If only language was constant, consistent and logical! In English the sound of the letters and meanings of words sometimes have to be established from the context through usage, which then changes in an inconsistent fashion over time and differently around the country and world such that archaic uses of words can be preserved in an established standard figure of speech which would not work in current English if used in a different context.
What a great example of how we use it today!

Matthew 6.10, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven."
Most of the time, when I hear people recite the Lord's Prayer, it's "thy will be done ON earth as it is in heaven," which is how the verse appears in the ESV, NKJV, NASB, NIV, &c. "In earth," sounds like a petition that God's will may be done in your garden.
They quote it with "on" because that's how the Roman Catholics say it. You'll notice they will even say "tresspasses" instead of "debts" as the KJV reads
Mark, You are greatly appreciated from a perspective you may not have yet realized; I came to Jesus in 2017, so not that long ago. When someone , like myself starts the journey of reading His word daily, and just can't get enough; it becomes apparent from those who have been Christians for decades, their opinions on which bible translations to use and not use. As a newer believer you look up to the mature Christian's thoughts on these matters; yet they all seem to differ.
So , that leaves some of us newer believers second guessing ourselves as to whether I am using the right bible, or not.
You bring much clarity and peace of mind to those like myself who can just read God's word and be confident in the translation that we use. I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel; thank you very much.

I agree! Although I do watch the Super Bowl every year, I generally find the halftime shows to be extravagant and unimpressive. From what little I know and have seen of past Super Bowl halftime shows, I think they were way better in the 80s and early 90s. Then one of them (a winter-themed one with ice skating) bombed so badly that many viewers flipped over to In Living Color while it was on, and from then on they began making a point of only having big-name singers and bands do it. Such a shame.

I remember as a kid, having another kid try to explain to me that some Bibles teach that you believe in/on Jesus, but the KJV tells you to believe in/on Jesus. (I can't recall which one went which way.). He said it was of great importance, and that people who had the wrong pronoun weren't getting saved.
Of course as an adult this sounds pretty absurd. As a kid, I didn't know what to think or how to respond. I'll guarantee you one thing--this kid didn't get this idea from his own analysis as an 8-9 yr old. It was told him by an adult.
I remember someone telling me that as a kid. I always loved to read and write, so my little self wracked my brains trying to figure out the difference, reading it over and over with both "in" and "on".

I open my New World Translation bible and compare it with the KJV scripture in discussion. Every single time, with no exception, the NWT is exactly in line with the resulting point you make and sometimes even clearer! (I've watched all of your "false Friends" videos throughout the covid isolation.) At the same time, I did guess (without even checking my Greek) that "in" could have possibly meant "on" back in Elizabethan times. I use your videos (you're not the only one though) to test and compare how the NWT lines up with your conclusions. You have a 100% success rate so far! Keep up the good work!

A friend of mine whose native language is Portuguese used to occasionally confuse in/on, for basically this reason. (For example, the TBS Portuguese Bible uses the equivalent of "in" here, but "on" wouldn't be wrong as a translation either. The same is true of the NBLA, a _modern_ Spanish translation; it literally says "in the forehead".
I heard someone who shall not be named gave that very thing as a reason for his sticking with the KJV-that we’re all going to take the mark because we’re looking for something to go on our hands when it will really go in our hands. No. Taking the Mark will not be accidental. Revelation tells us that an Angel flies through the air warning people what will happen to them if they take the Mark. There won't be any confusion.
Strangely, the KJV translators chose to use 'UPON their foreheads' in Revelation 20:4.
Matthew 21:8 is also an amusing and archaic way of saying 'placed them on the road' - KJV says "strawed them in the way".
Equate this to can't see the forest for the trees. So many times having such a narrow view on what a verse says is usually due to supporting a specific doctrine or idea. The danger is that one can lose sight of the big picture which is where we spend eternity by being overly focused on differences in belief rather than on the harm that can come saying my interpretation is the only correct one. Your constant focus on clarity without being judgemental is a rare and refreshing attitude that I find worthwhile. Please continue in this.

