I drove and commanded a PASI in Bosnia and Kosovo, older XA-180 variants in both missions. Guys in my company said that there had been an incident where Macedonian police complained angrily that their radar had clocked a PASI driving 120km/h at 80km/h restricted road. The Logistics Officer just told them that PASI doesn't go that fast and closed the phone.

Hehehe thats cool :D I've been inside of PASI's many times when i was in the army 2009, they are really cool but when going offroad maaan you bounce inside like a damn superball hahah :D I think thats the reason i loved them so much :D And i was used to bouncy rides since i was a panzerjäger (dont know the english version of the company, but mechanized infantry could be closest or the actual term) and we had the CV90 which is an assault "tank" that fits the crew and was it 8 people inside :) That thing when going high speed offroad bounces like hell, and its fucking fun hahaha :D

Basically every time the Finnish military shows its equipment, you can queue up for a ride with one of these.
Love the “public property” factor to that. Used to be similar in Oz. Open days at barracks was a great day out.
And as the video explains, the ride will be a boring, fairlt uncomfortable experience. Totally worth it though. Love these things.
As I remember, that after they had hit land mine, they drove the PASI back to base, limping and slowly, but still back to base.
PASI is a beast, used by many different countries.
The futuristic looking one was the new vehicle to replace PASI, it's called Patria AMV, its considered one of the best armored personnel carriers in the world atm and it can be equipped with different modules like double barrel mortar, 120mm cannon or remote machinegun turret. Weirdly foreign countries have bought more of them than Finland itself, maybe we are waiting till the PASIs rust away :D
AMV isn't exactly PASI's replacement. As far as I know, the replacement for PASI is only now being considered. AMV, especially the upgraded model (AMV XP), might actually be closer to an IFV than an APC. That's why you see AMV so often with quite heavy looking weaponry. Regardless, PASI is by now outdated, so it should be replaced, but the new vehicle won't be quite as mean as AMV, nor as expensive. In the video we also saw Patria's new 6x6, which has some of the same external looks as the old PASI, but otherwise it's based more on the AMV technology.

Well I was just last year in military service at motorized infantry company that used Patria AMV:s. It's a great vehicle, we used them to support our attacks, but were always told to keep them at back so they wouldn't get destroyed. After all 50cal is is no match for something like 30mm autocannon and although the armour could stand few hits, the vehicles were mainly our tiket to ride in and out of combat. So they were mainly used as APC:s supporting us with those thermal sighted remote controlled mg:s. And as disclaimer I must say that unlike PASI our AMV:s were always more or less broken somehow, thought that can be partly blamed by long storageing before our service. Air conditioning and phone chargers at the back where nice tho.

Poland is license producing Partia AMVs as KTO Rosomak in big numbers. We are happy we got them.

Guy from our section became Pasi driver... guy was 201cm, pretty tall guy. He said he fit well, that he had no problems on driver's seat.
Im 207cm and i drove a CV9040.
When you are young and agile anything is possible.
The night vision sucked though as it was 20cm lower than the glas prism it replaced

In 1994 I was an UNPROFOR ambulance driver, driving a Mercedes G ambulance in the civil war... We were jealous of the PASI ambulances which were part of the NordBat contingent. Huge awesome roomy beefy vehicles!

I became very familiar with Pasi during reserve officer school. I developed a pretty strong reflex to fall asleep quickly after boarding a Pasi, as those were typically the precious few moments to get some sleep. It was somewhat challenging to drive a diesel vehicle for several years after service, because I'd get seriously drowsy in about fifteen minutes of listening to that sweet diesel murmur.
Can relate, i used to love sleeping at CV90 :) The little vibration and the sounds of the radio chatter + the little bouncing around with the engine going was so damn relaxing, its weird but thats literally the best place to sleep :D One time my "group" didnt wake me up while dismounting and i woke up inside the back and everyone was gone :D So i just hang there and listen to the radio chatter of the commander, driver and gunner :D Damn my superior was mad hahaha xD
It really is amazing what good naps you could take in the back of pasi with that loud engine and bumpy ride. Amazing nobody got a concussion in there
oh yeah.. a diesel in idle is like cat purr.. soothing... whispering all will be ok...

