d be cool if they released a minifig scale one again, sort of like how they did for the Tumbler
what _might’ve_ justified the price for me would’ve been including minifigs from EACH movie, maybe more… cowboy Marty and Doc would’ve been amazing, and a “Clint Eastwood” Marty would’ve been even better!
Despite some of the quirks/flaws I think it's a pretty good value for the price. Really like how effective the hover conversion is. Side note/still missing the iron wheels for the rail conversion at the end of the third film though I doubt that would've been anyone's favorite variation. Still would have been cool to see.
So happy to see LEGO are fixing that scratched window piece issue.
It's good they are doing the bare minimum.
It should have been something they would take into consideration when packaging without having to be told.
They have been in business for decades.
This should never have been an issue in the first place.
It should have been their responsibility from the very beginning to make sure and package their product in such a way that it has at least a reasonable chance to arrive to the end customer undamaged.
I want to start off my saying that you are by far my favorite channel when it comes to analyzing and exploring Lego sets. You approach every set and theme with such patience and thoughtfulness. Thanks for continuing to be a true fan of an amazing hobby. “That Being Said..” lol, when the topic of value came around, and you compared this set to “modular building money”, it got me thinking. Because many of the advanced creator expert vehicles (Ecto 1, VW Camper, etc) are not as impressive in comparison to a modular when it comes to sheer size. However, I think some of that extra cost has to go into the extra design process it takes to create those vehicles. The Modulars are, for the most part, working from the same template for each release. Yes the interior details can be creative, but they are built in pretty much the same form. For this set, the designers needed to start from scratch, and create an advanced model that is pretty spot on with some really cool features. I’m only speculating, but I would guess that that process takes a lot more time and resources to complete then a modular set. My thought is Lego includes that extra cost in the price. I do agree that they know collectors and fans will pay it, but it may be something to consider.
Jang is the best Lego reviewer out there!
Wow! What an iconic car! I would love to get it as well, it's not perfect, but so close to it, I guess the only thing missing would be the rail wheels we saw at the end of Back to the Future part 3 when the DeLorean was being pushed by the locomotive, but that's a small detail, thanks very much for the review, Jang!
I am staring at that minifig leg print dumbfounded.
For that price you better give it actual dual molded legs to hide that gap in the print. Then it would at least look ok.
I am happy about the new slope and the new windscreen, but it's still probably not worth the money for me.
This car is just absurdly good.
I ususaly like some studs in my lego but in this case, they're supper consistent with these clean surfaces that also fit very well and don't leave to many gaps in the design.
the moment you turn the wheels into the hovercraft things with the red bar, after building it, is so satisfying!
Even though I absolutely love this set I do have a couple complaints as a huge Back to the Future fan who's not really concerned about some random colors showing through. As a person who is more concerned about the service done to the source material, I think that covering all bases is what this set really neeeded. Adding some rail wheels and some extra memorabilia would have been amazing. Maybe this is a bit of a strech but having different outfits for the minifigs (to go with every movie) would have been the cherry on top.
I like that DMC delorean
The only thing that bothers me is that they didn’t feature the sports almanac in the set
Adding a pair of 1x2-2x2 Up Brackets will lock the doors open for display. Swapping the #2780 pins in the hinges for old-type #4459 pins will also provide enough friction to stop the doors from falling closed.
I feel like the problem with the side windows isn't the shoulders as much as the 1x4 tile that makes up the roofline. The roof seems too thick because of it, though I don't know how you could get around that with the way the A-pillars attach.
I got the set this morning, thats exactly what I figured from seeing the first official images. It would be pretty tricky to figure out a slimmer piece to represent that roof line though :/
Swapping the wedges out really did help a lot on my model
agreed
I wonder if swapping it for a 1x4 black tile might work. Imo the wedges on the bottom need to be there because it lines up with the hood
This was such a fun set to build, I was watching all 3 movies as I put it together! My doors do the same, and I agree that the back metallic piece could have been done better.
Great review Jang! I was fortunate to get one on release day and I couldn’t be happier with the build and the end result.
Personally, I had no misgivings about the price; compared to what little amount of Star Wars or Marvel stuff you could get for the same cost, or compared to the much more expensive Lego Globe, I felt the price tag was just right.
