  • randin draws on newly declassified documents and on Kissinger’s writings to show that the former Secretary of State has been the pivotal influence in determining how the U.S. understands its role in the world. Grandin traces our recent military actions, for instance, back to Kissinger’s belief that past mistakes should not inhibit bold new actions.

I see Lou Wolf in attendance, co-publisher of Covert Action Information Bulletin - arguably the greatest news magazine ever published. Much respect owed to him.

I swear I saw a photo of one of the Bushes (W or Jeb) loading cocaine onto a plane in Florida - in one of the CAIB issues!! Have you seen that? I can't find it. thanks

Haven't read much Covert action but I hear Chomsky cite it fairly frequently. Also thanks for all your quality uploads. :)

Actually Daniel Hopsicker says that Barry Seal had a video of the Bushes loading cocaine onto a plane in Florida. So I wonder if the photo I saw in Covert Action Info Bulletin was a still from that video? Strange. I swear I saw it. Early 90s - in D.C. bookstore.

I like Grandin's approach to history; it is somewhat detached as I think it needs to be.

To the woman making the last comment......Grandin was not defending the justifications used by both Kissinger and Obama - he was stating them. Her criticism is directed at the wrong party.

Too busy listening to her own voice to listen to what was being said. If she had bothered to read the book it may have helped her understand

@@evelynsouzaferreira4593 I'm just finishing the book now. Always good to read the book first.

Grandin's book "The Last Colonial Massacre", which is about Guatemala, is excellent. I recommend it highly to those who want to know exactly the sort of oppressive, racist serfdom the US helped to keep in place in Central America during the Cold War (and today).

Yep, he's one of the best. I first found him through Democracy Now I think? when his book Fordlandia came out discussing Henry Ford's attempt to make a rubber plantation and little Protestant America in the Amazon.

Wow I don’t know how I will ever catch up learning about all the atrocities our government has done in our country’s name.

Greg Grandin is an amazing and essential historian. His critique of Hitchens is refreshing. I read Trial years ago and couldn't get passed the self-importance and moralism - much like his book on Clinton There's No one Left to Lie To. Self-righteous moralism is easier than systemic criticism.

Systemic criticism is far more important anyways. Kissinger was naturally a symptom of a bigger problem - a large state bent on implementing imperialist policies to serve its own geopolitical and economic interest.

Greg Grandin is the same guy who wrote that, "the biggest problem Venezuela faced during his rule was not that Chávez was authoritarian but that he wasn’t authoritarian enough." It wasn’t too much control that was the problem but too little," and added that Venezuela, "might be called the most democratic country in the Western Hemisphere." He talks endlessly of the deep animosity of Latin Americans toward the United States and its Imperialism, yet it seems odd that with all that animosity they'd want to come here by the tens of thousands.

A good and very informative book - the footnotes good to read, the appendices not for my nerves, hehe.Grandin is fairly objective.
In this case, the lack of photographs gives the book more value.

Yes, the final questioner was quite right. She really is non-brilliant.
