    Oh man, that frayed wire is AWEFUL. Looks to me like they tried to save $0.01 by pulling out that white sensor instead of the proper sensor port. It's too bad as they look like decent cells. They asked me a couple of times to review this battery but I declined. Glad someone covered it! Too many options on the market these days to keep track of.

    • @WillProwse
      @WillProwse  2 роки тому +17

      Right?! I cannot believe that wire. They must have used a lot of force too. Yikes. Yeah the cells looked nice, and the balance lead. I hope we see this BMS more, I do like it when it's configured properly. Probably just a cheap PCB that multiple companies are buying. Can work with various voltage batteries.

      To Note Though-- Even though this dr. Prepare case looks very similar to most of the other ones that will is mentioning, this case is different on top. On one of the company’s pictures, the screws show to be exposed! On others, they are still there but under something.

      Wire was probably supposed to be tucked in but wasn't or came out. Perhaps only held in place with a small piece of captan tape. Then whoever was screwing the cases shut was going super fast and just went right through the wire. when you're paid by the piece or have some supervisor only worried about production speed, this stuff happens.

    That is indeed scary. "Sealed" batteries in this arena seem to all say the same thing, we have something to hide. Granted, there are good quality batteries that are sealed, it is hard to know if they are sealed for your protection or theirs. Slowly but surely I am coming to a realization though observation alone that when a battery can be serviced, they are usually much higher build quality. With so many of these serviceable batteries available now at a good price it kind of narrows it to DIY or serviceable for me. I really don't want to run the risk of open conductors in a case like that. That just scares me so much. Glad you do these Will, it has added to my knowledge considerably. At least 90% or more of my knowledge of solar comes from you and what you share on this channel. I still want to see what the outcome is of a full test of LTO on Grade A cells. I know it has been a bit of a thing with you actually getting the right cells, and seems like a lot of people are only able to get grade b regardless of what they paid for, (which btw, I hope they refunded you for that). Thanks for what you do.

      To be fair, this battery had screws. Looks like there was some kind of plug in the hole. Wish Will would have explored that a little more. I'd be a lot more likely to buy a battery that could be disassembled without a saw. The sad reality is that even if the reviewed battery was good inside, that doesn't stop them from changing the design. Trust but verify!

By the time they sent the new ones though it was late in December and I didn't need to mow. Finally I got to mow with it, and in the middle of the first mow, it is dead. a third battery is bad. I'm going to go buy a different brand. I don't have time to keep dealing with this.

    Early on in your exploration of lithium batteries you were quite happy with Daly green BMS, so I decided that was the brand name and bought those I started building my batteries. But as you discovered with early BMS the low temperature sensor wasn't there. Finally when I was ordering my third 200 amp sensor from China I texted the girl and asked her how to get that BMS with a low temp sensor on it. And they answered me and they said add this to your order twice and that'll be $4 and will add the low temp sensor for you. So apparently it was always available but they just weren't offering it in their standard menu offering. You had to ask for it. So now I have three 200 amp batteries in my motorhome and if I ever mess up and let the battery compartment drop below freezing One battery will be saved while I might be destroying the other two. On a serious note I have temperature sensor in that compartment and regulate the temperature pretty carefully and the coldest I have been at was 28° in the compartment stayed at 38.
    Thanks for the work you do. I know it's how you earn your living and you do it well and you earn. it.

    Got my Dr Prepare 100Ah Batteries today. First thing I did was crack one open. There is a lot of wasted space in these cases. Mine didn't have a pinched wire but it did have the misplaced heat sensor and no cold temp sensor. There were also sloppy finger prints all over the bus bars. I'll clean these units up, move the heat sensor, install a cold sensor and repackage two of these into a Pelican Case for portable power. Thanks for the inside look at this Dr Pooper of a battery build.

    I couldn't find a tear down of the Renogy BlueTooth LiFePo4 100AH 12v battery, just the "Smart" version of it. Curious if it contains pouch or prismatic cells, anyone know? Also, highly looking forward to the 48v rack mount battery reviews, that's what I'm looking to buy next. Nice review as always!

    I got myself a 14,000wh lifepo4 battery bank, 48vdc from Treeline Power systems for 3300 dollars. It's got enough capacity to keep the inverter running over night. They sell a rack cabinet steel box to support 3 of these battery banks. Nice storage solution for reasonable cost.

    Thanks for opening the case on this unit. It looks like this is a classic example that your get what you pay for isn’t it? After seeing the temperature sensor configuration I’m guessing that this battery wouldn’t last very long because it didn’t have things wired correctly to protect itself from overheating or cold temps. Can you think of a time where this type of battery would be useful? Could a couple of them be used with a small pure sine wave inverter as a battery backup for a computer or printer that needs to stay operational like for security cameras?

    Server rack batteries are where it's at. So easy to scale with a nice rack cabinet with common + and -. All in one to top it off. I live in Canada and our Amazon deal right now is Ecoworthy (brand), would be nice if you could review the 100Ah model.

      For off-grid it's perfect. The question is where to draw the line between on and off grid, as its regulated by different approvals/agencies. Would be nice for this type of equipment to conform to municipal requirements.
