- I try A ringfield motor upgrade kit on a Hornby APT model.
I set out with this video to conduct a simple clean and oil to improve the running of this 1980's APT, however I soon found the armature to have seen better days. I was aware of the replacement kits so I thought Id give one ago.
I was quite impressed really....

What a difference the new motor has made to the performance of the train. Don't think the new motor effects from the value of the train set - after all you want something that actually works. I think you have done the right thing in fixing the new motor and resulting in such a wonderful performance. I must say Matt I do love you videos and look forward when they come along and the variety of topics you choose to show us! Great Stuff. Regards Malcolm
Thank you malcom, that makes it all worthwhile, when I only get a few views, I sit and wonder if its me, the subject or just the you tube algorithm, however to get messages of support show it really doesn't matter. Thank you!
Did the same thing with my old apt plus converted it to Dcc then added the lights to the end cars gave it a new lease if life,I do have the new one as well nice to seeing them both run.
Lights is a good Idea, maybe I will do that next. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Nice job love that set cd motors are a great idea 👍
Next step is to try and print my own adaptor. Thanks
The noise was due to the bearings of the armature not being clean and lubed. Background whining is the gears needing cleaning out then some oil and grease. These CD motor conversions have good results but I only use them in worse case scenarios (buggered armatures, frames or magnets)
They do take away from the value of the model really but I suppose you could easily change it back. I’d recommend a complete strip down, bath and clean everything you can. File the gears flat as the flashing makes noise, commutator cleaned using a copper polish and then very good greasing and it would be fine.
Nice to see it running smoothly
Regards
Will
Thanks for the advice will, I will take a look at the flashing, that's a good point. Thanks for watching at taking the time to comment.
@@dustyshelfcollectables i usually find that once the noise of the bearings is gone, the noise is just a rattle. If you hear anything with yours it'll be flashing or lack of grease. Whether it be an X04 worm or Dublo, or any ringfield gears - grease will silence any rattles. Just a few small things can transform any loco.
Good luck with the filing

Hi Matt.
Good job, well done!
Although I've never come into contact with one myself, the replacement looks as though it's a CD motor which are become more popular these days as a replacement for (especially) Lima ringfield/pancake motors.
Paul. 👍
Hi paul, Certainly seams good, the motor is only 6v so would need a resistor if running at full power or digital.
Hi, great video on your motor upgrade, did you clean out the old housing and gearing, I didn’t see you oil the gearing or the wheel bearings, this would make it running even more smoothly and add longevity to this motor, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much, I actually over oiled off camera and ended up spending time cleaning off the wheels as they were slipping. The squeaking you may hear on the video is the tilt 'bearing surface' where the plastic is old, I did use a little grease here but still couldn't stop all the noise. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@dustyshelfcollectables If you watch 00Bill he always gives his plastic gears in these ringfield motors a light sand flat on fine emery paper. I assume with time plastic edges spread a little. and it takes some burr off.
Hi Matt, I went with the apt-e from Rapido … haven’t opened it yet, I’m saving it for my 60th in a months time. All the best !!
I would love the rapido model, looks fantastic. Enjoy, when you finally get it open. and Birthday regards in advance!
@@dustyshelfcollectables thank you 🙏 You can pick it up for around £300 … which I feel is an absolute bargain for what it is … I remember seeing it on Tomorrows World as a kid and being blown away …
Nice work.
What exactly is the replacement motor called and where can you buy them?
A link would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Mon from Monsville Railways
I got mine form ebay, there are quite a few listed on there, If I am allowed to post the link its www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295274244179
If not search for Hornby Ringfield Motor Upgrade Kit (Bo-Bo & Co-Co) but do note this on is a 6V motor and if you are running digital or at full power you will need to step the voltage down with a resistor.
Thank you.
Sadly, they won't send to Australia. 😕
@@dustyshelfcollectables Interesting it is a 6 V motor. The original train ran with 2 motor coaches and 6 coaches either side . I've got several sets of varying repair and I want to make two sets into one and convert two end coaches into maybe restaurant - see if I can make the corridor connection end by casting in resin or something. I could use two of these motors in series or parallel and have a power connection between them. Mind you, I've been saying this for over 15 years.....
Seems quite urgent. Was it a 6V or 12V can motor in this kit?
I really can not remember, however I was and have been running it successfully on a 12v HM controller, thanks for watching.
Why don't manufacturers consider more modern motors like conversion kits like this one in the first place during manufacturing?
Good question, thanks for watching.
