I was surprised with the distance of the back strobes. Thought they would be just outside frame next to the red cushions of the net. Thanks for that side view.
Matt, all that love for Polar Pro and no affiliate links? Come on bro! Let's get you PAID!! The least we can do for all the great content to contribute to our niche. Love it and thank you!
Love your work, i shoot media days in Texas and cover the large 6A schools which are the biggest so the VB teams I cover in Varsity typically have 15-20 girls, so i have my challenges as well. I love sooting small schools/teams, so much easier. I typically run two FJ400s and three FJ200s.
You're amazing and appreciated. Especially your willingness to answer questions. You've helped us all a lot. And helped the students and athletes whose photos we take
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I ran a similar setup minus the filter for a high school volleyball team last week. I always learn something from watching your videos to help level up my own work, let alone allowing me to do stuff nobody in my immediate area that nobody else is doing! As always I can't wait for the next one! Cheers!
Matt, thank you very much for sharing this video. I know there are other people out there who do shorts but yours was extensive and thorough. I’ve always wondered how they create those blue streaks now I know I can’t thank you enough for your expertise and your time to help those of us, who are always learning you are the best and I say that in all honesty keep up the great work and thank you for sharing
I learn so much from your videos Matt! Thanks for taking the time to do this and answering my questions. Had two quick questions. 1) How do you decide when to use an umbrella vs a soft box? 2) Neat top on the rod angle for where the light needs to be. Any tips on the angle of a soft box or just need to take a pic to ensure the light is pointed at the right angle?
Hi Matt, thank you so much for sharing some knowledge. This is exactly what I wanted to use for a basketball team. I tested a shot with the same setup. What were your camera settings?
Love your videos Just staring out. I have camera and lenses but no lighting. What would u recommend getting starting out to start with that wouldn’t be way too expensive
First off, I love your work and how you explain what you do! Could I pull something similar off with 3 Godox AD400 Pro strobes and two 45" soft boxes ? I am so new to this, but I am running out of money for equipment! Thank you for any feedback
Great content as always - love the rod tip! Did I hear you say you're focusing on the back row? I always focus on the front center of groups because focus typically falls backwards...just curious. And did you share the filter link?
Yeah I guess I did say it backwards. There’s about 1/3 in the acceptable focus area in front of and 2/3 behind your focal point. So I guess really either would be fine with a group photo like this. Here you go! www.polarpro.com/products/bluemorphic-filter-recon?srsltid=AfmBOopGw2PxLxB_dIyUwRsvyHrAnUEpMy9jymNCu65_LARag_7IjwHZ
Hi Matt, great video as always. Does the mist filter have any effect on the rim light? Was there any issue cutting out the players without a hair light? Some of the top of some players’ heads seemed to fade into the background.
It makes any light a little more bright and glow. But it depends on how strong it is. I had someone else cut them out so h don’t really know haha. But if the color is similar between the hair and background it’s usually a little harder.
Matt! Excellent work! Do you ever experience Moire with the Sony and your setups? Did a media day shoot yesterday, struggled with Moire with my Canon R6ii.
Hey Matt! There's some good info here. Just curious, you mentioned you shot at 24 with a 24-70 lens. Do you get wide-angle distortion, and how do you handle it?
Matt I’m going to throw another question/comment at ya, the last one I’m waiting on a response, but what is the depth of your umbrellas from the flash head, close or far. my understanding is the farther the umbrella is the wider/softer the light is? Thank you
did you shoot these with the new sony a9iii or did you use a older camera since ur using so many flashes and dont wanna play around with the synce timing vs old cameras you just know how to use it with some many flashes ?
They were all with my A7RV. There’s no need for the a9iii inside in those conditions. Plus I’d rather have a larger file to crop the sides in a little.
Surprised the main lights aren't spread just a little more. Do you change, or worry about the angle of the lights when you have athletes wearing glasses? Noticed in the 13:21 pic the boy in the back having shiny lenses. Would you typically worry about trying to ask them to pose/angle themselves differently? Thanks for the great info!
@@MattHernandez awesome brother. I love your content. We live in Bowling Green, so not far away. Unfortunately, we took the first two sets off of McCracken and then dropped the next three! Great team.
What are your reasons for using reflective umbrellas rather than shoot through? I know the difference, I’m just curious why you chose reflective umbrellas.
@@MattHernandez That is true my friend. For the past 3 years I’ve photographed an indoor karate Dojo team using his 2 34” reflective umbrellas. But I did temporarily consider switching to my 2 43” shoot through umbrellas. Maybe I should go with my 2 43” reflective umbrellas. I know how to place them eliminating shadows. I’ll do it your way, because it works, ……… and you’re a Pittsburgh Steelers fan🕺🏻
Matt's timeliness is exceptional. Get out of my head man! 😅 I'm going to take Volleyball photos in a couple of hours. Probably won't get them that nice but I'll try some of these tips.
@@the-secrettutorials So I didn't have two large umbrellas but because I only had 12 girls (6 wide in two rows) I managed with my long strip box turned horizontal and used my other 2 lights for rim lights with focus reflectors. I probably could have done better but I think Matt's guidance was helpful in giving me a vision to shoot for and I liked the rim lights a lot. I think I needed to raise the power of one of them or at least turn it differently. But we were in a mad rush toward the end as open gym started 30 minutes before they told us it would so my 600 watt light ended up being a rim light when it should have been the main light but I had no time between individuals and the team photo so I just turned the strip box and shot my 300w light at full power and it was ok.
Hi Matt, thanks share yours experience, I just think if you consider to do in Spanish video, I believe a lot Spanish followers be happy to see yours videos. Thanks
@MattHernandez oh ok. I read through only the first 10 ish comments and didn't see it. Phew ok lol. Your videos for lighting setup have been the most helpful that I've found. Thank you!

