Ok so this is the first time I have ever heard of this person. After this interview I love him. I just jumped on amazon and ordered his book. I can't wait to read it.

"Ascension, not necessarily as something that sends you upward, but anything that moves you from the place you were to the place you're going. And sometimes that place, geographically is the same, but is emotionally different. Is mentally different." 💎

What a fantastic interview! I've been lucky to have been in Hanif's orbit for many years now and it's awesome to see how far he's come since the first time my jaw dropped seeing him recite a poem at the 2014 National Poetry Slam. This was also my first time even hearing of Michael Kosta and he really made a slam dunk with Hanif here!

I read Hanif’s book on A Tribe Called Quest and it was great. We also wrote for the same online publication at the same time. Congrats on your success Hanif!

0:58 I had never heard of the book or the author. This I was unexpected and just engaging. I can’t wait to get this book. From the interview I think it will be useful for myself but also as a way to engage with my friends and children.

Where does this guy get off being a pro athlete AND a fantastic author? Don't even get me started about this whole thing with being interesting when you talk.
"Nostalgia is an endless hustler"... I just enjoyed this phrase so much. If I had a higher tolerance for pain I'd get it as a tattoo.

Fantastic interview and really thoughtful perspectives. That bit about Hanif's Mom and her kindness being the symbol of her legacy is beautiful. I will be picking this book up today, along with Citizen Illegal by Jose Olivarez.

I'd like to make the argument that well sure basketball and whatever iteration but really like it is such a pleasure to be in an African American community like to have that opportunity to be around oh hey there this is how nice it to be here and to know years later the layers the warmth of that.

We are all certainly going to die, but we are not dead yet. And so, since we are not dead yet, have you ever considered the sunset? (And you haven't really considered the sunset because there are infinite sunsets on infinite days as long as you're alive.) - Hanif Abdurraqib
