John Knox and The Scottish Covenanters

  • Since the Reformation in 1560, Scotland's national church had been Presbyterian. John Knox and his associates had completed the work of changing Scotland from Roman Catholicism to Protestantism. The Scots felt that their pure religion of Biblical worship and doctrine along with their liberty which had cost so much was worth fighting for.
The struggle for religious and civil liberties during the 1600's was not with Romanism, but with the Episcopalians of England. The British monarchy, which held both religious and civil authority tried to force its prayer book and church government of archbishops, bishops, deans and church laws upon the people of Scotland. When King Charles I and his successors endeavored to force the Scots to conform, is when the conflict became severe and even bloody. For over fifty years the Scots fought a long and bitter fight until 1688 when they succeeded in reestablishing Presbyterianism in Scotland.

All the reformers would roll in their graves to see the state of Protestantism today.

Our Presbyterian forefathers gave themselves wholeheartedly to and for King Jesus! May we also give ourselves wholly to Him and to His cause!

Every protestant in scotland should stand firm on the teachings of Knox, calvin and others, and abstain from any form of ecumenical movement he may appear as a grandad as some say but he was grandfather of our faith and we should be proud, and stand firm in his truth and Faith his teachings, that all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God and not just a protestant thing "Jesus Saves" Remember Knox & Calvin were both Catholics who saw the Light the blessed Gospel light !

Fascinating. Now we know what will be required of us in the future, if we desire to be called faithful and true by our Lord.

I am surprised that he did not mention how Knox was captured and had to serve on a french galley and all the while he prayed that one day he would return to Scotland and did. The other concern is the covenanters were fighting against Romanism. They clearly say the Anglican church being staffed with romanist sympathizing pastors and many felt that Charles II was a closet romanist himself.

John Knox is the greatest hero in all of Scottish history. He made Jesus Christ King of Scotland in 1560 in the Scots Confession of faith (6 Johns). Christ is our King of Scots (No King comes above our King Jesus Christ). Jesus Christ is King of Kings. God rest John Knox's soul in peace, in Christ's heavenly Kingdom eternally. (Our Kingdom God's Kingdom Scotland) God bless his soul Lord God + (1514-1572) RIP +

This is what I don't understand about Knox. In the early days of the Reformation, translation of the Bible into the native language was a major goal, even before Luther. But Knox used the English Geneva Bible. He never tried to have the Bible translated into Scots or into Gaelic. Major failing.

There was no united kingdom in 1560. You are thinking of the church of England, not the church of Scotland.

  • @locyfelix

Wild goose chase prior to the formal establishment of the Church of England in 1559. But by that time England realised that just the salvation words from the pulpit were not sufficient. True riches came through true conquests to obtain extra territories. First came the Union of the Crowns in 1603, and then the 1707 Act of Union, and also true military might was then recruited to support Britain, from her vast overseas empires and dominions.

It was in England, but not in Scotland. In fact, it would have been more politically expedient for the Scots to remain Catholic at that time, considering both their queen, Mary, and their oldest ally, France, were Catholic. And, the Reformation in Scotland actually began as early as the late 14th and early 15th centuries with the Lollards. The official establishment of the Reformation in 1560 was actually just the culmination of a movement that had been building for about 200 years.

yes it had been building for years , what I had read years ago was that martin luther only wanted reforms in the catholic church as he was fed up with the high taxes , what was going on in the church calling it a den of iniquity , and other reasons ,

I'm sorry, but this is a very poor piece indeed. The story of Knox is simply deficient, No mention of his French captivity, or his time as a Chaplain to Edward VI of England and his part in the writing of the English Prayer book. Nothing about the Book of Order of 1556. A deficient account of the Scottish Reformation. As an undergraduate essay this would hardly pass. It sells the Covenant far short and don't really give us much more than the romanticised view of the killing times. 3/10 Try hard

  • @swoosh50

No offense but the reason for reformation in the UK was more political than spiritual.

    • @bumpriderolling9158

It is intertwined for sure, since the church was the government and the government was the church.

It was spreading because more and more liked it , but there would be some politics about it as well , there was always more reasons than one for things to happen

Knox ruined Scottish culture. He burned books, beat people for singing their songs, and destroyed the Scottish dance culture. So many songs and stories have been lost forever due to his destructive speculation about a cold, selfish and angry God. He stole the wild soul of the Scottish people.
