Creating a Portrait with a Hot Metal Tool | Realistic Wood Burning Art

  • This fast-motion video shows a pyrography portrait by Minisa Robinson. It was woodburned by hand with the Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool wood-burner and the shading point. A touch of white colored pencil was added after the wood burning was finished for extra highlights. This portrait took me about 11 hours to woodburn and it is on an 8x10 inch piece of basswood.
The blue glove shown is a simple gardening glove from my hardware store. It helps protect my hand against accidental burns from creating pyrography and offers a low level of heat protection.
The gray bag that I rest my hand on is originally designed to provide wrist support while working at a computer. It is also helpful for supporting my wrist while woodburning.
The purple pad is a flexible sander to "erase" my guidelines and make them lighter before woodburning the lighter contours of the face.
Pyrography is also known as woodburning and uses a hot metal tool to burn onto a piece of wood, much like drawing with a pencil. I have been creating realistic pyrography since 2009 and mainly use the Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool for my pyrography.

This video is - a Master at work.
A cheap $25 wood burner + a single shading bit = Artwork worthy of a museum.
    Exceptional artistry.
    Love it.

So glad to see someone else does wood burning. It is a very tedious job and your work is amazing (especially dealing with the temperature and tips). Most people don't really know what it is but as soon as they see my work they want one. Thank you for sharing your gift

I absolutely LOVE your work! and with the Versa-Tool! I always thought i needed to "upgrade".... question if i may, did you do anything to the shading tip like sanding it down or anything? to make this come out very smooth looking? and the "shading" is really tons of tiny tiny lines, is that right? i'm in the process of practicing more and more and you are a wonderful influence! Thank you for your video
