    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    What's the sign at 28:28? The one where you put your thumb against your palm and twist? I know I've seen it before, but I forgot what it was.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому

      The sign at 28:28 is "impress / impressed / emphasize / emphasis" -- "As in "I'm impressed!" or "Impressive!"
      Tip: The above question "What is the sign at..." would be an excellent question to ask the Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group:
      facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/
      To join you have to read the rules and then answer a couple of questions but the vast majority of people get in.
      By joining the group you'll be able to get answers to basic "What's that sign?" type questions.

    for the sign FREEWAY, I notice that you signed it with your right hand closer to you, meaning that your little cars/bunny ears are "driving" on the left. does it actually matter which hand is closer? would you say that you usually sign it with your dominant hand closer? if so, do most other Deaf people also usually sign it that way too?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому +1

      Regarding the sign for "freeway" or "highway":
      Claiming what "most" other Deaf sign for "freeway" would be hyperbole due "freeway" being one of those signs that are not well documented in the literature and varies significantly from person to person.
      For what it is worth see this link and the 5 min 34 second mark of this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/QQNtvymasoE/v-deo.html
      and you'll note that he initializes "freeway" and does the cars "driving on the left side of the road." He is not European even though he is discussing driving in Germany -- that isn't the point -- it is his normal sign for freeway. He uses the same positioning in his initialized sign for "highway" at the 1 min 24 second mark of this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/bbru17dfwvM/v-deo.html
      However, to announce that there is one best or most right way to sign "highway" would be arrogant in light of the amount of variation existing in that sign.
      For example, see this version:
      media.spreadthesign.com/video/mp4/13/73027.mp4
      Here is a version of the sign for freeway or highway that is pretty solid:
      ua-cam.com/video/7Fe_qG-QZF0/v-deo.html
      When done at high speed, in conversation you will often see more of bunny ears flapping movement simply because it is faster to flap the ears rather than to move both arms.
      For an example of that version see the 2 minute mark of this video: ua-cam.com/video/mNF1kg9azQw/v-deo.html

      well, that was a way more complicated answer than I was expecting! thank you [=
      on the subject of sign duo, do you have a write-up anywhere about your opinions/observations about the relationship between ASL and SEE, PSE, etc., or about views in the Deaf community about those kinds of systems? I forget what exactly Ryan calls the signing system he uses, but he doesn't seem to consider it to be ASL proper
