I have this filter, and LOVE it!
As long as you take care of it by not letting it freeze, and back flushing occasionally; this filter will last you a long long long time.
I don't like the Sawyer bags. In the early days they failed occasionally. I put my Sawyer bag in a drawer and carry a two liter Platy bag with sport valve.
Unless you let it freeze or you do not clean the filter occasionally; THIS FILTER WILL GIVE YOU YEARS OF SERVICE.
That's good to hear. Every filter I have seen has pros and cons. I like the fact this one has the potential to last a very long time. I'm thinking about an inline carbon filter to improve the non pathogen protection.
Thanks Brian your opinion means a lot I will be adding one to my hurricane kit. 🌀
Glad to help
I like your humility and honesty. Very good review!
Thanks
We live in Arizona and water is vital. My wife asked to put a emergency kit together for her.
This was the first product I went and purchased.
TY for the review. 😊👍
Might want to look into Lifestraw also. More convenient.
You don't need to correct yourself. Your videos are great!
Thanks for doing this video Bryan. I just bought one and have not got it out to test it. Ill remember what you said as I run it through it's paces for the first time
It is a handy filter
...just like portable rocket stoves.... and tents!
Just bought it, haven't tried it. However I also bought the life straw and it works great, wondering why I didn't add these to my prep earlier...
thank you so much for this video , i just ordered 2 one for me one for my daughter , i've been on the fence about which to get i like this as it can screw into a regular water bottle if need be say the pouch breaks, your video really made my mind up thanks again! have an awesome christmas holiday !!!!
I'm glad it helped.
Does it filter salt water (sea water)?
+William Nascimento no! I don't know of any filter that does. I think you have to distill salt water
Thanks for the info!
Dude..is that Eric Clapton?
;-)
Can't you just backwash it with your mouth?
probably best to try not too. no sense adding bacteria to the front of your filter if you dont have to.
Salmonella is in meat..and this is meant for drinking wtf lol
Hmmm.
Not only does this filter 100,000 gallons this has more options you can drink it like using a LifeStraw directly out of a water source or you can put water in the collapsible bottle or if you find a water bottle or have a water bottle like a Poland spring or Dasani you can fill that up and hook the filter onto that so this has a lot of different ways to use it yet very very light even with the bag the plunger and the syringe and straw very compact very light
another awesome review brother, just bought one from Amazon using your link, hopefully they give you a little something and it adds up over time because I love your reviews and hope you keep it going! Thanks again!
Thanks
Thanks for your review. I got a Sawyer Mini last night and also the Sawyer filtration system. It filters up to a gallon at the time. After watching this I feel confident that I can use it.
Great video, I bought 3 of them thank you
Replaced the Katadyn Hiker with this! Lighter and more compact! Thanks Bryan for the review!
Andrew Quitugua I replaced my old Sweetwater. Thanks for watching.
100,000 gallons when the large Berkey filters, filter a lot less. Should we call BS on the 100k gallon claim? Seems a little far fetched.
Hello Bryan I just got the sawyer mini water filter what I do like is it can be made into a gravity filter you can see what it look's like on youtube just search sawyer mini gravity and click on The video by TheLionsDen72
I think the sawyer is getting to be the most popular. great review
Sawyer blows life straw out of the water for the simple reason you can filter water and put it in a container or water bottle. I have the msr mini works, befree, sawyers and lifestray. Sawyers is my personal favourite for back country, second is msr but takes way to many pumping to make clean water and is three times the price.
I like the fact that it screws onto a water bottle.
me too
Just bought this. Two pack for about $40. Thanks for this video Bryan!
I just got one thanks i got the Mini disk if you could squeeze or had to use gravity im try get atleast 2 or 3 of them
it is a great filter. I second the reccomendation. I use the 2L bags with my set up instead of the included 16 OZ bag.
Yeah, I like that this filter is pretty versatile with tubing connections on both ends as well as the threads.
Hey, we're giving away the Sawyer mini on your channel if you'll like to enter man. (:
BIG ARROW THAT SAYS "FLOW"
This man pushes the water AGAINST That arrow.
Smooth brained video.
Did you even watch the video? That's how you backflush the filter to clean it. Smooth brained comment.
Brian did you know the Sawyer foundation gives filters to people in 80 countries so the poorest of the poor can filter water and prevent waterborne illnesses
Take care brother. I stopped making alcohol stove videos years ago. Couldn't build a more fuel efficient stove
Wow, it's good to hear from you again. Stay safe.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose if I don't take care of myself who will? I recently bought a Sawyer Micro squeeze. It has more options than a Sawyer Mini including a very easy gravity filter
Thanks! Nice demonstration.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Great video! Thanks for uploading it.