I think the best thing about PASI is the longevity. Not just for the user reasons, but because the silhouette has become so known all-around the world. Generation after another have learned that this vehicle is not an attack vehicle. That itself can be a very useful legacy when used in dodgy areas, trying to connect with the people. "Oh, it's just a PASI"

As a commander of one of these the part where he goes "swimming equipment" really takes me back to some of the most fun military training i ever had. Roughly translated we had "quick deeps" where the shore would go from 20 degrees to 100 degrees decline and as your face is about to hit the water the goddamn 14 ton sled just starts to float.

The instructions were that driving into the water should have been done slowly. Anyway once we were training, our instructor shouted to me over the intercom "Let's show how the Finnish Army drives into the lake! Rev up! Rev up!" and there I drove it into lake full throttle. That was some great fun - like driving with a XA-180 always was.
Swedish Army used the Pasi or as we call it the "SISU" since the 80's. Mainly used in UN missions but later implemented in Sweden as well as part of the military fleet. I've been using the PASI since my first UN mission in Lebanon in 1987 and later when back in the Swedish armed forces in Bosnia and Macedonia.
It's a great vehicle for the time and the upgraded versions are filling a great function.
I've used it or been in it during live fire, I have had friends that hit mines with them and they stood the test.
04:45 The KP vehicle was used by the Swedish UN troops in Congo in 1960-1964 and it was a disaster in many ways, that is what a former veteran with 3 tours in Congo told me. You had an open top on it and they had to learn the hard way that hand grenades could be lobbed into it, they solved it with netting and if I'm correct they later made a model that was enclosed.
They used to have one at the Swedish ( SWEDINT ) in Almnäs Sweden for showcase were they did train troops going on UN missions ( now in Kungsängen ). This vehicle was developed in Sweden in 1941 during WW2 and I bet the German halftrack Sd.Kfz. 251 had something to do with the looks of it.
It was the first Swedish APC ever made.

We used to do some stupid sh!t in Bosnia with our Pasi. We called them SISU so what we did now and then was what we called "SISU surfing" but as soon as HQ found out anyone caught doing that got sent home and would never again come on a UN mission.

Well basically You got up from gunner position, played Beach Boys in the Intercom, took the "surfing pose" on the roof and then "surfed" into a village or something like that.
When they found out about this at HQ it was an automatic "Scacyp" out of the country. Scacyp is the word used for being sent home and it would also mean hefty fines.
I do have some pictures of a "Sisu surf" in my basement and I might see if I can find it and maybe upload it here.

Patria was my battle taxi for a while. ( Royal Dutch Army).
I drove PASI in army and peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. It manages quite easily over 100km/h on road. We took PASI for a swim in training and that was quite interesting because it swims very deep, only about half metre stays above water. Steering is done with wheels and hydraulic propellers and speed in water is 10km/h if I remember right. In Kosovo we had one mission in camp near mount goles (can’t remember camp name) where we drove PASI in JOUHA (riot controll drill) and after the drill American general came to us asked if he can take a look of vehicle and he told us it’s amazing vehicle and they had nothing like that.
The best sleep I've ever had was in the back of a xa-180 in Kosovo during the riots 2004.
The us still use a similar german vehicle for NBC detection and analys, rare vehicle.

Pasi driver/commander here. I drove a 180M, which are modified from the original i think around 2015. These things are so fun to drive especially off-roading with full throttle. I almost shat myself the first time i went swimming with these since at first almost the whole windshield goes under water before it bounces up to the surface. Good times 2/19 vyks pionj
There was slightly funny incident in Lebanon 1990s involving IDF Tankers and Finnish UN troops with Pasi!
oh yeah I think I know what you are talking about. Find that video if you can. Wasn't it the one where Pasis were used to slow down IDF tanks. Well they did try to stop them I think but light weight is no match for heavy weight, but they tried and I loved that part where commander was asking asking driver "ready for another go?" (to stand on top of brake pedal xP )
Back when I was in FDF they asked if anyone wanted to be a Pasi crew member. Nobody wanted to be one. They told us that a Pasi crew member would have a lot of free time and suddenly they had more than enough volunteers. They were not laying. It seemed like the guys in Pasi training were contantly hanging out at the barracks with their training done for the day.
These Finnish Sisu/Pasi/Patria armored cars are great. We in the Swedish armed forces use them to. Now in three models; Patgb 180, 203 and 360 (Patgb is shortening of pansarterrängbil, wich means armored terrain car).

