I've been wanting to move to San Diego for years. I live in OC California. My wife and I came to the realization that the time to buy would've been 15-20 years ago, in our twenties. We accepted this realization a few years ago that we can never afford to live in San Diego.
Plus, we used to go down there all the time and get a hotel room. Today, hotel rooms are SOOOOOOO expensive there that we just go down for the day now and spend the night maybe once or twice a year.
Eventually, I don't see how San Diego will have minimum wage workers as they wouldn't be able to survive on what they make.
That said, I have been all over the world. I have lived in in Europe for awhile, been to Canada, Mexico, all over this country and I still believe that San Diego is the most beautiful city I have ever been to. That's why my wife and I got married there on Coronado Beach. If you've never been to San Diego then you just don't know until you spend some time there. The people are amazing, the food is delicious and the scenery can't be beat.
There is nothing like a San Diego sunset on a warm summer evening.

Jay. You will have to make a minimum of 300k to live comfortably to own a home in SD and pay your expenses. It’s not americas finest city. It lacks public transportation, not walkable, the most expensive utilities in CA, one major sport team and many other things that lack what a finest city” would have.. it’s nice but most average people, like yourself, are priced out. Struggling with sunshine is not fun or healthy. You never gave a monthly total cost btw.
Figure home/car/gas/food/utilities/insurance/spending/phone/internet/misc 10-12 k net to live. Not included the 160-200k down payment. So min gross pay would have to be 200k to net 129k. That is living without saving any money.

From multiple friend's experience, one person not sharing with a roommate, and wanting/needing to live in the safer parts of town, renting a 2 bedroom apartment (1 bedrooms had a 1 to 3 month wait when thry needed to move and most apartments force tenants into a 1 year lease), and they even eat all meals at home, have high gas efficiency vehicles, and still generally spend about $7,500 a month on all bills. These people are extremely frugal to the point of finding internet for $34 a month, no streaming services, rarely using either heat or air conditioning. They would have to spend at least $3000 month more to be able to buy the smallest $4-600,000 range condo homes. And that is in addition to the typical expectation of $100,000 down payment I'm seeing when I look at property in that city. Granted that probably allows for a little bit of cushion (a few thousand in savings over the year), yet that is needed to avoid ending up homeless

Bro. Please never stop. I can't afford where I live now, and probably can never move there. You're the only one keeping me sane between visits.

I was priced out of San Diego last year and now my mom who lives in senior church housing right above Civita was just sold and guess what she will be priced out in two years, they have already warned them. So what will happen to all those seniors living on a fixed budget…🥾🥾🥾its really sad. Civita and other places like has literally killed San Diego! Good job. All that door a dance floor closest!

As a San Diegan that pulls in more than twice the average yearly wage, I will say this. If you can't afford to pay for a million-dollar home, fuel and electricity prices that are twice what the rest of the country pays, all service and maintenance (Doctors, Therapists, Child care, Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC, Cable...), prices being at least 25% higher......and the list goes on. You can't afford San Diego. You think you can until your car has mechanical issues and your child needs to see a doctor in the same month and it drains your account. You will realize you are in over your head.

Ive been to San Diego several times for business. I was struck by the disparity. San Diego are the surrounding area is some of the most expensive real estate in the US. Just across the border in TJ , you'll see plywood shacks build on the hillside. Theres no place like the USA.

Pretty much if your family was lucky enough to buy in the 90’s when it was cheap your good, for the rest you need to be making bank to live in SD

Yes, it was still affordable in the 90's when I bought my house. I couldn't afford it now. It's a great area to live in but the lack of affordability of housing is a huge problem.

That is in the current market, with current interest rates. This is not a buyers market. Waiting for better rates after things calm down will save you several hundred dollars a month

Thank you for breaking down the cost as a single person! I live in Seattle and prices are comparable and many people here live at home too. Save where you can!! I'm out on my own tho so it can be hard to learn about what others are doing solo. Be easy!!