I think Lego has completely made up for their abysmal first attempt in 2013. 👍
"Those are Bohrok eyes, old pieces" hit me in the gut in a weird way
Finally got this one, my sister bought me it and its super cool! Watched the first and second movie while building and it was a great building experience. I did feel some repetitive steps but thats to expect with a car. The door's for me stand perfectly by themselves. Love all the features and is a must have for a fan.
I feel like a lot of pieces were used to implement the hover conversion play feature, when this is a creator expert set meant for display. I would have preferred a simple manual flip-down feature for each individual wheel much like the Cuusoo/Ideas set. This would potentially allow steering to be implemented as well. Also, all the control panels, license plates, flux capacitor warning should be prints. I appreciate the minifigs and the protector for the windshield, but I also expect such things from a premium product.
Exactly, for me all these premium adult sets should be done with prints. Stickers don’t last and if you misplace one its wrong for ever.
Great model. Great video. Great Scott!
I love this and will definitely be looking out for it at some point! Shame they didn't add a build for the mighty Peugeot-Renault-Volvo engine!!
Been waiting for this video! Absolutely love mine just finished building it
This I’ve been waiting for since 30 mins after announcement
I went I to a Lego store and it was out of stock
Gotta be ready at 12am online at lego on the release date ..
find out when your lego store gets shipments (mine is tues/thurs) and call to ask them to put one on hold early on that day.
I'm a huge BTTF fan, I remember building my own delorean time machine with legos when I was a kid. I missed the first one (but honestly, the hood was not good looking, and I had issues with the fact that there was no windscreen, so no biggie. I was still pissed), and I gladly payed a little bit extra compared to the Porsche and the Mustang for that set.
I guess, like the SW stuff back in the day, you have the "licensed movie stuff" tax to get this one
Great Scott! Set looks beautiful. Price imho is ok..ish. Yes comparing to the volume of stuff (love that phrase, it covers it all), it is a bit much, but not way to much. It is just what you said earlier in the video: too many new collector buildings, which makes it hard to keep up. I am less willing to pay a 170 now, because there are loads of other set with a simular price tag I also want. So I have to make choices. And luckily that is a luxury problem. For many people it simply is way to much.
Looks amazing Jang!
I can’t say for sure without holding it, but the model looks very sturdy and filled in. I’d much rather have that then a larger set that is mostly hollow space. The light brick is a nice detail as well. This is one set I’d like to trick out with more LEDs on the dashboard.
Marty’s face is the only thing that bothers me. I think taking the face from the CMF Spider-Man and using a slightly darker hair piece would have made it better. I’m slightly disappointed that we didn’t get the rainbow hat though…
Sorry Lego, but there should be 0 excuse for the interior not looking as good as it could. Between the gigantic steering wheel, extra colors, and lack of detail, they could have easily put in a little bit more care for no extra cost.
Still gonna buy it, but I'm going to have to do some modifications to the inside just to make it cleaner.
probably my favorite set in a long time. loved building it and it looks sooooooooo good displayed on my shelf
Alright, call me a crazy theorist if you want, but I don’t think this will be the last Back to the Future set we’ll get.
Think about it: in the original set from years ago, we got minifigs of the 1985 Doc and Marty that were from the first movie. Now with this set we’ve gotten the 2015 versions of them from the second movie. Do you see a pattern?
So, it stands to reason that, perhaps not now or any time soon, we’ll get a set that has the 1885 versions from the third movie. As to what this set might be, I have an idea for that as well. Naturally the cowboy versions would seem out of place with anything from the first or second films so it would have to be based on the third.
So answer me this: What would you say is the most notable/memorable part of the third film? The answer is obvious.
The train.
If Lego does do this, I can see three possibilities.
A. They make the time train from the end of the film.
B. They make it a play set of the scene with the 131 locomotive pushing the delorean. Naturally they would have to add Clara if they did this version.
Or my personal favorite, C. Do both. Make it a set of the train but also include the parts to switch it between the 131 locomotive or the time train like how the last two sets with the delorean have been. But of course this version wouldn’t just have Doc and Marty, but also Clara, Jules, Vern, Einstein, and maybe Jennifer.
It would be perfect! The ultimate Back to the future set!