I thought the upper speed limit for the Pasi was 100km/h, but few years ago while driving on Finnish highway I drove about 120 km/h (max legal limit) and spotted in rear window something catching me up. Being a nice guy I pulled to the right line and it was Swedish Pasi which passed me like I was standing by. Saw the small Swedish flag ripping in the air on antenna or was it on small flag pole etc. Anyway, as impressed as I was of the speed, I was of APC commander who saluted me for giving room to pass by standing from the roof hatch. Must have been quite a windy spot 😁
The thing called "Musti" is a bazooka, capable of piercing almost any modern armor. I was the last conscription group that was still forced to the drag that 140kg beast through the Finnish forest. Nowadays it is mostly mounted on vehicles. The sound and the shockwave is incredible, feels like a hit in the head witha shovel. The danger zone reaches about 50m behind the bazooka.
@thetimekillerx yeah obviously not frontal armor. Basically if you shoot frontal armor, you are dead anyway....Practical, definitely not but man it was a manly beast 😀

To add as I understand there only existed a prototype AMOS PASI done and used as part of AMOS turret development. It was deemed, that PASI was too light weight and too light sprung vehicle to provide stable enough firing platform and they instead developed/chose to use the 8x8 Patria AMV as platform for production use.
There is some AMOS development and marketing videos on youtube, where the PASI AMOS can be seen firing and it bounces pretty hard on the recoil.
I saw the almost new Pasi in Uudenmaan Prikaati in Dragsvik in Finland 1984-1985. We drove around the Pasi in the terrain and in the water. Suddenly water came in at the back doors, so we went up on land and cleaned the rubber seals for the doors a second time. New try... and same thing! Water came in again. The officers shouted to us that we did a bad job cleaning the rubber door seals, but then we noticed that the frame between the doors had CRACKED at the bottom. THAT made everybody worried. No water passes anymore. All vehicles was checked and the manufacturer came very fast to the scene to check the fault. Have now seen newer models. They are reinforced at that spot today.
If i remember right IT was that particular Pasi which took The landmine hit that was shipped back to Finland and to Niinisalo where i served at 1989.
We were marched to look at it (IT wasnt repared) and our officer gave us a speech telling " Every single equipment you use IS designed to save you..take good care of it for that. This vehicle saved its crew"
Those uncomfortable looking seats fold down and are very comfortable. Also I was part of the new Patria AMV marketing video, that thing was a beast.
The translation seemed to also skip the fact that they provide shock absorption in case something happens.
Yeah I can imagine those being more comfortable than the old system where you had to bend your upper body and especially neck forwards when you sat down.
In early 2000´s I took a hit from a signal corps communication line on the helmet while the Sisu was going 40 km/h. Lucky me I still got my head attached. They should have had the wire cutter on those too. No idea if they do these days.
The "Musti" is a heavy recoilless gun, it can fire AP, HE and illumination rounds. Think it is almost completley retired now.
When I did my military service in Finland the AT platoon I belonged to has 3 PASI´s and 1 all terrain truck as vehicles. The PASI work well for our needs to transport the troops and gear, dont think we had any issues with our 3 PASI´s during that period.
AP? I doubt that. HEAT and HE for sure.
Ap as it's primary use was against the neighbors T 56 - 72s never heard of any illumination rounds.
@@peterwesterback5875 Sure was, but for that, HEAT ("ontelokranaatti") ammunition was used. Recoilless rifles lack the muzzle velocity needed for AP rounds to work.
I don't know about illumination rounds. White Phosphorus has been used.
@@wanhapatu yes I see your point, it was a shaped charge not a solid penetrator but it still made a nice hole 😄. We only used the above mentioned and practice solids, might have seen an he go off in Lappi but no wp.
@@peterwesterback5875 My father once told me he used WP in a demonstration to set fire a barn or something while higher up officers were watching. Not 100% reliable source but a fun story anyway.

