There is another perk, which is especially valued by victors from poorer districts,. It was mentioned in the books but not the movies (at least not that I recall). Once every month, there is a huge gift of food and some other necessities for the whole victor's district, not just for the victor. It lasts a year until another Games.
A bit of Haymitch's history: District 12 has only had 2 victors before, with Haymitch being the only one alive at that point. He won at age 16 in the 50th edition of the games. That year, the capitol reaped twice as many participants, that is, he endured more than we could imagine. Then his entire family and girlfriend were killed by the Capitol because they didn't like the way he became a victor (hence his concern for Katniss and Peeta's fate). After that, he was forced to mentor children who each year end up dying anyway.
@@reflectingwithry I can't recall them going into it at all in the films so I think it is book details. There is a fantastic fan film here on youtube (ua-cam.com/video/7mUjssn86h4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MainstayPro) detailing the events
Fun Fact (as far as I remember when I read the books 10 years ago): In the book, the mutated dogs at the end have their faces modified to resemble the looks of the dead tributes, so there was a dog that looked like Rue just to make it even more f***ed up and terrifying LMAO
In a video interview made for her publisher, Scholastic, Collins says that the idea came to her when she was channel-surfing one night in bed. "I was very tired … and I was flipping though images on reality television where these young people were competing for a million dollars or whatever, then I was seeing footage from the Iraq war, and these two things began to fuse together in a very unsettling way, and that is the moment where I got the idea for Katniss's story." I always found her explanation so interesting.
22:53 Katniss killed 3 personally: the girl with the bow with the Trackerjackers, the boy with the spear that killed Rue, and the District 1 boy with the dogs at the end.
I never paid close attention to Cato's words up till now. He basically told her to kill him, since he was "dead anyway". He was a career who volunteered thinking what a fun fest this is gonna be, yet once he actually killed so many people he began to lose his soul bit by bit (very Harry Potterish, I gotta say). In a certain way he wanted Katniss to do it so he wouldn't have to live with all that it intails, winning the games. How very sad.
Haha yeah I don't think they could have made that connection when they watched this because they watched this before any of the eugene episodes on twd trying to survive in the same way haha. I think this was filmed almost 2 months ago.
Hunger Games Catching Fire (the 2nd movie) is even better. It's pretty epic and the music is so good. You guys definitely should watch the whole trilogy.
Oh don't rule out young adult fiction! Just because the characters are young doesn't mean there's not real stakes! Since you like this I definitely recommend continuing the series. Good dystopian scifi.
I see commenters have already explained Haymitch’s backstory, but to add some detail. He won the 50th hunger games & this movie starts with the 74th HG, 24 yrs later, which means that haymitch has had to mentor 48 kids from his district & watch them die, year after year (in addition to snow having his entire family killed & his girlfriend). Just thought I’d mention this to explain his aversion & dismissive attitude towards peeta & katniss in the beginning.
i am so happy you posted part 2 already i couldn't have waited!!! cant wait to see you react to the other hunger games movies, you both are my absolute favorite reaction channel:) sending love from berlin
The theme I love in these movies is the media. Very relevant to today. How much of what we are told and shown in the media is accurate to reality? How many people are playing things up for the cameras and for social media, and to what extent? Not to mention the overreaching government and disarmed citizenry. Jennifer Lawrence has FANTASTIC acting in these movies, she just gets better and better. I’m glad you guys enjoyed this one, the second one is much better in my opinion!
I remember hearing about the books & I figured it was another YA novel, in the same general vibe as Twilight. I didn’t go out if my way to see it, but when it popped up on cable one day I watched it & thought it was surprisingly well done. Another great thing about these films is that next one is even better & they stay solid throughout all 4 movies.
