  • A beautiful Lake District Walk over the fells to Catbells and back along the wonderful shores of Derwent Water in North West Lakeland near Keswick.
    What a day this was...
The snow fell thick and fast the night before and we woke to a wonderful winter wonderland.
Not knowing wether we would make it there or not we set off to Keswick in the beautiful English Lake District to embark on our next adventure to conquer Catbells.
Keswick is a market town situated in northern west part of the Lake District and sits in the shadow of the Skiddaw group which is the oldest group of rock in the Lake District.
We just managed to get through the snow and to the car park at Gutherscale. It wasn't a surprise that we were the only car on the car park but thanks to our trusty Landrover we made it without much fuss.
The scenery just from the car park was simply jaw dropping and we couldn't wait to get our boots on and head off hiking up the fells. Our route would take us out from the car park and up the shoulder of the fell to Skelgill Bank then up onto the summit of Catbells.
We soon had to stop and put on our cleats as the snowy conditions were proving quite tricky as the frozen rocks covered in snow were proving troublesome. Cleated up we marched on towards the summit. Wainwright commented that this was a walk for the whole family from grandmothers to infants.. We stopped for a while and looked at the final scramble up to the summit of Catbells and gazed in awe at the fell which looked massive and menacing with the snow clinging to the crags and then commented on how fit Wainwrights Grandparents must have been.
Reaching the summit we were completely spoiled with the views and it was an absolute privilege to have Catbells summit all to ourselves.. something that doesn't happen very often on such a popular Wainwright.
The snowy landscape completely captivated us and it was a while before we moved off and found a nice sunny spot to sit and have a brew with a view.
Deciding not to carry on to Maiden Moor and High Spy we decided to take the path down at Hause Gate back towards Derwent Water.
At the foot of the path we made the decision to head right and pick up the the Cumbria Way path which hugs the shores of the beautiful Derwent Water instead of the usual Terrace path.
This decision turned out to be the perfect choice as the views we experienced along the way were simply breathtaking. So much so we spent far too long taking pictures and sitting admiring the views that our microphones with 5hr batteries ran out..
In the wonderful spring sunshine and the snow now gently melting we headed back to the car park where there were considerably more cars due to the improving road conditions..
This is one of our favourite walks so for just for the scenery and the chance to capture some fabulous photography was all round. Its also a walk that we noticed will change considerably with the changing seasons as the larch trees across Derwent will eventually remove the views of the crags below that show when the trees are bare in winter.
We really hope you enjoy the film and if you like what you see please give us a like and a subscribe.
    Thanks For watching..
    See you soon
    Matthew & Sue

"Mum, I've Made It!" love the shoutout guys. Amazing footage as always! You inspired me and my eldest to walk up Catbells, in slightly more blustery conditions. Great walk! Onwards and Upwards. Much love.

      Hi Jonnie,
      Thanks for your fabulous comments.
That one was particulally good as the scenery was just perfect with the snow, we couldn't have timed it better....
And, to be the only ones on the summit of Catbells is pretty unusual to say the least.
It's a fabulous walk and we said we would like to do the walk in each season as it would look completely different each time with the changing seasons.
      Thanks for watching!!
      All the best

      🤣🤣 Hi Keith...
      We never really fall out...
we just go quiet with each other and Sue gives me the odd glance to say "Are you sure you know where you're going!!" 🤣..
Especially when we get into a little trouble on the fells or loose the path...
Don't know if you've watched our 'Brutal Buttermere?' that was a classic example.. It was black dark when we got back.. Sue was pretty quite until she got sat back in the car..🤣🤣 😬😬
Thanks so much for watching 🙏
      All the very best