Pasi is quite common first name for Finnish men, and also short from panssari-Sisu (armoured Sisu).
Travelled in the Pasi quite a bit during my national service and as a anti-tank squad leader I had plenty of experience with the Musti. It's a 95mm recoilless piece of kit that was as dangerous behind as it was Infront. There was a saying that the fastest entity in the forest was a Musti crew, because when you fired it everybody and their dogs knew where we were due to the back blast. You'll find quite a few clips on the tube if you look for Musti 😉

Hello! I was XA-180 driver/leader. When we were heading to our "end war" exercise. I drove through 3 fully grown birches. We had motor march 80km/h (50mph), during winter night/ late evening, Then there came passenger car against us on the road. I little bit steered to the right, and wheel got "sucked" into snow. I tried to get back to road, but PaSi was only going deeper to ditch. Then I turned wheels straight, and started braking. We went through 3 birches to the field. when we stopped, first checked that nobody was injured. Then we checked damages of PaSi. Only damages were, left mirror broken, orange rotating light was broken and right side snow chains were hanging on one birch. Half of the one birch was on the roof of PaSi. On the roof was also back packs of the crew. None of them was dropped. I am auto mechanic, so I checked that there was no major damage in chassis, steering, axels etc., with flashlight. We had that same PaSi through that training. Crew inside was sleeping when that happened, and they thought, that we arrived to our destination. Thankfully, guy who was leader, did drop into cabin in time. That birch on roof, would have made bad damage...
Yeah, the Pasi is a really cool amphibious APC. It is kind of awkward to drive (at first, you get used to it) because of the 4 wheel steering. At low speeds you're almost doing a crab walk while turning, combining that with crappy visibility is not the best mix. Without the vehicle commander it's really easy to be a bull in a china-shop.
But you wouldn't really mind if you hit something, just keep on trucking.
Yay, I so glad you made this video! Random Military History (Satunnaista Sotilashistoriaa) deserves so much more subscriptions, and I'm sure this is how he's going to get those! Unfortunately his dry and witty humour gets somewhat lost in the translation.
I have only good memories traveling with PASI, one time we were stuck in rush hour in one of the more narrow streets of Helsinki and I was just admiring how the drivers kept us out of trouble and just drove the APCs in normal traffic.

We still use XA-185 as in UN mission and in our Readiness Units (VYKS) because those new models aren't in mass-production yet
When i was in the army i saw some of the very first Patria AMV's. And have to say very impressive, really really fast and above all extremely silent compered to pasi
My father server in UN peace keeping mission in Lebanon late 80s after his conscription in Finnish Army. They used to do daily patrols with these. His job was a spotter and he also did maintenance on PASIs. The experience he got from working on these is still on daily use today. He can fix any motor vehicle you throw at him. My favorite time is when we do maintenance on our cars once a year and when it's time to change tires for the season.
I remember looking at all the photographs he took in Lebanon when I was a kid :)
I like how it was emphasized that it was designed to be a boring and ordinary vehicle that's cheap, easily maintainable and functional but not the best jack of all trades. Here in Finland there would be no point in designing some supervehicle of which costs are so great that we could afford just a couple.
ps. Have to say that it's a pain in the ass trying to sit inside of Pasi with combat gear and a helmet because you can't sit upright.

I was there. Probably walked past me a bunch. Lol. I was at Skopje guarding everyone. The over all commander of U.N. forces loved me. Lol. He saw my last name on my uniform and always stopped to talk to me. Our cooks were Norwegian and I got "extra" food from them all the time. Lol. Good times.
As mentioned in the video PASI was based on truck technology and the need to get a vehicle for UN forces. Adopted by UN forces and other defense forces, it has been a success story. First vehicles had 30% parts of SISU truck, so it was cost-effective to operate. Later models like 203 have been designed with military technology. While not intended as infantry fighting vehicle
PASI has shown amazing durability, a roadside bomb, and RPG attacks mentioned at Lebanon UNIFIL. Naturally, it's a dangerous vehicle when driven off the road, one specific road turn in Beirut having killed several Finnish peacekeepers. Patria AMV with its futuristic 8x8 or 6x6 versions (6x6 resembling PASI a lot from outside) is not considered replacement for PASI but a modular and dedicated IFV with a different design lineage and better mine protection.