The movies are amazing and very well done but the books are something else, I remember reading the first book in 1 day, that's how much it captivated me, they're just so good
By the way those dogs featured at the end of the film are inspired by the Roman gladiator dog breeds that have went extinct since then they were also used on the front lines in battles for hundreds of years
Really fun watching you all react having NO clue what it was about beforehand. I expected Trin to lose feeling to her body parts multiple times! And not to be "the book person," but there's a few great things from the books that are left out: Katniss loses hearing in one ear after blowing up the supplies, and therefore has an ongoing handicap The "devil dogs" in the book had the faces and voices of the killed contestants, so they were literally running from a devil dog with Rue's face & voice. Fucked up. People have tried to fight against it, and they get "disappeared" (like the game runner with the poison berries). There is no free speech or dissent. The tributes from District 1 & 2 are almost always volunteers, and they train their whole life to go into the Games. It is a huge point of pride, and most winners are from 1 & 2. Hence Cato's tragic speech at the end... He thought he was serving his district, and only at the end did he realize he was used.
The new Prequel movie comes out on Thanksgiving, and it is about President Snow's backstory. The Hunger Games movies are great are worth reacting to Rob & Trin.
I love this series. I think because it was a YA series that came out a bit after Twilight that a lot of people thought it was a lot lighter fare than it was. But, at their heart, these are anti-war books (inspired by the author switching channels between Survivor and the Iraq War, and also the myth of Theses and the Minotaur where children were sacrificed.)
Another enthusiastic watchalong with the two of you, thanks for that. And yes, it seemed like for a while there were quite a few 'teen-angst-dramas that were straight from YA novels after the Twilight series came to the big screen and all competing with each other... then there was this fresh surprise, and the fact that they actually get better is just a happy shocker. I'm nowhere near their demographic and yet I've watched the series a number of time and get drawn in every time.
These are my favorite books! I never liked that they were compared to twilight. Completely different. Although I only saw the first twilight movie and only once. But pretty sure they’re worlds different.
I'm just so excited that you're on the HG train. Looking forward to the rest of the series. I'm geeking out over here, telling you guys trivia while you react like you can hear me lmao Fun fact: The games finale with the dogs is quite a bit different from the book. In the book, they're more like wolves, and each one uniquely resembles one of the fallen tributes. It was meant to represent how they all eventually became monsters in the games. They even have their eyes, and Katniss recognizes several of them, including Rue.
I remember when this movie was being made & my wife was super excited bc she read the books. I knew I'd have to see it so i read them too. I also remember not thinking id like them. Idk if it was the title or thinking they would be "girl books/movies" but i ended up loving them all. The books were so brutal! Thanks for doing these!
You were wondering how old she is in the story...I read the books a while ago, but if I'm not mistaken, she's supposed to be 16. There were 3 books, but they turned it into 4 movies. The 3rd book is in 2 parts, like the last Harry Potter book was made into 2 movies.
I watched a bootleg copy of this movie when it first came out and I loved it. However I had no idea that it was a part of a series. Didn't realise there were books or more to the story. I was so upset by the ending because it didn't feel finished. Eventually I realised there were books lol.
I also did not know what to expect when I first watched this movie. First time I ever saw Jennifer Lawrence. Her character was amazing. Yeah, it was dark as most dystopian movies are. The people living in luxury are so dead inside, which is why the Games took the shape they did; to entertain. The games not only serve that purpose, but also helps to "cull the herd" to keep any thoughts of revolt in check. The series is very good. Great show, you guys.
The second one is my personal favorite. It's hard to imagine where the story can go from here but it's wild and gets even darker. You'll definitely like it.👍
When this came out, I too wasn't interested in ever seeing this in my lifetime. Somewhat forced to watch, 15 minutes in and I was wide eyed, jaw dropped, and sitting on the edge of my seat with tears in my eyes. Glad you two enjoyed it! I kinda knew you would. Its hard to think of how brutal the world could get. And also what brought society to that point.
The people hunting down Katniss are careers they train for the hunger games and volunteer for the games. They are from districts one and two where it is seen as a great opportunity to participate in the games.
Rob: What’s the worst they can do? To answer that, President Snow went to the Gus Fring school of villainy. School motto “If I can’t kill, I’ll sure as shit make you wish you were dead.”
I was so excited to see this drop! What a wonderful reaction. Five minutes in and you were crying, Trin was crying, and I was crying. There are few books that I will read more than once and this is one of those few. I've also lost count of how many times I've rewatched this series. I've learned not to pre-judge a book/movie/show just because it's geared toward young adults. I have often found that the stories are more compelling and the characters are more interesting than I would have guessed. I love that you're reacting to this series!
