Just picked up one of these and getting started on it . New to bikes and vintage. Was going clean it up and get it running good, and flip it for some money but I'm getting attached to this bike and the timing of your awesome videos making me think about keeping it ! God bless !
@@Garage2Trailwhew if we were closer I’d love for you to do a stock head to head on mine but alas, I’m out in the west cost, have both too. The Mx top end looks like it adds a lot of spice. Stock I find the 175 pretty four stroke with a linear power band; good low end and a mild hit when on the pipe
It's like a detective movie trying to figure out what's wrong. These riding videos make me nervous. It feels like I'm riding on the back of the bike, which is something I hate. But a fun video all the same and a cool bike with lots (too much?) of power for woods riding. 🙂👍
I think i said coils last vid as i assumed you must have new points as you would recomision this type of bike ie new oils battery plugs points, its always poits go before plugs, i remember back in the day cleaning points as a regular thing, dont forget the worn crank seals start to loose power when engines hot similar to your symptoms, my first bike was one of these in the blue turquoise colour and 125cc same exhaust the sound brings it all back i used to ride in the woods to fond memories, keep up the good work.
Great work on that bike. Sure it won't be a like modern GasGas, but it's a thrill to make a 50-yr old bike run as sweetly at yours, will run away from the pack at vintage races.
I really enjoyed the video but looks like it’s a handful lol. Some Barnett clutch springs or maybe even MX 175 clutch springs might be a little stiffer. Really looking forward to the shoot out with the Suzuki 185 but my money is on the Yamaha. Look forward to your next video
If the springs are in spec and the frictions are new, try tweaking the adjustments a little tighter a little at a time. The book specs are for all new parts, sometimes a little tweak on the adjustments is all it takes to get things settled in together. A little on the pushrod and readjust the cable may be all it needs.
Old vintage dirt/enduro motorcycles were the best looking. Today's new bikes have too much plastic including that water cooled plastic panel that sticks out to the side next to the fuel tank.
I’m not gonna lie the difference in the way the power appears to be delivered is pretty awesome between a stock head and piston and a Mx setup. Are the cylinder ports different as well?
I’m a former mountain bike rider. Too old to be cranking through the woods. I’d like a trail bike just to get around in the woods nothing crazy. Can you recommend any older bike that might fit my needs. Im a fair mechanic and not afraid to work on something.
You should try to find an XR200! Perfect low maintenance, low seat height quiet, reliable woods bike that’s easy to ride yet had enough power for more than just basic trail riding.
Can’t go wrong with a Yamaha! The enduros I’m the 70s were perfected by Yamaha in my opinion. I love my Hondas but Yamaha had them in the dual purpose bikes department in the early days (2-strokes).

It took some getting used to for sure. Different power delivery but man, when you need instant power it’s there!

I Have Had Several DT 175's Over My Lifetime, They Are Great Bikes. Plenty Of Power For This Type Of Riding.
This one might be more fun than my DT250s back here

Once the clutch is sorted how about testing it on your loop? Seems it has plenty of power.
I may try some of it if I get good tires on. Ground clearance may be an issue though too. I’d feel bad beating on this too bad!

Yeah the MX cylinder and piston has more ports on it Vs the regular CT. Probably what give it at motocross type power delivery.
Oh, I see I wasn’t sure if you just had an MX piston and head in it or a whole top and I’m sure you said it but you know I’m kind of dense
The bars aren't bent. They were like that from the factory. Had two all original models in the family...71 and 73.

Which carburetor rubber coupler(reed to carb) are you using?
Same one that would have been on the 175MX as far as I know.
do you have the clutch push rod adjustment set correctly? (i assume they are similar to dt250?)