I want a Bufford / Biff Tannen set to go along with this! 3 minifigs (1885, 1955, and 2015), a sports almanach, a horse, and a 1946 Ford Coupe would do! Oh... and some manure.
I cashed in a lot of VIP points and got this for half price, definitely made it easier to swallow. It’s a good model as-is but there is significant room for improvement.
Lego should considering making and using lego magnet bricks. That could have been an excellent way to keep doors open.
I had a blast putting this set together! I really recommend getting this set!
Great Scott!
Waiting for mine, as others have said, I wish all the body bricks were all the drum lacquered silver bricks.
bag three with the wheel mechanism I found frustrating. You need to make sure the ‘folded’ wheels are evenly lined up but mine wasn’t initially and the instructions don’t make that clear. Needs something like a close up showing how the gears should mesh to make sure they’re aligned. And that bag had lots of insecure pieces not being secured for quite a few steps
I feel like Marty REALLY would have benefitted from dual molded legs here
I actually refused to watch any other review for this set, I was waiting for your review the whole time, to get the best possible look at this set from the best Lego youtuber!
Lol I’ve only seen back to the future twice but I really liked the movie, when I saw the set come out I was like boom yeah I’ll get that definitely and when you just said $170 think about that that’s modular building price I’m like holy crap he’s right I was totally ready to spend like $160 on sale or something but you’re right you can get a modular building for that, I think I’m still going to get it it’s too cool I think I like the DeLorean more than I like the time machine aspect of it
You could try putting a 4 long bar piece through the center of the pins that act as the door hinge. It might ever so slightly increase the pin diameter and thus the friction.
This set needs an overhaul I’ve already ordered additional pieces to improve on legos design
It almost looks as Marty was originally going to have dual molded legs and they cut it from the budget last minute.
I held off watching this review till I built it so I don’t see any spoilers! Now I have and it was an joy to build being an LEGO and Back to the Future fan! Impressed how they packed the window piece, unfortunately my DMC print at the front was a little smudged. The hardest part is which version to display it!
So, in another youtuber's video an interesting thing was pointed out - The T2 camper van from late last year is actually in the same color scheme as the T2 from the chase scene in the Twin Pines parking lot from the first movie! It just needs the spare tire removed and fog lights added to the bumper and it would be a match!
My only issue with this is in the instructions it only has an image of the number bag being dumped out. I preferred when instructions showed what the set would look like after each bag.
I totally agree with you. $170 is not justified for what Lego is offering in this set. I've had enough of companies milking my wallet for nostalgia.
Why is Marty wearing a life preserver?
I picked up one yesterday! Looking at the Diamond version of the Delorean, the window height in the Lego set seems accurate. As for the price, that's typical for a Lego set. I believe even the Millennium Falcon is close to $200 now.
Very nice the only thing i can think of missing is Marty's funky hat, but that might be too much i guess.
I think it's a shame that TLG didn't put any detail on the underside of the DeLorean so that it looks better when hover-converted; Also I think TLG could have made a flame trail sub-build, but it's likely something that MOC Builders can easily do (along with blue light-piping). All-in-all I think the set is better than the Afterlife Ecto 1 set though, and I hope it inspires someone to create an ideas set of the BTTF3 Train.
Oooh, definitely looking forward to building this one! (Digitally unfortunately, I can’t afford the actual model :(
Save if possible. Well worth the $$$ awesome kit .
Considering they are supposed to be changing to paper bags yet they wrap a windscreen with another bit of plastic. lol.
So happy they packed the windshield differently than they have in the past.
I love all the complaints on the price, just for it to go up all the way to $200 right after it came out. The pricing is beginning to get completely unjustified. Lego is now the most profitable toy company on the planet. There's no reason for them to be raising prices.
I give the GB ECTO-1 a solid 9/10 for building experience, play features, and collectibility/detail. This new Time machine looks like it might get a 7/10 for overall design and construction given the issues we see and the fact that they rely on too many stickers. The Marty and doc mini figs as well as the three separate conversions do help sell it which can bump it to an 8/10 but if it was just the single variant without the mini figs that drops it.
Jang, great review as ever. Regarding value I'd be interested to hear your thoughts compared with say the Batwing (no functions, more parts, licenced) or the T2 camper van (functions, licence) as the price sits between the 2.