+ColonelKudzu Thanks for watching it.
Very in-depth, thank you.
I appreciate it.
I bought this a year ago, and it's still going strong. That said, it's mostly used at the cottage and with "suspect" tap water.
I'm using it at work now with terrible tap water. If I were to use it in the wild with the possibility of chemical crap, I'd probably rig up a charcoal filter to use it as well.
I might have to buy another few ones for my aunt and uncle in Hong Kong. The tap water there is kind of suspect.
Great idea.
100,000 gallons. Isn't that about 2 or 3 lifetimes worth of total drinking water.
indeed
In winter I will just boil 🔥 my water source. I like having options to use this filtration system. Thanks for the review. 👍👍😁
cool
I just take 2 smart water bottles with me with the squeeze tops you can back flush the filter with them and they hold a lot more water
Cool
Thanks for your great review of this good product. I really like this filter… ATB, ken
Thanks Ken. By the way, I really enjoyed that Teddy Bear video. I never knew that story. I'd post a link but I'm on my iPhone right now. - Bryan
Survival On Purpose Hi Bryan. We "had to stop" in Delta National Forest after reading about the Teddy Bear / Roosevelt story. ATB, Ken
Great review. Like this kit, another to add on the wish list.
If you are like me you need a BIG piece of paper for that wish list ;-)
It also fits vodka bottles!! So does the sip tip off a smart water bottle lol!!
Hmmm
If you need clean water to back wash it, why not just drink the clean water?
You could do that but the point is to use water you have filtered to backwash it before it is completely stopped up, thereby extending the ability to continue to filter water. It takes way less water to backwash it than you will be able to filter after it is backwashed. So you filter and then backwash a couple of squeeze bags full and then you will be able to filter a bunch more bags full to drink.
Thanks for the review.. about a year ago I purchased a sawyer mini just like that one with the water bag for my get home bag in my vehicle. Just the other day I saw Sawyer's soft water bottle with a mini filter inside and a syringe for $19!!!!!! Wow great deal I purchased this Sawyer water bottle for traveling.. and emergency... Sawyer make some fantastic products which filters the water down to one micron!!
3:15 completely idiot proof
Indeed.
Let me revise the statement I made a week ago. After using the syringe to FORWARD flush the filter as many as ten times, I was then able to BACK flush the filter and actually get a stream of water using the provided bag. I was also able to use the filter as a straw. So, if, like me, you have initial trouble getting water flow, and the syringe won't back flush the filter, try forward flushing a few times to see if this will clear the filter and make it usable. I wish this had been in the instructions.
I'm glad you got it to work
Good review and product. This is definitely on my need to buy list. Keep up the good work. Are you a wood badge recipient ? If so what patrol, I am a bobwhite and a vigil member.
Thanks Stanley. No, I never made it to Woodbadge. I'm about to be a Scoutmaster for the second time, maybe I'll try to find the time.
Cool beans.
Love your channel. Great review. Checking out videos now to decide which water filter I want to buy for an upcoming pack in elk hunt. Thanks for what you do.
I used this last week during a 2 day trek in Belgium with a friend. We each drank 2 liters of water filtered from a river (La Lesse) though this thing. The water was good, but we have both been pretty sick the day after we came back! I spent almost 24 hours shivering in my bed not eating or drinking anything and going to the toilet every hour :) I don't think I will use it ever again unless I find out what happened...
maybe do a video showcasing a natural filter to use in the wild with maybe a plastic bottle :)
The mini comes so it can be used a lot of different ways.
1. As a squeeze filter.
2. As an inline filter for a bladder.
3. As a straw to drink from the body of water.
4. If you get an adapter from Batchstovez.com, or MiniBulldesign.con; you can set it up as a gravity filter. Should the bag of dirty water leak; the dirty water will run over the outside of the bag of clean water, and not contaminate the clean water. If I was using the adapter from Batchstovez; I would not not be drilling a vent hole. But that would be my decision.
Cool. I will check those adapters out. Thanks.
Thank you... just purchased one today at Fred Meyers for $20... I plan on giving my LifeStraw to a mother with two little children. Also, I have a Grayl with filters for heavy metals and viruses... only 300 gallons, but needed something to fill a bowl for my dog. Now, I have two!