If test it to see but you can usually tell from a side view. I don’t use soft boxes because they don’t get a big of a spread.

You can for 1-3 people but probably not for a group unfortunately.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this info. Do you shoot lower for individual portraits of girls on a dance team? Or do you prefer eye level or higher?
No problem! I usually do low and eye level and higher if I feel like I need to. But it’s easier just to do all of the above so you’re covered.

I've been doing no tripod for team photos. Do you recommend using them?
I do yes. It makes head swaps a lot easier
Matt! Excellent work! Do you ever experience Moire with the Sony and your setups? Did a media day shoot yesterday, struggled with Moire with my Canon R6ii.
Thank you! No not usually I don’t. Maybe you should switch to Sony 😂
@@MattHernandez I've certainly been eyeing it! Maybe black Friday will help 🤣Thanks for the reply!
Thanks Matt. What power mist you use? Thanks.
No problem! The least powerful one I believe.
Hey Matt in what case should I use deep focus reflector?
Any time you need a lot of power or to focus a lot of light in one specific area!
Hey Matt! There's some good info here. Just curious, you mentioned you shot at 24 with a 24-70 lens. Do you get wide-angle distortion, and how do you handle it?
A little but that’s expected. I just leave room on the edges so the subject near the edge aren’t distorted too much.
Matt I’m going to throw another question/comment at ya, the last one I’m waiting on a response, but what is the depth of your umbrellas from the flash head, close or far. my understanding is the farther the umbrella is the wider/softer the light is? Thank you
That’s correct! I extend the umbrella rod a few inches past the FJ400 battery
Is there a way to do a team in a much smaller space? Like 25 kids with about 40 feet of length space and 20 feet wide?
Yeah just probably can’t use the edge lights

@MattHernandez
Are these the 7 foot standard umbrellas or the 7 foot deep umbrellas?
Regular I think. I don’t think westcott makes more than one kind this size.
@@MattHernandez i 100% misunderstood the website. Would you recommend someone by the Mani Ortiz beauty dish first or the 7 umbrellas first?
@@mjrinfl oh ok. It depends on what you need it for honestly. 7’ would be more for groups or studio. Manny Ortiz is more for anything portrait wise.
@MattHernandez thank you for the reply my friend. Let's get a Paducah workshop sooonnn pretty please????!

I do sometimes but with the team photo it’s hard to anything about it. For individuals I do angle the light so there’s no glare.