When I did my military service, we winter tested the SISU (PASI) XA-180 for the Swedish army together with the Soviet MT-LB and a modified Bandvagn (Bv) 206. The modified Bv 206 were a regular "plastic" Bv 206 with a lower cabin and had weights mounted on it to simulate the extra weight from armour. It is what now is the the armoured Bv 308/309. The army also bought some left over Soviet MT-LB and BMP-1 from the unified Germany, partly as as part of the deal for the first batch of the Leopard 2 MBT and were named Pansarbandvagn (Pbv) 401 and Pbv 501. The BMP-1 were surprisingly bad with snow. Sweden also use different versions of the PASI/SISU, often for UN missions.
When first time saw Pasi live, it definitely was bigger than thought. Never got change to ride on Pasi in army times. It was quite usual to see Pasis and Leopards in traffic when I was living in Hämeenlinna, and every time in highway those things totally amazed.
This was our warhorse back in 2004 when I did my national service. It felt like there were no where that it couldn't go... except towards the enemy, that was a no no... Back up with 12,7 mm singing and dismount the infantry. Once the driver decided to park on an incline. The drop from the back was about 2 meters. Looked like 5 meters to me. Since I weighed about 140kg with my gear on, I decided to climb on the top to chill for a while instead of jumping down. It's a risky proposition normally as well. Other wise, it's truly a comfortable ride, most of my squadmates managed to take a nap while riding in it.
Yeah the old PASI is quite the workhorse. And the futuristic vehicle you saw was the patria amv, more of a wheeled ifv than a apc. Beside it was the new patria 6x6 which from the outside looks very much like it's predecessor but internally is very different. Built with the same concept of simple reliability in mind but with modern advancements. Teknavi, a finnish magazine, has pretty good videos from both of them, though I didn't manage to find the amv video with eng subs. I know it exist though.

There's actually quite a lot of infantry vehicle development going on in Finland right now. in addition to the previous two there's the protolabs pmpv, akin to a MRAP and the sisu GTP which is akin to your humvee or more like its successor the jltv.

When I was a conscript it was known as the mobile sauna. Also it can fit 14 infantry instead of advertised 10 because they always order 4 of us to sit on the floor. Some other notable things are that it was always mandatory to wear the hearing protection when inside due to the loud ambience from the engine. It's also good idea either way because the most common injury in the pasi during conscription service is hearing loss from someone incompetent accidently firing a (blank) round off inside. If my memory serves me right, driving crew is always 3: driver, vehicle commander out of front hatch and third guy from rear hatch for the eyes used during reversing. It can indeed swim, it was not mentioned much in the video you watched. It has two rear propellers enabling it to eg. island hop in the archipelago albeit in a very, very slow speed. The most commonly mounted weaponry now adays I think is the ITK (a 50 cal 'air defense rifle'). It can be an enjoyable ride as a passenger if you're allowed to peek out one of the hatches for complimentary all natural air conditioning.
Don't knock bicycle infantry even though it is outdated it can be Hella effective. I uses no oil. Uses less energy then marching. And in a day you can go over 100km per day (and still fight) instead of 40km marching. And can be repaired by the units themselves. And when mobilization people can bring their own bikes 😉 when the choice is presented go by bike, but then I am Dutch AF 😅
I served 11 months in Finnish defence forces and had privilege to march over 600 kilometers with a bicycle. :D Plus pretty much every time we went shooting we used bicycles. One more good thing about bicycles. You don't have to carry the weight, so you are battle ready even after 100 km march.

