Siding and roof for my SIGNAL BOX

- A few months ago I installed my signal box in the garden. This was necessary to finish paving the walkway. Since then the metal box was outside in the elements, it´s only protection was a tarp. Today it is time to change that! I am installing nice wooden siding all around my signal box and build a roof for it as well. The result looks stunning and should preserve the metal box from rusting any time soon!

This is ridiculous! And this is just the signal box. Wow ✊✊🎯
I´m glad you like it! Maybe it´s ridiculous but it is a lot of fun too :)
We live watching your videos. My husband has been collecting his G trains and track for several years. Hopefully he will begin his garden layout toward the end of this year. He can’t wait. Wished you lived closer to us. lol. You’re a worker !! Great job! Also any tips are appreciated. He’s thinking of putting his track directly on the ground. Now considering the gravel as well. Thank you. be well!!
Hi, good to hear that both of you are enjoying my videos! Your husband has choosen a great hobby. You can start your layout by laying the track directely on the ground. This way it is easy to change and you can get a good feeling what you like and what you don´t like about your track plan. You will find that a lot of weeds will grow through your track over time which will cause some problems later on. At that stage you should have found your desired track plan and start installing the tracks with some sort of underlayment. As you have seen I use gravel but some guys tend to use concrete pavers or other weed barriers. Use as big of a curve radius as your sapce allows, that is very important not only for curves but also for switches! Don´t use more than 4% gradient, if possible less and change the fish plate track connectors with some sort of screwing connector for a seemless power supply. But the most important thing is to have fun with whatever you´ve got. Start small and make it work so that you can operate your trains quickly, then grow your layout. I wish you all the best for your up comming layout! Greetings from Germany!
ohh I love your dad.. may he live long
Thanks, I hope so too...
Krass gut.
It’s really impressive to watch you do literally anything involving carpentry and more. All you work is perfection. Makes me wish you were doing this for me. :)
Thank you! I try my best to do it right the first time even if it takes a little longer. So far it pays off!
@@summitrailway I can tell. The way you look at things, it’s like you can see 10 steps ahead. There is such a vast variety of skills you have it really amazes me. Not to mention cute.
The siding really finishes up the signal box nicely. Helps it blend in to the landscape.
Thats true. The wood will change it´s color due to weathering, then it will blend in even better.
My husband loves model trains! He found your channel this weekend and to my dismay, we have been watching for two days! 😅. Seriously, we are enjoying your videos thoroughly. Hard work! By the way, we’re watching from New Port Richey Florida, US.
Hey! Thank you for your comment! I am glad that both of you seem to enjoy my videos. There is a lot more in store for you. Greetings form Germany!
I’m enjoying this project thanks for sharing your journey. Nice craftsmanship!!
Thank you, I appreciate it! The journey has just begun...
Really nice work. Seeing the way you do this so quickly makes the idea of doing it less daunting, and achievable. Good plans and then just do it. ;-) Thanks!
Preperation and planning takes a lot of time but if all materials are on site and you have a rough plan of action then the work is quickly done!
I have watched all your videos and have enjoyed them a lot and look forward to the continuation on your garden railway.
I'm building a N gauge layout and wish I had your layout and love the track joiners our using.
Hi, I am glad that you are enjoying my videos. Work will continue soon, right now I need some set up time for all the materials and so on.
Nice handy work with a fantastic result. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪.
Thank you!
Look great. Nice craftsmanship. Look forward to the next phase of construction.
Thank´s!
Nicely Done!!
gute arbeit meiner weiter so gern ein paar längere vids
Danke für das Lob!
something look to me strange but maybe you don't need. Is a way for ventilation. Electric circuit need fresh air. I think you need some open space at the top and the ground of the box or other place. sry for my bad english xD
You are right, ventilation is very important. Since the door of the signal box will be always open when it´s in use it should have more than enough ventilation. Ther won´t be any heat emitting electronics like transformers inside the box either. So I think im good.
Is that pressure treated lumber. Will that not rot? Otherwise. The craftsman ship is very nice. Impressed with your hard work. Enjoying the video
Hi! I am using Larch wood which is very rot resistant by itself as long as it is not constantly in wet or damp conditions. That´s not the case here so I should be fine for at least 15 to 20 years. I am glad you enjoy my content!
Nice work . trying to get up enough courage to try one for myself ..
I´d love to inspire you to build your own layout. Start small and work your way up. The most important ingredient to have fun with a garden railroad are some friends that share the passion. Without them I wouldn´t be doing this right now.
Hey Robert, I understand every word you said but I switch to German language.
Was den Rost & Wetterschutz betrifft endlich Abschließen konntest. Hast wieder sehr ordentliche Arbeit geleistet Spitzenmäßig 👍🏻😊
Wo hast du eigentlich den Metallschrank her?
Schönen Sonntag.
LG Dominik
Moin! Aufgrund der Größe wusste keiner so genau was man damit machen soll.
Ja so was wäre für mich auch was!
The railway will be controlled via DCC. I will use the Massoth DIMAX central station. I did a video about this some while ago. ua-cam.com/video/S53e_4mRexk/v-deo.html
Do you get a lot of snow where you are? If so do you run your trains?
We do get some snow (10-20cm) in my area. I really enjoy running the trains in snow conditions!
Good work! Are you going to paint it?
Thank´s. There will be no paint since this wood is weather resistant for many years and I like the natural look.
Sounds good. I will look forward to seeing your future posts.
hi what country are you from
Germany
Do you work in construction or renovation? You seem to know how to use tools. Do you like being a handyman?
Hi! I learned most of my skills from my dad and the two grand dad´s. Since I was a little boy we have had constantly some project going on reaching from underground utility to rebuilding our home, paving our driveway and so on. I also joined a apprenticeship several years ago in which they taught me metal and plastic craftsmanship. So I do have a brought variety of basic skills on hand.