17:39 Oh speaking of Legolas, Katniss Everdeen is up there among the legendary fictional archers like Legolas, Hawkeye, Green Arrow, Neytiri, and a TWD character you've met but haven't seen using bow and arrow just yet lol
The higher the district number the richer the people. The rich ones pick and train their tribute from childhood and then at 18 they volunteer. Thus district 1 and 2 have had the most winners.
The mutts at the end are supposed to be the late tributes. They stood more so on their hind legs and had fur matching their hair and Katniss saw their far too humanlike eyes. So twisted. And Cato did not die nearly as quickly. They laid there for hours while the mutts ate the unprotected parts of him before katniss finished it. Awful. And THEN they told them they still couldn’t finish together. The adaptation is still amazing, but it still somehow manages to dull down the seemingly endless evil.
To add to this, I’ve always wished Katniss would’ve ended up a little more scarred in the end. I haven’t read the books in a while, but I’m sure her & peeta sustain legit injuries along the way.
@@raianthony8492 agree, in the books she has several intense injuries. The most intense is the one on her forearm after Johanna cut the tracker out that 13 didn’t even want shown off because it was so ugly to them. She even lost a whole ass spleen
Can’t wait for your reaction to the rest of the series. It’s my favorite movie series next to the MCU. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do 🎉. Also read the books because they bring a lot more insight into the characters and you can see how “dark “ the story line can take.
To answer your question, in the book, winners are given the perks of 'live happily ever after' with mansions and riches, etc. The only thing they have to do is to mentor the tributes in the next years. Haymitch, for example, spent his life drinking in his mansion after winning. But, you know, the Capitol can always change the rules and President Snow is a petty man.
Idk if anyone said it but the girl that died because of the berries knew they were poisonous. She ate them so she wouldn't have to fight because she knew she is at a disadvantage
It’s a sound theory for the movies I guess but that is definitely not a true fact, and it’s especially not true in the books at all. That’s not how foxface as a character is. The nightlock berries only grow on the outskirts of district 12 and they weren’t in any of the training stations, plus foxface is smart because she’s sneaky and steals food from the other tributes without them noticing, she isn’t good at actually getting food herself. When Katnuss blew up the careers supplies, foxface lost her food source as well since she was relying in the careers stash. Foxface was starving by the point she stole the berries, not only that she stole cheese from Peeta as well. If she was planning to kill herself she wouldn’t have stolen that. It’s because she was starving and trusted Peeta since he was picking the berries to eat. Foxface died because everyone worries about underestimating their enemies but she overestimated them which is just as dangerous and that’s what git her killed. The only way that theory works for the movie is because of the training scene and even that is a stretch, because the exercise she was doing has nothing to do with identifying edible plants, it was a matching game that was a show of reflex than anything. I get having this theory but I don’t get why people tell it like it’s a fact when it was never the case.
So happy to see this in my notifications this morning! My favorite reactors watching a film of my favorite book series. I’m an avid book reader and a full-on adult but this is pretty much my favorite books. The main characters might be teens but it’s very much adult subject matter. Looking very much forward to seeing you watch the rest!
Rue is and or became the main reason katniss wants to end the hunger games. The main lead dude can never remember his name the one who controlled it. He had to kill himself as he broke the rules and let the both of them win. And Snow made him kill himself.
the books were commisioned by scholastic to teach kids about war and politics and the writer, suzanne collins, is acyually a screenwriter. her novels follow the three act formula wjth three books, all of which have been broken up into three acts, so dw about the pacing/milking of the story ❤
In the books she used her last arrow on his hand and he fell but the dogs didn't kill him so they had to listen to him die slowly for almost a day. But I can see why they didn't do that for the movie
Everyone on here so excited to watch the other reactions and I'm sitting trying to let everyone know they don't have to wait to watch the movies! They are all already on patreon!!!! Yay! Support Rob and trin! They are the best reactors ever.
I love this movie, I watched in the cinema when it came out and also watched it in school twice, in year 8 and 9 in English. Great movie, can't wait to see the reaction for the other 3 movies.