We dutchies do everything by bike 😍 walking costs four time more energy then biking. Don't know about the numbers when carrying load. But I think it is even more.
My father told me of how during his time in the army there was training for how to dismount the bike fast in case of ambush. Apparently you turned the handles until wheel was sideways, so you would go flying off the bike. Then you would preferably land or roll into a ditch where you could take stock of the situation.
Never heard about it during my time in army. Probably shelved as the bad idea it sounds like it is.
That cannon looking thing is a recoilless rifle. Its a 95mm AT weapon that doesn't kick. It's actually a smaller version of the U.S M40 Recoilless rifle (which is 105mm). Old fashioned weapon, but pierces even modern tanks. They must've been joking to put that thing on a PaSi.
It is called recoilless, but man when you fire it it really kicks the air out of your lungs. I dragged one around for most of my time back in 1995.
The modern Patria 8 wheel version is the best one. Pasi has been modernized to supermodular version which is why even USA uses it. Striker is US version based on updated design.
Great to see this reaction! Pasi is an good old workhorse. Very pleasant to drive and the off-road capability is great. As long as the tires get a grip and touch the ground you will most likely keep moving :D We also have had some small issues on the road, but were able to fix the them on the spot and keep going. Just a marvelous specimen!
During my military service I was designated as a panssarijääkäri and most of my service after the basic training was in a PaSi. We had 4 PaSis for the platoon and only one of them had a working heating system for the passangers. During our last big training operation we had to wait for our combat engineers to clear the way; they failed the first day so we got to spend another 7 hours sitting in unheated PaSis in -20c weather (that was after the first day of around 8 or so hours) .
The "Musti" / Blackie is a recoilless rifle. Think of it as a massive bazooka basically. It still has decent penetration (560mm with the new ammo that was designed to work against reactive armour), is accurate and can be fired rapidly and also had other types of ammo for use against bunkers and infantry targets. ...but it has now been replaced by anti-tank rockets in the Finnish Defence Forces. Back when I was a conscript (2003) some troops were still trained to operate it, so it was in use for a long time.
For what i have heard is that the variant with recoilless rifle turret was build for use in Cyprus and it was mostly just for show of force as the locals didn't always take Pasi:s seriously as vehicles with actual guns. Turret was uncomfortable to be in as it had no ventilation, sights for the weapon were somewhat jury rigged and the weapon had to be loaded through the rear hatch. Weapon was apparently used only once in a demonstration for guests and for gunner's surprize he managed to hit the target on first shot. He was told to fire annother shot so annother crew man loaded the weapon.
One note about Pasi: it has a relatively large turn radius of 22 meters.
Around 19:30 - 19:40 the narrator mentions that they were sold to Estonia for a "Brothers in arms" price.
I would love to see that done with other Finnish military equipment being replaced, i.e. the F/A-18s and Rauma-class missile boats. It would benefit the security of both nations.
I'm not sure either system, F/A-18 or the Rauma boats, is usable anymore at that point, after all the metal fatigue. Estonia might also not have the know-how to deal with the problem with the boats, if it's even possible, but who knows. What comes to the Hornets, Finland should cannibalise them to keep some of them flying, for training and some limited use. You can't really build a functional air force out of crafts at the end of their life, so it's not like Estonia would even buy them. Having operational jet fighters is not just having the fighters, there's a whole vast support system behind them, including lots of people with very specialised knowledge and training. Estonia would have none of that, and gaining it for the sake of a bunch of washed out fighters would definitely not be worth it.
PASIs are a totally different thing. Made of steel, not aluminium+composites, and easy to repair and maintain. There's not really a whole lot of special knowledge needed to keep them going.
This was a nice one. I was a signals corporal in the FDF, we had quite a few signals PASIs as well. The FDF uses them for everything.
I was in Macedonia in 1994 (FRYOM) and I saw a few I these. They were huge vehicles and pretty cool looking. I was in NordBat. Norway, Sweden, Finland and the U.S.. I guarded the UN HQ in Skopje. Good times...
my father was in UN and he was in and drove a PASI. He was in Bosnia, Kosovo and Lebanon if i remember right. He has told me stories about what he did there good stories and about how good PASI was.
The one with the massive turret is probably the testbed version which had the AMOS (Advanced Mortar System System) turret on top of it. Automatic twin-barrel 120 mm gun-mortar capable of both direct and indirect fire (and IIRC 16 round MRSI strikes). There won't be any room left for anything else at that point though.

Can confirm the cross-country mobility. In one refresher training, we got chance test it. It goes in forest and steep slopes well.
95-S-58-61 is Finnish heavy recoilless rifle. At-guys had/have lots of fun "taking Musti for walkies." During winter, with deep snow in particular.
"Musti" is one of the basic Finnish dog names. Hope that clarifies a bit.
its Swedish (i believe) I think they called it "Lik kistan" aka "the coffin". Because it looks like a coffin and you could easily get trapped inside and die.

