What was being used to lubricate the threads? Also it looks like there was a gap after tightening shouldn't the two parts be tightened until flush?

We used Wd40 to lubricate the threads. Also, you'll notice when we spray the WD onto the threads, they do not go all the way down. There is a slight gap and that is what you are seeing. We tightened the nut as far as it would go so it's fully seated
