Quite how the BBC 'allowed' this performance at the time I'm not quite sure, but its a masterpiece in non promotion. Arguably the most inadvertently subversive performance the show ever aired.
@@simonsmith4015 There was a technical issue for All About Eve. Julianne & Tim couldn't hear the track for the first 70 seconds (neither could the audience).
Did someone else see this on the TOTP re-runs by any chance?? I was a vague fan back in the day as I did buy the 'Follow the Leader' single, not sure why or where I got it from as I'd never heard it played anywhere and of course remember Love like Blood on TOTP. After seeing this footage again I've rediscovered them and wondered how on earth I missed all their other tunes when I was a massive punk/post-punk fan at that time! To date I'm in the process of snapping up any album I can get hold of and play nothing else, wish I could go back to those '79 ,'80's - plus years, simply love the tribal drumming on the early tracks and beyond, have to be played loud! Thanks to BBC4 for rekindling the interest!! :)
You must have been into the cult and earlier versions, theatre of hate , play dead , sisters of mercy etc etc Like I was. Great times down Manchester clubs.
Thanks for the video, it's been 41 years since I saw this as a kid & it still remains one of the best TOTP performances, up there with PiL, The Exploited, KLF/Extreme Noise Terror & The Orb doing Blue Room. Speaking of the latter, some say it is Alex Patterson in the NBC suit.
I remember watching this at the time and being surprised that the drummer was singing. I think this may have been one of the many times Jazz Colman threw his toys out of the pram and buggered off temporarily…although on this occasion, I think he legged it to Iceland in fear of a third world war. Eeez a funny bugger that un!
Cannot fault Big Paul miming but Jaz, you should be ashamed from walking out on the band you and Paul created even though Iceland seemed so inviting at the time!
I wondered where Jaz was. So this was the period when he buggered off to Iceland, cos he thought the world was gonna end. I came to find this video, cos I had a memory in my head of Jaz playing drums and singing, and I thought "That can't be right". I must have just assumed at the time that it was Jaz.
You guys have it all wrong,jAZ WAS THERE INFRONT OF THE KEYBOARD,HE COULDNT SING BECAUSE HE HAD TAKEN UP BEE KEEPING AND HIS ASBESTOS FENCING MASK PREVENTED THIS.If you keep looking you will see a glimpse of him, with his 500 yard stare.
I always think of them as punk or industrial, but they are a unique band. Have loved them since first album in 1980. They were just a bit more pop from about 1982 until end of the eighties. Still good though.
This is gold! A historical document! Jaz on Iceland, leaving the band behind right before they appear on TOTP! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh fuck is that what happened here? I know he disappeared, didn't realise they actually went on to TOTP without him.
RIP Geordie 🙏 🔥
Ruhe in Frieden Geordie dein Gitarrensound war besonders.

Plus The Exolited in 1981
the astronaut on keyboards did it for me .. still have the single .. priceless
Bauhaus walked off midway thro their track they had to mime to and All about Eve just sat there as the track played lmo

Hear hear...well said
Such an amazing sound for 1982!
Loved them in the eighties when I was a punk..this is one of my favs by them..👍👍👍

R.I.P Geordie
I was a huge fan, sat on youths lap, got invited by jazz on the guest list, jazz was the most interesting member, not surprised he's a genius
Caroline Hyndes how was he like?'(jazz)
@@dirty06maggot sorry just seen this, actually Jaz was a really really nice guy, put me and my friend on the guess list for their next gig.
I love that tune
Youth. The coolest bassist on the planet

This is great quality footage better than my video copy from back in the day Geordie using an SG brilliant
Great band top tune
Total classic, two fingers to the powers that try to be
How’s that working out for the world?
Back to square one
Weird seeing Geordie without his signature ES.
Its even weirder seeing Youth without his Ric
Weird thing .... He could have held a Rickenbacker Tallywhacker it doesn't matter much when you're miming

Ha yeah - same here. This was the first time I ever saw them and thought the same thing.
Rip geordie........ 😢
From the days when music was interesting.
this is just so incredibly cool..... although jaz aint here and its mimed
Geordie and Youth look really, REALLY pissed off about Jaz being absent!
That just makes the performance even better! Youth looks like he'd been on a complete bender.
I thought it was raven.
Georgie and Raven look really annoyed about Jaz being absent
Jaz, you sneaky Rat! Hahaha! To be honest, he probably freaked out at the whole nuclear apocalypse possibility. Weird drugs, man.
Fucking shit hot band..loved them in the eights. .when I was a punk :)

@@front2427 They were all Whale watching in New Zealand by 1988...another bunch of so called Yuppie Punks....still love them sadly.
@@front2427 lol.. nice 1. I think it was Dr Alex Patterson that stood in.
God I remember that white jacket ...
Didn’t realise Patrick Swayze played in Killing Joke!
Classic Joke
'EMPIRE' Back Fire !.....Circa the time of the Falklands Crisis....????!!!!
Who sings this song?
I seen this band live. Shame that on TOTP you have to mine.
I snogged Yoof once 🙊
Ahh, the story behind this performance is quite a read. All is not as it seems.
Mums gone to Iceland ;)
So it remains a mystery who's in the nuclear contamination suit? I think those will be required couture soon.
Jimmy Savile, surely...?
I think it was Dr Alex Patterson.
Is that Youth? Jaz had little good to say about him when he was interviewed by Timmy Sommer on WNYU
Youth has been back in the band with Jaz for over 10 years now. I imagine they have a bit of a fractious relationship , but that's bands for you
Had a huge crush on youth but Jaz was actually the nicer person.
lol did they borrow one of kraftwerk's robots to replace Jaz on keyboards?
Duran Duran they ain’t !
Nope far more talented
And this is a good thing. What a weird comment.
Lol
Guess im the only one that liked both bands lol
Would have been tempting to sing "BBC sucks and Savile is a pedo!" 😂
Loved it but was it Punk or Goth by then ?
Deffo goth by 82 ,punk was dead then
Killing Joke were never Goth!
Loads of punks liked them (punk was definitely not dead in 82) , some goths as well, but Killing Joke were their own thing really.
I always think of them as punk or industrial, but they are a unique band. Have loved them since first album in 1980. They were just a bit more pop from about 1982 until end of the eighties. Still good though.
Why everything to be labelled ..Killing Joke are Killing Joke..