Nice to see your video about Pasi! I was a Pasi driver / leader when I served my duty in the Finninsh Defence forces 20 years ago. I have to say that my 1st choise was to continue to nco and officer school but since I had had truck licence on my driving licence and even tho it is not requirement to be nco to command Pasi I was chosen for the duty. Which is even bit occuard but it was harder to be those 2+2 men from the company selected for the Pasi duty than to get to nco / co training. I have to say I am so clad that I had the honor.
For some notes over here I want to mention that everyone that had the training had the training to be eighter driver or commander. Usually because one has the same combat buddy the roles get more of one being the driver one the commander but the knowledge is the same.
For driving it, if anyone can find clips of rally in Finland we drove those same small sand roads in the mids of Finland whit Pasi. Size is bit hard to get from these clips but the size is bit of a big lorry or truck and quite lenghty. Tire size is much bigger than many usually thinks. It's diameter is about 150 cm bit over 5 feet, so it is not a walk in the park to clime in the top of Pasi.
For training we had training grounds as well ofcource but even when one can imagine how nice it could be to take the thing to its limits on big or tiny roads it was the purpose. Crew just learned how to drive it together whit kind of 4 eyes on the road. Faster you get men where they should be and out from harms way the better. Higher ranks loved it as we youngsters did - and love still. After 20 years I am quite sure I would still remember how to fix it. Few things that are not mentioned on the video is that Pasi can be used as a boat. To cross rivers or lakes. It will take about 5-15 minutes depending the crew to get it ready to float. I have to say that the feeling is so awesome to drive that to a lake and drive around using those propellors and wheels to navigate. Secendly those tires have air but they also have inner layer so if a tire breiks even so badly that all the air is gone it is still quite easy to drive. I know since we accidentally broke one. I might still own a broken tire to Finnish defence forces tho I think it is ok by now. :) 3rd its inner space can be presured so it holds say gas attack. Even if the crew is not ready for one. And ofcource the fact that Pasi has so many variations that are official ones, there are so many more so called crew modifications that had have been made time after time over these 35 years and I think are still made by those young men and women in the forrest traing camps all over Finland. So overall it is truly all terrain all around crew friendly vehicke. If you or anyone has a change to be in one or drive one you wont regret it.
I could and would like to tell so much more stories, like commanding a US Colonel since commander of the Pasi is commander the whole crew, but it would be a book so here is my short comment. :)

Ah, good old Musti... We were the last concripts trained to use them, such a cool system. Our Musti was made in the 50's, my mil service was in 2008...
1999 I was in Cambodja with humanitarian mine clearing group an we had pasi as daiy drive to work. that was cool ride.

AMV vehicle was my main transport vehicle in defence force, years 2011-2012. Really nice, and you don't really need cooler for vehicle in Finland(most of the time, you need heater LUL). Like your videos man, make me remember old times.

The "tuned" one was not with a cannon, but a 95mm recoilless rifle/launcher that is or at least have been commonly used in Finland (but moved through forests by men).

Im trained with Xa-185 and drove it 8months in army + 4weeks in Nordic Peace 2001 exercise. Very solid vehicle :)
I drove a PASI in my military year. Its fun to drive it to a lake. You just use the propellers with buttons. Just drive around the lake and you can see the water level on your small windscreen. It is an awesome machine and it handles winter very well.
I did almost 2 years very intimate service with it. Good vehicle for what it is. Great support on deployments. Very good mobility. We now get the 188 models which have a remote operated turret and designated shock absorption seats. BUT, yoda is kind of left out in the background. Not so much a centre piece compared to those helmets lol.

So.. the reason why information and graphics are available so easily is partly because Finland wants to be the most transparent country in the world. There are very few military secrets, though vital information is naturally kept out of plain sight. So potential enemies can acquire pretty much whatever by OSINT. It's both good and a bad thing, good in a sense that anyone who knows enough, knows that invasion in Finland would cost a lot. Bad thing is that we don't have many aces in our sleeves. Also doesn't help much that conscripts are trained in masses every year and they keep a lot of people updated about military doctrines and equipment used in different branches, cause it's probably the most common small talk topic between finnish men after few beers.
Great video! During my conscript service I was assigned to drive/command one of the XA-180s. I was honestly surprised how maneuverable the thing was - it responds very well to steering and omg can it climb steep slopes. Pity that the video didn't include PASI's swimming capabilities: if you drive it to 180cm ( roughly 6ft) deep into water it starts to float and you can maneuver it with the propellers in its rear. Ive been to same offroad driving training with the PASI drivers. It is absolutely insanity the kind of cliffs these things can climb up even during winter.