Everything in the book gives time-statements and context of it being something that the audience of these letters, which were 7 real life churches in the first century were to be on the lookout for. Nothing it in gives the impression it would occur 2000+ years later.
When I first saw the verse in English on the screen, I identified the English word, but was supposing the underlying Greek was “en.” Turns out it is “epi,” which is of course “on” or “upon.” It’s part of our word epidermis, which is the uppermost layer of skin.
You didn't do enough to rule out the other option that comes to mind: advanced revelation. Who's to say that language change itself is not revealing the true meaning of the KJV to us now, a meaning that was unconsciously placed in (not on) the text by the Anglican prophets of old? After all, if I've learned anything from decades of pre-trib rapture media, it's that my generation is especially important in the history of Christianity. It's only right that we feel entitled to hidden knowledge within the book of Revelation now that we're in Scofield's "self-satisfied" Laodicean Age, right?

This is a false friend that misinformed me as to what the archaic word "charger" is contextually...
In my mind, a charger was always a covered platter like you would use to keep food warm. I assumed it had to be covered because John's head was IN the charger.

Eric, charger is not archaic, it is current, though you may not have experienced use of the word. In fine dining it is common. Royalty, in the context you referenced, would have had chargers in the kitchen and dining room.

Mark, I loved this message. At the 10:00 mark there is a clear example of "in" vs. "on" in your own commentary which made me chuckle a bit. "They are abundantly and clearly wrong 'IN' this matter", could have easily been said "ON this matter". There is such a stronghold in the mind of KJV-onlyism-ists that defies a logical acknowledgment of the transition of language over time. Might the solution (in this case) be to avoid the mark no matter how it is to be applied? Simply refuse it regardless of whether if is to be on or in the hand or forehead, or even near or behind, etc. Have nothing to do with it.

Some parts of the Church of England still use the (really old) traditional version of the Lord's Prayer that says, "... thy will be done IN earth...". [I have heard it this year, possibly at the coronation of King Charles III.] You need to be wilfully obtuse to misunderstand that 'in' there means 'on' in modern English.
That's how I feel, too, but I've come to realize that not many wise, not many noble are called-that a lot of people do misunderstand things I think are obvious. We'll never be able to produce a translation that eliminates that possibility, but we can produce translations that make archaisms less likely to be the cause of those misunderstandings. Also: in some contexts, like "thy will be done in earth," the contemporary meaning of "in" makes so little sense that (most?) people are shunted into the right view. But in the story in this video, that wasn't true for Rev 16:13-for at least some Christians. There were enough of these folks that they created a misunderstanding about microchips to go with their misunderstanding.
I've heard the beast was likely Emperor Nero & John the Revelator's fear was that Nero would come back (either from hiding or come back from the dead) & issue a coin with his face on it. In English we speak of someone holding a coin 'in' one's hand when buying & selling goods. I can't recall if in was used that way in Elizabethan English. Also, I'm unsure sure what mark upon one's forehead would be.
A mark on the forehead is symbolic, signaling association with someone. Compare Revelation 7.2-4 and Deuteronomy 6.6-8 (quoted here from the NCPB KJV):
And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, ‘Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads’. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed a hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. (Rev. 7.2-4)
And these words which I command thee this day, shall be in thy heart. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. I grew up in a church that due to misunderstanding of this text would teach that the mark was in your hand. The irony of this misinterpreted passage meant vaccines were prohibited because we might unknowingly take the mark and be lost eternally. Not understanding language change can result is some rather whacky misinterpretations. Thank you so much for your work.

7) The Bible says God's seal will only be in/on the forehead but the beast's mark will be in/on the right hand and forehead, what's the significance?
8)The Bible says those with the mark worships the beast, is it then safe to say that there's an entity that is seeking world dominance to be worshipped over the Almighty?