+Jhere McKenzie cool
Thanks Brian. Good review. You answered all my questions about it. I have a Life Straw but I saw the capacity of this one and thought man we'll never use that one up 100,000 gallons is a lot of water. Like you say, I'll probably break the thing before I use it up. :)
Alan Sawyer I sure like mine Alan. I used it recently on the Appalachian Trail and it worked great.
i was on the fence, but then i saw you fumbling around with that syringe and knew i had to have one!
;-)
...squeezing clean water into plunger seems to totally make sense...Thank you!
Good review of an excellent product.
Walmart has the mini($19.99),and the squeeze($29.99).
The squeeze is only slightly bigger, and is supposed to be good for filtering 1,000,000gal.
Matthew Wayer Last time I checked the Mini was around $15 on Amazon at the link in the description. This is my favorite filter right now.
Great video. Exactly what I wanted to know.
Cool video,love the background!
I found that the included bag is really hard to fill up. I dunked it in the stream while trout fishing and it was difficult to get the water to flow into the bag since it is so stiff. Any tricks on how you filled yours? At least it works on a water bottle!
+Kayak Hacks Fishing I either find somewhere the water is running over a rock in a small waterfall or sort of scoop it up. I can usually get it about 2/3 full scooping and it takes about 3 or 4 bags to fill my Nalgene. Or you can do like my son (who is an Eagle Scout and obviously smarter than his Dad) and use your Stainless cup to fill the bag. The cup will be sterilized anyway.
HaHa! That's the problem. I did not have my son with me. I only made First Class while, like your son, he had the drive to go all the way.
Thanks!
Can you backwash it just by blowing clean water back through if your on a trip and don’t have the syringe. And does it work with dirty water
I'd say yes, just squeeze the bag
Will this gravity flow from a dirty water bladder to a clean jug? Or do you have to squeeze for it to work? Thank you.
I think so. I know these will work that way as well. Either is a good choice in my opinion ua-cam.com/video/Y9J8q2Q-pcM/v-deo.html
I think the rest of their gilters are rated at 1,000,000 gallons. Nothing to sneeze at.
Unless you are filtering for a municipality you wont ever live long enough to filter that much water. Ive got 2 minis. Great review. Great product.
Id go with platypus bags though.
That's one I the things I like about this filter is the versatility. Camelbak has some quick-connect adapters that make it really easy to install an in-line filter.
They say the mini will last 3 life times, if you're drinking one gallon of water a day.
Great review, and thanks for doing it. I just picked one up this morning, and glad to see it demonstrated before I actually use it. The Walmart store's here (No. Colo) carry it, and it's about 6 bucks cheaper there than our local sporting good's stores. Happy Trails!
you too
Been wanting to get one of these Bryan. Are they available through your Amazon website?
+Leslie Hunt you can get anything Amazon offers and support the channel by going to
survivalonpurpose.com/Amazon
Where can I buy these at a brick and mortar store
Josh O'Connor Pretty much anywhere that sells camping stuff. My local Walmart has them, Academy Sports, REI and I'm sure lots of other places/
Hey man thanks for the quick reply. Great videos watched a few of them. Keep em comin
I'll do my best. Thanks.
thank u so much for replying a lot of questions or comments go unanswered on yt i appreciate it and all ur videos which i've been binge watching lol
Thanks for the support!
I bought a couple but haven't tried them yet, but out of all the channels on here I actually trust yours to be honest, so thanks for the review.
They are a little slow to use but pretty simple.I use them every time I backpack.
I just bought one and can’t wait to use it
Thanks for great review! :)
BTW the collapsible bottle fits great into my Rapdom Tactical Messenger Bag (thanks Preparedmind101) mobile pouch.
+Michal Urban It is a great filter.
Got one after watching. Danke!
I Like because its light weight I bought one about 2 months ago. Good Video Brian
Thanks Rusty. Yep, I keep one in my emergency pack at all times.
Bought one today...watched your video....it is great...Tks!!!!!!
Cool
so I can take this and go to a random puddle on the street and drink straight out of it?
I'm also sure about that. I don't know if this thing takes out petroleum contaminants or not
The best flow I can get out of mine is a flow of fast drops. No stream whatsoever. At one point I said "WTH", locked my fingers and exerted all the force I could on the bag. Fast drops. Then I just turned it upside down and measured the output into a measuring cup. It did almost 2 cups of water in just under 3 hours. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, maybe I have a defective unit, I don't know. But I won't be taking this one afield.