I have this set but I still love to watch the reviews
I think it’s worth the price with all the figures and the design of the over all car
I'm sure that I've built a set in the past few years or so that had spring-loaded gull-wing doors, so I don't know why Lego didn't do that in this set. The Technic 24hr racecar also had gull wing doors that could be opened by operating a gear, so that could have been another possibility.
I think a 4l bar pushed into the pin connectors will make the doors stay up/open!
That is if lego used 2x 2l pins!
I’ve noticed Lego instructions have been going downhill. Just weird angles were you can’t see exactly where to place parts. Coloring of
Pieces were it’s not 100% clear which color
To use. I messed up a couple times on this build. And that’s rare.
Also wanted to add my hood is not starting together or straight as I’d like.
Train wheels and track section would be neat for me to MOC.
Hello McFly, anybody home????
Since the minifigures are from the second movie, I’ll build the time machine from the second movie.
I wish that the wheels would have also slid out slightly as well as angling 90°. That is how it happened in the movie and also how it happens on a die-cast model of the car that I own.
They really need to make different colours of light bricks.
My dad would love this set
Not sure if it’s exclusive to him but Lego does have a much younger looking, more Michael J Fox resembling faceprint that they used for the Cuuso and Dimensions Marty.
The large piece in the middle of the hood looked bad in photos on Brickset because of color variation. Hopefully that was either the camera exaggerating the differences or an uncommon production issue. It looked great in your video.
I like that yellow EOD Spartan
Nice looking set from the outside. But for the asking price, it really shouldn't have those flaws. Also I feel like for the price they could've easily included 4 extra tires and and an extra hose, that the conversions really are standalone and you don't have to disassemble stuff as much. Might still pick it up when it goes on sale for $100-120
The model looks great, but too big and expensive for me. Now, a $40 one like the tumbler would be awesome.
25 more than the Porsche 911 seems like a pretty good price imo. Especially for big fans of the films
It's been two months already and it's still out of stock over here haha, they even ran out of space for all the emails that people put in for be notified of it. Definitely a best seller, hope Lego makes more sets for back to the future!
I got lucky to use vip points to knock the price down to £135, I had £5 on card which they took off & this set brought it up to £10 again so they took that off as well
Looks great but missing the Christmas tree panel behind the drivers seat and i guess there are no train wheels in this size from Lego
I think the only thing that bothers me just a bit - and I haven't seen anyone else comment on - is that the back wheels should be larger than the front. Seems like it would have been very easy for them to add that...
Jang is so cool
This makes me want to built a 80s Technic style DeLorean, with that hover function x3
Great review, as always. Thanks! That gap between the silver smooth plates at the rear sides bugs me and I feel the doors are too flat in their face. I'd hoped for some sloping, as on the real DeLorean. Overall a good set but overpriced
i am a big lego fan but playmobil's DeLorean is alot better than this
Well, for a hundred bucks less you can get the beautiful one that Playmobil did.
Wish there was an alternate build of DeLorean without the b2tf add ons.
I never look closely enough to notice scuffs on trans pieces but for those who do care, that's a good leap forward.
Would have liked to have bought this but the scalpers got to it first. Had to make do with a digital download of the latest Lego Star Wars. PS4 version of course because no PS5 thanks again to the scalpers.
Nice model !
That set looks great. My favorite is Back to the Future II, and I LOVE that hover transformation, so that is definitely how I would have it displayed most of the time. Too bad it's not all drum lacquered and the stickers aren't all prints! :P
But for $170, maybe it should?! Holy moley! I don't know you if you still have the Ecto-1, but I have seen the two placed beside each other on a video or picture, and they seem pretty appropriately scaled. The Ecto-1 dwarfs the Time Machine. But not in price!
This should cost way less than 170, given the Ecto-1 is 200 and is so much larger. Did LEGO figure Back to the Future fans are more wealthy and fanatical than Ghostbusters fans? Either way, I doubt I will be able to fit this set into my budget, even as much as I like it.
It's funny really the original smaller 2013 21103 costs about 300 hundred dollars new
and this costs about 200 dollars less lol.
The most sad point is front axle - wheels cannot turn
Amazing review but now we want the train. . .