US should place an order for modern PaSi, i mean they need something like that and it's cheaper to buy them than start designing and building them from scratch

They might get the NEMO mortar system for their strykers but that's about the only Finnish acquisition that looks realistic at this point. They already have the new JLTVs that are supposed to replace the humvees,

As a kid we always went with my father to the military expo in Tampere and I'll remember for ever the times I got to the cockpit of a fighter jet and the time when I got to roam around central avenues in PASI on a gunners hatch with heavy machine gun 😂
I did my military service at FDF in Helsinki as a Pasi commander/driver. As said on the video Pasi is really easy to drive on and off road and the hardest thing about it is to see outside. Especially when you have the window hatches closed. In normal traffic they were always open of course. With the (snow) chains hanging on the side the vehicle is about 3 meters wide which is almost as much as a traffic lane in Finland. We did some driving lessins through Helsinki downtown so you can imagine the sweat and heat in the cabin. At Santahamina garrison there are some trees on the inside curves which have suffered some damage. Wonder why...
Some memories of the XA-185's we used:
- No seat belts so don't drive too fast to a bump or you hit your head (and shoulders) to the roof and your commander buddy might fall off. He almost did.
- If you hit a deep enough muddy pond too fast and do not have the front floor plugged you'll have a mud fountain in the cockpit. And you will get soaked. It's also a pain in the ass to clean...
- It's possible to build a hammock with your equipment to the ceiling.
- The front footwells are so big they held huge amount of snacks during longer trainings. Snacks amd tobacco were highly valued due to availability issues in training.
- We did a slippery track course which is mandatory to get a driving license in Finland. It's a quite funny feeling when you do 360 with a 15ton 6-wheeler.

it's interesting indeed how big it looks. Since I have been in one for just one introductory trip in the back and I still kind of remember how it wasn't that easy to fit into, just being in civilian clothes etc. Once inside, it felt like there was much more room in there. What you'd call "dismounting" I guess etc.... still awesome, kind of like the M/39 rifle is still awesome.

At 11:56 when you said what is that. That was either a patria NEMO or a AMOS system. 120mm mortar turret system obviusly by finnish design with some swedish cooperation i think.( nemo is lightweight variant with 1 barrel and amos is a dual barrel.) both are autoloaded and in a closed off turret. :)
In Estonia we still use them and we have newer pasi 188 aswell , we used them as AFVs in Helmand , lost few to ieds . Now we use them in Mali.
I was trained to drive those when I was a conscript and I have to say it was surprisingly easy to drive despite it's size. The off road capabilities were also great. During our training we spent quite a lot of time off roading and only time I got somewhat stuck was when I drove on a tree stump that was hidden in the undergrowth (I could back up to get unstuck though) Another fun detail about PASI is that during really hard braking the rear wheels rise off the ground(at least on asphalt).
Yep, drove a lot of XA-185's as my time as conscript... The Valmet 6-cylinder diesel was a bit lacking in power especially at highway speed, and as some guys said already its quite noisy, the howl of the reduction gear next to the driver at highway speed was quite loud. The transmission on XA-185 is an Allison automatic, so the vehicle is real easy to drive, visibility from drivers seat is not the best so in tight spaces the vehicle commander is really needed!

Remember driving 185 Pasi downhill +100km/h in Lebanon, was a lot of fun. It climbs a fkn tree it goes so well in all kind of terrains haha.
I almost said, in that I do not have much experience on PASI, but it is also chassis for Ito-90/Croaker system, with which I spent 9 month as NCO trainee (after 2 months of rookie camp). Bit top heavy due missile turret, but it was still able to climb quite steep hills provided that all systems had transport locks on.
I've never traveled in Pasi but during my conscript service in artillery our battery's command post was a Pasi modified as a command vehicle.
@2:31 bottom left picture is taken in southern Lebanon in Qantara village very close to Pos 9-50 (33.2721774, 35.4655473)few years before I was stationed there. Vehicle was making three point turn and driver side middle tire hit presumably 6-8 kilogram Easter Bloc anti tank mine. Tire, power steering hydraulics and middle axle were completely destoryed immobilizing vehicle. Construction of frame worked 100% as designed. No casualties or serious injuries to the crew except sore ass for the guy who happened to sit almost straight above of explosion and temporary loss of hearing of leader of the vehicle.

I almost sunk one PASI(not really) when coming to docks with the Uisko 600, not knowing the PASI's was training for swimming operations in the shallow waters. The driver told me they took in a deacent amount of water. I would not want to be swimming with thease in rought weather! Cool vid!
