IDAS NBZ Nebula Booster Dual-Narrowband Filter Review

  • In this video I compare the new and improved IDAS NBZ to the previous IDAS NBX. The IDAS NBZ is only briefly reviewed in this video, because my review of the IDAS NBX still covers all the data about these filters. The difference between the two filters is the NBZ is corrected for internal reflection, reducing halos and artifacts around bright stars, otherwise the filters are the same.
    Both of these filters are extremely well suited for high-speed, narrow-band, one shot color applications. I can produce a quality image with the IDAS NBZ and Celestron RASA 8 easily in an hour. I always strive to get as much data as I can get, but with the high transmission of the IDAS NBZ for both the hydrogen-alpha and oxygen-III emission lines, imaging at high speed is remarkably easy. The IDAS NBZ is my absolute favorite dual-narrowband filter on the market!

    Hey Cody, good comparison and glad I got the NBZ earlier this year.
    Do you think the IDAS NB3 (oiii + sii) would compliment the NBZ? Also any plans to test NB2 and NB3. I want to test that combination as I’m a OSC man and can’t folk out on mono and more filters.

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  3 роки тому

      I haven’t had any plans to pick one up as S-II is fairly weak in many targets. Personally I’d only shoot S-II if I’m going mono and want SHO images.

    Nice review Cody, I actually purchased the NBZ last month based on your review of the NBX. I specifically got this one over the L-enhance or extreme because it can be used for f/2 and slower f ratios as you mentioned. I contacted LDAS and the rep said as much. Have not had time to test it as I am still waiting on the EdgeHD8 I ordered in January. I plan to get the hyperstar as well. If I understand, this filter can also be used with to capture Ha or OIII if you use a mono chrome camera as well? - Cheers Kurt

      Hey Kurt,
      Glad to hear that! Yes, you could use this as an OIII/H-alpha luminance data filter.

      @@AstroBlender Thanks Cody. I still may end up getting the Baader f/2 for Ha but I will see how the NBZ does first. Cheers

    Hi, I am a novice astrophotographer from San Diego, I recently purchased an ASI 294mc Pro with an IDAS NBZ filter. I am planning to shoot wide images with the Canon 50 mm lens using my iOptron Skyguider. Could you please help with this? While setting up the imaging plan in the Astro Photography Tool, how should I set up the gear option? Should I run separate sets of exposures selecting Ha and OIII from the dropdown? What would you recommend? Thanks.

    Great review as always Cody! I have the celestron light pollution filter and works good on my 8" rasa, does this one perform better than the Celestron?. Thanks.

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  2 роки тому

      I wouldn’t say it performs better, they serve different purposes. This is a narrowband filter while the Celestron RASA LPR is a broadband filter.

    Cool filter Cody! I have a regular IDAS LPS-D2 it does a fantastic job. Did you do any comparison with L-enhance?

    • @Rob_1472
      @Rob_1472 3 роки тому +1

      My experience comparing NBZ vs L-enhance is that there’s more Ha data derived from the NBZ. Might just be me though 😂

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  3 роки тому +1

      The NBZ is amazing at high-speed and does well in slower focal systems as well. That to me makes it more valuable than the L-eNhance. The L-eNhance is still an excellent filter though. I like the narrower bands of the NBZ, personally.

    Hey Cody I was wondering if this filter would also be just as useful at f/7 or f/10? I ask because I have a hyperstar and I would love a multi-purpose filter for when I photograph at the native focal length of my edgehd 8. Thanks!

  • @VittorioSergi

    I get the necessity of increasing the band width to suit more focal ratios, that's a witty enough thing to make, but doesn't that result in the band pass itself being wider than desired.
    Example and correct me if i'm wrong.
    let's take the L-expreme, just because you used one, I used one and we both know what it can produce on say OTA's slower than F5.
    the optolong say it has a band pass of 7nm at FWHM, doesn't the NBZ go way, way past 15nm for its widening of the band pass to allow the use with a larger amount of OTAs?
    I mean, sure, you get to image the preshifted Ha signal, but you also get all the bandpass around it.
    I don't know if my argument has being presented as clear as i want.
    And it's not an argument, it's more of a queary on my part

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  3 роки тому

      The bands are 10nm, but they’re off-center with steep cut-offs, so they don’t transmit those other waves at really any high level. The L-eXtreme works well also, just not at high-speed.

      @@AstroBlender to be honest I didn't even like it at F4.8 or F6, halos galore on my two samples

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the halo issue is the real bummer on that filter. I no longer own an L-eXtreme, I just use the NBZ or L-eNhance depending on the telescope/camera for OSC.