Personally I feel that unless you’ve studied Elizabethan English in University the KJV is not the best translation for a modern speaker, I’ve used the NKJV and NASB95 as my personal translations. While I have studied Koine Greek in Seminary I don’t know it that well anyways, I’m also trying out the ESV now since it has modern and updated scholarship. I appreciate your videos 👍

I really like the ESV for general reading and the NASB95 for more in depth study, but I suppose both would work either way, it's just that the ESV kinda flows better, aka more "readable"
I also like the CSB, and even the NIV is better than the KJV

@QuietlyContemplating I wasn’t raised in a Christian home. I majored in Philosophy in college. When I was 26, someone handed me a King James Bible. I took it home and listened to Alexander Scourby read the book of John while I followed along in the Bible. I remember going to my wife afterwards and telling her “I just read the words of Jesus for the first time.” She replied “and?” And I said “these are not the words of some mere man.” Three years later I got saved when I was 29 and a married father of two when a fundamental Baptist preached the gospel to me. Now I’m a father of 5 and my wife and children are saved, my parents got saved, my brother and two sisters got saved. And we have the King James Bible to thank for that. The very words of God.

However... considering that the historical stance on the Mark of the Beast has been such that the mark is not a literal, physical mark, but instead an indicator of thinking or doing (for example, living like the world, thus the "six-hundred sixty-six" as being the number of fallen humanity; or, in the case of the number-letter equivalence doctrinal position, that 666--or 616, as found in some texts--is a reference to the name of Nero, which would mean treating Nero as above Jesus), the use of "in" may be actually MORE applicable than "on"

Spanish “en” is translated “in” or “on” depending on the context. I’m not surprised the English “in” once was used the same way. Many of my Hispanic friends who grew up speaking Spanish have a hard time remembering which word to use.

Surely part of the complication here is that Revelation is given in symbols? So where a person might be relying on on translation for their theology and feel they need “in” or “on”, when in fact the symbolic nature of it would actually give some wiggle room either way in the use of those words?

Contextually, Revelation 14:1 would provide a good answer to those trying to use 13:16 to argue for microchips (and it uses the same Greek proposition, translated archaically in the KJV. "And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him can hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads."
My KJV only brothers are throwing Micah 5:2 at me. In the KJV: “…whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” ESV: …”whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”
They claim the modern translation diminishes the deity of Christ by implying that he was created. Can you help with this one?
Micah 5.2 is saying that the ruler will come from an ancient bloodline (i.e. David's lineage). While it has been treated as a reference to Christ's deity by some interpreters, it is _not_ used this way when Matthew quotes it (2.6). At worst, the ESV is choosing not to push that interpretation as the only acceptable one.
By contrast, consider how the KJV handles Galatians 4.3-5: "Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons."
Was Jesus "made," as the KJV says, or was he "born," as the ESV says?

There are several verses that either tell us to believe in, or believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Obviously, we do both, but in the Greek, it seems like it was the same word.
This conversation came when a friend where talking about the same thing. The issue was the mark being on the person the person.

@@QuietlyContemplatingSod also refers to soil or grass. To turn a sod is what a farmer would do when digging a new vegetable bed in a field, for example. It is less used now, but is still current. I do wonder if the cuss phrase "oh sod it" comes from older English meaning to get rid of something unwanted/no longer useful by casting it down to the ground or even burying it in the soil. Over the centuries there are a few words.and phrases which are now considered impolite which have a perfectly innocent origin. Chaucer wrote some pretty saucy stuff!

I gave up on the KJV forty years ago just for the reason you say. It is a beautiful translation, but some passages can be difficult to understand because of the changes in English. I do like the NKJV, but it is not my primary translation. My understanding moves along faster with several of the newer ones. And, as I understand it, modern translators have access to some better ancient copies than were available to the KJV translators. The MOST important thing, however, is that you read any translation with prayer.

