I just love your Dune series. The most fascinating thing about them is that the first novel is something of a classic hero saga, but when you get into the rest of the books, you realize that the message is almost the opposite. They're definitely some of the best books ever written.

Wow! Is that a real interview of Frank Herbert at the end? Dune is one of my favorite series (along with ASOIAF) but still, I had never heard him talk. This seems so interesting!!!
Henrik G he both hated and admired the Jews, he portrays Judaism rites mostly accurately weirdly enough is the only religion that stays the same when it had changes like karaite Judaism being the closet to prediaspora beliefs, however in chapter house Rebecca a Jewish woman joins the bene geserit and she says that the teachings of that religion were stupid. He also said to have based the sardukar on Zionist militias and commandos and making the Fremen victims and heroes when the Israeli Arabic conflict doesn't have heroes and villains. My father was raised as a Jew before he converted to catolicism to marry my mom, so it's a bit hard to see those things when I'm reading it's like they are insulting people from my family but I can enjoy dune for all it's nuances I also have the same feeling with lovecraft even though I'm not black.
Just stumbled onto this series. So cool! Thanks the artwork is inspiring.

I'm pretty sure the Noships did not contain Nochambers, but were a huge nochamber in their entirety. The ships themselves were stealthy, hiding from detection by prescience or otherwise. Also the Guild's monopoly was space travel not spice. Spice monopoly was Arrakis deal.
One of the most interesting things about this series is the difference between the original novels, and the ones that were written later, by Frank Herbert's son and a co-author. I don't want to be rude-thought I'd try something new lmao- but it's the difference between art and a napkin doodle. As soon as you start discussing the "secondary" novels, it starts sounding like a bunch of clever fanboys started fanboying.
Love what you are doing... Thank you.. Also I see why Frank Herbert passed before he could finish his books.. He had a following like no other at that time.. and still does.. this is like Oz behind the curtain .. but on a much deeper level.. “Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.”
At 4:00 you used a picture from Battletech. Technically that takes place during the Jihad of the mechanical-worshiping Word of Blake, the crazies who broke off from Comstar. Not mad or anything, but it was jarring to have the Dune and Battletech universes cross for a second like that lol
I don't agree with you at all, and yet you are so sure of yourself. I wonder why you're acting so much the snob?I've been reading Dune books since I first ordered Dune in hardback from the Science Fiction Book Club in 1969. I even studied it in an upper level English class in college, So I feel qualified to offer my opinion on this subject. I don't consider Kevin J Anderson a hack and I appreciate what he's done in extending the Dune Universe. No, he's not Frank Herbert, no one is, but calling him a shitty writer, that's bogus. I think you don't know what you're talking about.

Nice explanation of that timeline. I loved those books. The Dune encyclopedia was really wonderful too. BTW, Frank Herbert died in a hospital where I lived in Madison WI. A friend of mine who was a nurse who took care of him. She didn't know who he was until after he died.
@@stardappledgreen A good 3rd movie can't make two awful previous one's good. There's no compensating for a faulty foundation. That said I'll be genuinely impressed if they manage to make the rise of Skywalker into a decent movie on it's own.
There are two mistakes here. The Ixians devised ways to travel long distanes which broke the Guild monopoly on space travel, while the Bene Tlialax broke the Spice monoploy of Dune/Arrakis/Rakis. Edit: rather than a mistake, I see it as something that might be misunderstood, just trying to clear things up! Keep it up IdeasOfIceAndFire !
I lkve warhammer 40k with a passion...but it truly devastates me to think that 40ks creators had read dune (and at the time im guessing few other people had done) and they just rewrote dune so that they could have aliens to fight
Some of this is wrong. IX is ruled by a religious fanatic, from the early Jihad, that has moved from body to body, through it all. He was an ally to the titans. I may be mistaken, but he was responsible for fooling the computers, and causing a schism within the programming, so that there was more than one computer mind. Being able to fool the computers was his first trick. This is how he helped the Titans. The one titan had to conquer IX, in order to make contact, and make a show of putting down part of a rebellion. Being sent there was the only way to go there, without tipping off the computers. Having the "Mahdi" show up was a big deal for IX, and he gave the clone of Duncan Idaho to the Emperor's family as a gift. Sometimes a copy of the original shows up, and may destroy himself completely rather than stay. Often, when doing so, he wants to deal with them in a completely honest manner, and not through an intermediary. So, sometimes it's the real man - or as real as can be presented - who doesn't want any doubts, or is curious, usually for religious reasons, like "Is Paul the Mahdi", etc.. Sometimes he likes to get to know people personally, and memories are transferable. It's been a while since I read these books though.
Hey, I am about to dive into the first Dune book so I will binge watch all of these videos really soon. But first I have to finish Anailation from the southern reach trilogy. I was hoping you could cover those books in a video because its pretty insane and I think it would make a good video. Also, I need a little help understanding the book.
Manny Song yes,but whereas the ad-mec gently prods the creative process to be sure they don’t make heretekical technology, the ixian’s roughly stab the creative process with a spear.
I love the lore, but I had such a rough time with the extended universe. Brian lacks his father's subtlety, and characters mostly just seem to say what they're thinking
Is that "self improving hunter-seeker" plot part of the original series? I don't remember having reading about it, it sounds relatively simplistic, considering the rest of the stories, that the Golden Path was just to stop IX from creating one machine, besides, I'm sure the idea as Leto said was to stop humankind from stagnation and eventual extinction.
I just subscribed to your series of videos due to my love of the Dune series. I want to say excellent work. I do have one concern. I have read the Butlarian Jihad series and was wondering on your opinion of it. Through some of the videos I have watched you say that people do not consider it cannon. What is your opinion on it. In terms of technological progression and culture, the Ixians are the most accurate depiction of a future humanity in the Dune series. The great houses are limited by religious dogma but the Ixians were allowed to fluoridh, continuing our previous rate of development.

Interesting enough in its own right - and enjoyable as such - but little more than "fan fiction" at best. I feel the same about the Dune Encyclopedia. Some things are best left unexplained.