Silly question: are you using it in the correct direction of flow? Also, have you tried backwashing it with the syringe?
Well, the bag only fits one way. The syringe will not back wash. It (the syringe) will work to some degree in the direction of the arrow. But I do thank you for your video. I've had that filter for some time and had never gotten around to testing it. Better to find out now than later.
lol got two of these then threw away the instructions .... Thanks for the top up lesson :)
Glad it helped.
Lifestraw or Sawyer mini, now that's it's been a couple years?
Probably the Sawyer between those 2 but you should search my channel for the HydroBlu video.
Can you sucsesfully filter salt water for drinking with it ?
No.
I'm getting two of them !! I have two life straws, can't clean them. thanks as always !
These are good. You might want to check out the Renovo Trio. It is really a better filter. It costs a little more and isn't cleanable bit the components are replaceable.
Snore.........
Wake up !!! Your hair is on fire!
Too much intro, just demonstrate the thing
Excellent waterfilter, have used it several times and it filters great, I have not being sick after drinking from a creek with this filter, and it´s really compact.
I carry it always to the woods and its that small so I don´t even feel the filter in my jacket.
I agree

Thanks for watching.
Awesome! I'm sold on it : )
+Matt.Cook.Oregon so am i
Great video! Very informative! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Can you do an episode on how to make an bowl and arrows
+PiruBlood211 Maybe one day. I actually started a bow a long time ago and it was turning out really well and started warping. We'll see.
Haha nice shirt, my birthday is April 19th
Thanks
100 000 gallons. I wouldn't like to be the guy drinking the 100 000th gallon...
well, using 1 gallon a day, it would take 273 years to use up the filter.
I'd pretty much say you wouldn't be alive to drink that 100,000th gallon.
...that's a cool thing to know! Thanks!
Is there a storage lifespan for this item?
I don't know
Bryan, this is one of my favorite and easy to use filters. I put a carbon filter on the outlet and always get great tasting water. Thanks for the review.
I'm thinking about doing the same thing.
Hi, Is ther a video how to build the carbon filter on this filtration system?
HERE is The Savior
HalleluYAH translates “Praise ye YaH”
YaH is The Heavenly Father
YaH arrives via the TENT OF MEETING
YaH was Who they Crucified for our sins

Good stuff big guy thanks...
Thanks. I appreciate it.
love your videos. keep them coming.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Thanks a lot I bought it after that review !!
Still my go to backpacking filter
are sawyer sqeeze fakes out there?
I have not seen any but I would not be surprised.
been using these for a number of years now in all different environments. yet to get sick haha
Me either
Really?...
John Miller yeah, surprising??
Tacticool_Flannel
I didn't know if you were joking or not that's all. I just bought one.
I own one really like it
thanks again
Tried and true
to many parts you may loses it!
+Minh Nguyen you really only need the filter.
Nothing is idiot proof!!! lol Great review!! I picked one up about two weeks ago.
Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you Brian
Thanks for watching.
wonder how these systems work with salt water
They don't work with salt water. At all.
Really?
thanks!
Thanks for watching.
Great video, thanks. Own a Sawyer myself. Well worth the $18 US.
Darren Watson I agree. It is great if the main concern is nasty critters. It is not, however, too effective against contaminants. The Berkee Sport bottle does a great job in that department but it just doesn't have near the capacity. I guess everything is a trade off.
I'm quite skeptical about the 100,000 gallon rating for the Sawyer for real world applications. Given its hollow fibres, they would clog over time with many different particles that backwashing could not remove all of & then eventually become useless. I would guess even if using on tap water you may get a max of 5,000 gallons out of it. i do like the lifestraws more realistic rating of (by your report) 264 gallons. Given though the lifestraw is designed for dirty water i would guess its good for about 30 gallons max but that still makes it worth it for me. If i carried either with me i would also carry a primary and secondary filter as well (such as fine cloth & a filter cartridge sports bottle) then use the Sawyer or Life Straw as the last step.
P.S. I really enjoy your videos. They seem well thought out, thorough & to the point.
+Sketti Boi thanks. I try
Sketti Boi What information are you basing your estimates on?
If you're in a situation when water filtering is needed, how would you be able to clean the filter?
+010karl010 you use some water you have already filtered to back flush it.
How often do you need to back flush vs want to back flush? Thanks.
I don’t know. I’ve never let mine get to where I “need” to backflush. It’s too easy to just do it.
