You won’t find any wild axolotls up at surface level… they usually live in water-filled cave systems. They really don’t like much light, and they also need brackish water to thrive, so you’d need to find a cave system that has salt+fresh water mixing

Heard from my father who went there last week, he got told that invasive species like tilapia and catfish are a huge problem in the lakes, combine that with contamination and we get a very low chance of seeing one in the wild.
Just fyi, almost all of the ones bred for the pet trade are hybrids of tiger salamanders and axolotls and cannot be released back into their native habitats or any other habitat to boost the population
Domestic axolotls are different from wil ones though and can never be released. Most captive axolotls were originally used for some science stuff which gave them differing colors and genetics if I remember correctly
Wild axolotl are very very rare, there used to be tons, but they lived in the lake that is now Mexico City. The old city was built on artificial islands in the center of the lake, and was designed to integrate it into daily life. The Spanish destroyed this lake, and its entire ecosystem, which is why there are so many landslides and sinkholes today.
Axolotls only exist in lake Xochimilco. You may have seen a similar species. In the U.S., we have mud puppies and a few other species that are very similar to, but not the same as an axolotl. Alternatively, you saw some salamanders that hadn't morphed yet.

Yeah you’re not going to find a wild axolotl. Axolotls are just a mid stage of a salamanders development and they only stay axolotls if they’re kept in the perfect condition. But in the wild, the stress would cause them to metamorphose into a salamander.
Honestly Xochimilco was full of them, not the pink ones, the browns, but with tourism growing and pouching they're going extinct, and is going extinct and is super sad. As Mexican is super sad seeing our wildlife seeing such fate all the time.