Squid Game is 100% worth your time. Yes, it is very, very dark, and twisted, but it is _exceptionally_ well made, from the writing, to the acting, to even the overall design of the show. Amazing show; worth all of the hype. The only downside is the dark theme, but if you can handle Hunger Games, you can handle Squid Game.
Awwee jeeze these movies get you so flippin hooked! The next movie catching fire is even more crazy. If you loved this one I promise you will love even more the second one
Not a spoiler- districts all have different jobs, 12 is coal mining. District 1-2 provide the ‘police’ for all the district & the capitol. They train with weapons as a ‘career’ it’s why those 4 stuck together. Almost all the winners are from those two districts. And yes Hamish is a drunk because of what he had to do, but also, as a winner he has to help train 2 kids every year since he was a teen and has watched them ALL die. If any had lived they would have been victors & training the new selections every year.
Donald Sutherland, ladies and gentlemen! an actor with a capital A! thank God, he lived to see the end of the series unlike (spoiler).i can't imagine how his death would affect the filming process! after all, who could replace him ??
Young adult fiction. The darker episodes are coming. Very dark view, I think. I think you all will really enjoy the following movies--not just for the young.
22:10 If you look at this scene closely you can clearly see Peeta is the one signalling Katniss to shoot Cato in the hand. And she hit it perfectly.
the 3 finger sign is a sign of respect. It means, admiration, gratitude and saying goodbye to someone you love.

Katniss had 3 kills. 2 direct (Marvel and Kato), 1 indirect (Glimmer)
just wanted to say that I love your reactions.
The game master’s death was actually inspired by The death of Socrates by poisoning of hemlock
I love this first one. BUT the second movie, catching fire is my absolute favorite. Can't wait to see your reactions.
I hope you do ALL of the Hunger Games movies, they're really great movies, they're DEFINITELY better than so many more franchises that are out there.
We watched all of them just need to edit them for youtube!
"A slinky, if you find some stairs" 😂😂
🙈🙈
Idk if anyone said it but the girl that died because of the berries knew they were poisonous. She ate them so she wouldn't have to fight because she knew she is at a disadvantage
She was smart she def decided to go that way
It’s a sound theory for the movies I guess but that is definitely not a true fact, and it’s especially not true in the books at all.
Y’all reacting to one of my favorite movies series is the best part of my day so far. 😂🎉
the books were commisioned by scholastic to teach kids about war and politics and the writer, suzanne collins, is acyually a screenwriter. her novels follow the three act formula wjth three books, all of which have been broken up into three acts, so dw about the pacing/milking of the story ❤
Thank you guys so much for posting both parts at the same time!! its really a game changer. Love your content!
So glad you both are watching this. The movies to come get better. ❤
In the books she used her last arrow on his hand and he fell but the dogs didn't kill him so they had to listen to him die slowly for almost a day. But I can see why they didn't do that for the movie
Yeah, I think they would be surprised about how dark the books are.
Everyone on here so excited to watch the other reactions and I'm sitting trying to let everyone know they don't have to wait to watch the movies! They are all already on patreon!!!! Yay! Support Rob and trin! They are the best reactors ever.
You guys are going to enjoy what’s to come
I love this movie, I watched in the cinema when it came out and also watched it in school twice, in year 8 and 9 in English. Great movie, can't wait to see the reaction for the other 3 movies.
Hyped for part 2! If you like it, you have to read the books after, they are sooo gooood and go into much more detail.
This is my favorite out of the 4. It surprised me, because it caught me offguard. Your reaction was entertaining. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Sooo happy your watching these.. The 2nd film is my favourite. Can't wait to see your reaction to the rest 😊👍🏻

@@Amy-vr5yt okay cool ! Wasn’t sure how much ahead they were.
@@rumham7466 Yeah not always clear!
Awwee jeeze these movies get you so flippin hooked! The next movie catching fire is even more crazy. If you loved this one I promise you will love even more the second one
i love this sm !! i can’t wait for y’all to watch the other movies
READ THE BOOKS...PLEASE PLEASE movies are good but the books OMG
You should watch The Maze Runner next. If you like The Hunger Games you will definetly like The Maze Runner.

Young adult fiction. The darker episodes are coming. Very dark view, I think. I think you all will really enjoy the following movies--not just for the young.
