Raised Beds - Design and Build - Hugelculture Style and VERY low cost ($5 per bed!!!)

    These beds happen to be 4'x8' but of course could be any dimension people wanted. We make them 4' wide because our 1/2" EMT conduit pipes bent in an arch will fit over them to turn them into mini low-tunnels if needed.
    The wood is sourced from a local saw mill. Wherever you live you may find a saw mill that has offcuts, slabcuts, slabwood, live edge, wastewood.. ..Many names for a similar product. Often very very low cost or even free, these boards make for amazing raised bed building. The staves I made are from Black Locust which is ideal, but any wood would last at least a few years.
    Filling these beds can be done in large part with old, rotten wood.... Abandoned firewood piles, big chunks from wood chipping, branches, etc., etc., leaves are nice too... Cleaning up old garden debris, raking off a lawn, collecting dropped branches in the woods, SO many sources of filling material. We then cover with soil, in our case leftovers from a pond dig, but maybe you have a ditch you want to dig nearby or a micro pond? You can get your soil for most of the fill from there! We will cap our beds in the last 2-4" with finished compost from our chicken system, which is made entirely from waste materials. Really works wonders!
    Save that money and resource :)
    We will share update video soon with how we mulch the walk ways and how we cap and finalize the soil on the beds.

    I send a lot of people to your videos because you do things without having to spend a lot of money because people think you have to go to the big box stores ace hardware stuff like that to get everything you don’t you got a resource was near you and who’s got it for free and you’re really good at that.

      Thanks, yeah, it feels very very important to have videos centered on no or very low cost solutions, ideally based on waste streams so folks can approach this lifestyle without a financial burden.

      Super kind words, thank you Timothy. I don't forsee any fundamental changes to what you see on this channel. There is no desire to get to a certain level with things so we can finally just buy new stuff! The point and focus of our lives is to live like this and share it, so it will be how we move forward, I think you can trust that...

    You are an inspiration to all of us frugal people. I made my pea trellis from that wretched Virginia creeper. I ripped the vines off the fence & wound/wove them into circles/ovals. Then left them to bake on the concrete driveway. When it came time to "crochet" it all together, I used green vines. This is it's 2nd Michigan winter.

    I love this! Using only material that will decompose makes it great, I can't wait to see how the area shapes up, it already looks awesome.
    I remember watching a video when you made those beds for your mum.
    This is looking very productive already and I really like how the wilderness in the garden is tamed a bit by these beds but not much - this is going to be a great area to spend time in. I look forward to seeing what will be planted here, probably not pineapples, but lots of other delicious plants.🤗

    Pineappleish...love it! This gives me inspiration for the raised beds I'll be putting in soon. I inherited about 70 sheets of old corn crib siding...I know it's not wood, which I would prefer, but it was free, recycled and will be reused. My beds will be 4x9 and 27" tall...I really like the idea of using staves...maybe this technique will work with the siding. 🤔 All trial and error on my part! Lol

    As of late, I have switched to making raised & semi raised beds out of whatever scrap fencing-like material I can find & pounding wood staves or pre-cut rebar I've had for years to hold them upright. Old cyclone (cut down) fence, cattle panel, concrete mesh works fine. If it looks really hideous, I grow & train beans/peas around the outside. After hearing you huff & puff after moving all that locust, I remember why I switched from wood. Locust really is wonderful, even the off-cut scabs.
    Because I use "

      It is a heavy material to move around to be sure, but they will hold soil for decades, and once these areas a very well established and defined in a few years we can move the whole lot of wood to another area and start again!

Fallen logs also become birdhouses for the finches and blue birds

  • @earlshine453
    @earlshine453 Рік тому +4

    My mantra nowadays is: If you fill a raised bed with more than 6 inches of organic material, you will need more than 1 inch of compost every year to keep the bed at the same level. And if you planted perennials or trees in those beds, you may encounter some problems.

    • @flatsville9343
      @flatsville9343 Рік тому +2

      Yeah. Bed sink is an issue. I try to dig out 10 in of dirt (set aside) & place all the heavy logs & braches in the very bottom packed as tightly as possible. Use the set aside dirt as close to the top (cap) as possible. No perennial shrubs get planted until the bed has "settled" so they don't get "wonky."
      Too many "leaves" in the layer almost assures uneven settling. I use them to "pack" spaces as tightly as possible.

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  Рік тому +2

      Good note... No trees going in, but some perennials in the middle, which we'll bulk out with a LOT more compost before planting. Yes, we'll have to top these off...

    That is so cool!!! I would love to grow some fresh lions mane! Can they grow on pine? Got a lot of pine! I started taking lions mane powder in my morning coffee along with turkey tail to help fight cancer and I'm making some progress, my numbers a slowly recovering from the chemo and I no longer forget why I'm in a particular room! So I'd say it's helpful. It is on the expensive side though so growing my own would help a lot! Thanks for the good info, your helping me fight the good fight!

    You can always keep one end or side of the bed "open" so you can just run the wheelbarrow into the bed & dump. It reduces shoveling (dig & lift) quite a bit.
    Save your back. You will need it when you get old.

    I wonder if you will grow any pineappleish plants this year. If you trim the bottom board of the first bed with a chainsaw, just a hair, the top board will sit more flush. Great use of material!

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  Рік тому +2

      We may grow some pineappleish plants, we'll see...
      Yeah, we may trim a little to get things flush, BUT we may find more value in planting out the cracks with plants like oregano and thyme and let them spill out of the sides... We'll see..

    I get my best results when I pack the hugel as densely as possible when constructing. Takes a bit more care but the beds don't collapse as much.

      Yep, these will certainly break down a LOT over the year or two, but we can always add more compost later to top them off and we'll keep it mainly annual for a while knowing that this will be the case