In 1969 John Denver wrote a song “Leaving On A Jet Plane.” If I recall correctly it was first recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. Was John (who was also a pilot) suggesting he could fly ON a jet plane rather than IN a jet plane? No, the word “on” can be short for “on board” or a substitute for “in” when it sounds better to the ear or is easier to say with the mouth. Keep in mind, the Bible was written to be read out loud and heard as nobody has a copy of their own Bible until they became available and affordable by the common person.
I think I take a different lesson from examples like this than most of my commenters seem to. Here's the lesson: idiomatic use of presuppositions is a fickle and changing thing which doesn't always contain lots of rhyme or reason. English could change so that no one ever says "I'm on a plane" but instead "I'm in a plane." Likewise, English once allowed "a mark in the hand" to mean (what we would say as) "a mark on the hand."
@@markwardonwords You left out "I'm leaving...". Listen to the song, then try singing "I'm leaving IN a jet plane..." Notice how your mouth is staying relatively closed with "leaving in". Now sing "I'm leaving ON a jet plane..." Your mouth is forced open more you so that "leavin'" (the "g" in "leaving" is soft when sung) is distinguished from "in." This probably isn't the case with Revelation 13:16 but if you read a Hebrew and Greek text out loud (as it was intended to be read) you can hear the word choices being made with the ear. This is especially true with paronomasia when words need to sound alike in order to make the words play off each other. But now I am WAY off on a tangent.... but that's what I seem to do a lot in my old age. By the way, when I was a wee lad I was told the Mark of the Beast was a bar code (1970's) then it became a microchip in the 1980's.... but I've become convinced it is a reference to Cesar Nero which is SUCH a relief as I wouldn't want have to scan my forehead at the grocery store.
I listen to kjv preachers to understand how they understand and preach and teach the words in kjv. You will learn a lot.
What I've learned from KJV preachers is that they can't understand Jacobean English as well as they assume they can.
Mark, I know you don't want to overwhelm listeners with technicalities, but it would be great if in your videos you could share the Greek you are focusing on, especially if it's a short amount of text like here (one word). It's both helpful for Greek readers and lends more authenticity to your presentation, I feel.

New King James says "on" which is still KJV but updated to reflect modern word meaning - this seems to confirm your explanation that "in" was correct in the original KJV because it included the meaning 'on'. Also, Young's Literal Translation says "upon" and it purports to be literal, for example it translates doulos (Greek) as 'slave' whereas most translations incorrectly translate it as 'servant or bond servant'. Other more literal translations say "on" (HCSB, LSB and LEB). So it seems 'in" was in back in 1611 but is now out and that "on" or "upon" is correct for the latest version of the English language we use now. Good video.

The point is that the Mark is a sign of allegiance to the Beast, and thereby a sign that the receiver’s name is not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

I am just a layman no formal education so no authority for anyone to take anything I say with any seriousness but the first thing that comes to my mind right off the bat is a tattoo. A tattoo is BOTH on and in at the same time. The ink shows up on the flesh but stays for the remainder of a persons life because it is also IN the flesh. It is IN the Dermis AND on the Dermis so a person could say that a tattoo is on the hand Or a person could say the tattoo is IN the hand (I know that sounds weird) but would technically be correct or so seems to me.

@@markwardonwords I kind of think it may be some kind of tattoo or maybe where a person is branded like livestock (that too would be both on and in) I kind of wonder if it is not a play on words like when Abraham was going to sacrifice his son and he said "God shall provide Himself a lamb" being God would provide His own lamb but also could be read that God shall provide HIMSELF (as) a the lamb with a play on words. I do believe I kind of lean towards the mark being more of a branding then a tattoo thou because of vs. in the Bible where it talks about "searing" your conscience as with a hot iron etc... Since the mark of the beast seals them it seems to go along with the searing of the conscience.
From what I understand. The mark is a pledge of allegiance to a leader who sets himself up as 'god' in the 3rd temple.
If you look at radical Islamic warriors, they were a head band and wrist band with script on it pledging their allegiance to allah.
Islam seems to be who people will follow after the church is removed from this world and the 7 year tribulation starts. Whether a chip is incorporated into this allegiance is speculation on my part, but that's my 2 cents worth.
