Thank you everyone for the awesome response to this video. Thank you for taking the time to watch, like, comment, and subscribe. It's really overwhelming to have so much support! Special thanks to @BrysComics for helping my channel get noticed this week!
I've never seen this channel before, and never saw this youtuber before, but SOMEHOW before she even began to open the box, I somehow KNEW this "grail favorite" was going to be an early SILVER SURFER.
I DON'T know how.
But I'm happy to see her excitement and appreciation for it.
Congratulations!
I guess when you know, you know! 😉 Thanks for checking out my channel! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
One of the best covers ever, interior page art is spectacular, as are your original art pages. Epic stuff, well done!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked all the parts of the video. I appreciate the comment! 👍
The book is amazing, but better than that is your excitement and joy of acquiring it.
Thank you so much! 😁
Rewatched this video again. So amazing!!!!
Wow, thank you! 😉
You’ve got great taste, Karen. Silver age is the best! And that cover is iconic.
Thank you so much! 👍
Hi Karen! Congrats for acquiring Silver Surfer # 4. It is an awesome comic. The cover is outstanding. I had a copy that was CGC graded at 7.5 (VF-).l and sold it through Comic Link for $347 on 4/27/2017. Your copy looks pretty nice. I hope it gets a good grade with CGC. Have a nice rest of your Thursday. 👋 Steven Romero
Hi Steven! Thanks for sharing your story. I hope you have a great day as well! 👍
Awesome and definitely one of the best covers created.
Thank you! 😉
Awesome book!! Such an awesome cover!
Thank you! 😁
Congratulations!!! Absolutely a grail. Enjoy it!
Thank you so much! 😁
Congrats on getting one of your grails. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! 😁
Wow I've only ever seen the cover of that book, the inside is just as stunning as the cover. Thank you for sharing. *subbed. =)
Thank you for your comment and for subscribing to the channel! When I read comments like yours, I'm glad I decided to flip through the whole book. 😉
Many congratulations, Karen, on a wonderful book! Thank you also for the extra bonus of viewing original artwork by Big John.
Thank you so much, CAB! I thought you might enjoy seeing both the comic and the Buscema original art. Glad you liked the video. 😉
Congratulations on acquiring such a classic Silver Age issue, Karen! Btw, if you ever want a cheaper reading copy you CAN flip through, you can get Fantasy Masterpieces #4 that was published a decade later. Anyway, one thing that has always been true in the comics hobby is that not all copies of the same grade ARE the same grade. Eye appeal is EVERYTHING. I'm glad you're happy with this one.
Given how few people who buy raw comics ever bother to flip through them for fear of damaging them and more people by already slabbed comics, I think it was great that you did a flip through of the book for your audience. Sure, people can look at and read it via modern reprints, but the art and colors look like crap on modern, white, glossy paper. There's nothing quite like seeing the story on newsprint! Sneaking in a peek at not just one, but TWO great original Buscema Thor pages was also a very ingenious decision, thereby placating the original art collectors as well as the comics collectors. I can't believe you have a transformation page! That's a real coup in original art circles! Well done! The musical accompaniment was really good and the editing cuts almost seamless, showing just how hard you've been working at it. Thanks for the plug, btw.🙏 Keep up the great work and I'll catch you in the next one!👍
Thank you for the tip about FM4, Rubén! l will definitely be on the lookout for it so that I can read SS4 in comic form endlessly without worrying about the binding. You're welcome for the plug, it's my pleasure. I'm really happy that you liked the video. 😁
Nice pick up. Love to see the excitment on peoples faces when they open up their grail book for the first time. The scrape marks on the front cover can be worked out with a large metal ball bearing. There are videos on UA-cam showing how to perform the repair.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I already have some ball bearings in my pressing supplies. Thank you for the suggestion. 😉👍
That is a surefire grail . Iconic cover. Congrats on an amazing pickup!
Thank you so much! 😁
Congratulations on adding such an awesome book to your collection! Those Buscema pages are out of this world, too. The dynamic figure work is just amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! Glad you liked the Buscema original art, too! Thanks for watching! ☺
Congrats on a great pickup of a classic cover! Always make me smile to see someone else acquire a book that they've been after and are so happy to own! 😊🍻🍻
Thank you so much, Dave! I'm super happy with the book. Thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. ☺
Get it cleaned and pressed before sending it in for grading. Nice book!
I plan on doing it myself in the future. Thank you! 👍
One of my favorite covers. Congratulations
Thank you! 😊
Easily one of the best comic book covers of all time, congratulations!
💯Thank you so much!
Not a Silver Surfer fan, but always loved that cover. Book presents really well! Happy for you.
Thank you so much, Larry! 😁
I was a fan of the Buscema's on Fantastic Four (in the 1980s). My favorite Thor would have to be Jack Kirby or Walt Simonsen (and favorite character, Balder the Brave).
Congratulations on getting one of your dream books 👍😸
You have great taste! Thank you! 😁
To Me THAT is the most Iconic Marvel Age Comic....hands down. Congrats Karen on a Beautiful Eye-Candy Book...It presents much better...a stunner. Great Gloss also. BTW, ETA Nick's YT has a Great Square-bound pressing tutorial....yes, spines are glued on and you need a raised template to press, to prevent staples from damaging cover. I really like Chic Stone's inks.
I couldn't agree with you more! I watched a few tutorials for pressing square-bound books a while ago. I will definitely get some practice on some test books before I ever think about pressing this one. Thanks, CJ Design! 😁
etanick LIVES 😃
Great pickup! The colors inside are so vibrant, it’s amazing. The two pages you showed are great, I love all the details added into each panel. Great video!
Thanks, Greg! I'm glad you enjoyed both the comic and the original art pages! Thanks for your comment! 👍
Grail for sure! I got mine at the beginning of the year and I spent years wanting one but not having enough to afford it.
Wow! Pop Comics! I've always enjoyed watching your videos. Congratulations on picking up your copy earlier this year! Thank you for your comment! 😁
You are very welcome ;) @@KarensPages
Awesome to see you accumulating silver age at such a good time. Congrats!
Yes, it's certainly seems like a great time to buy right now! Thank you! ☺
Buscema + Thor = Asgardian gold!
I love it, Rick! 👍
Your expression when looking at the interior says that this is a book that deserves to be seen, and not slabbed. It's a beautiful piece of work that the reprints don't do justice. I'm gonna go look at mine!
Absolutely! I'm glad I could inspire you to pull this one out of the box again. 😉
SS #4 is a excellent choice! It's a all-time classic no question. It's in my top 10 comic covers also.
Awesome! Thank you so much for watching the video and leaving a comment! 👍
The Silver Surfer is my favorite character and this is my favorite cover of all time! Look amazing! Enjoy!
It's definitely the best cover ever! Thank you for your comment! 😉
You make the best videos. 👏👊
Thank you so much! 👊💥
My all time favorite Marvel cover!
Mine, too! 😉👍
WOW! Congrats! I haven't even finished watching and had to comment. The copy looks great! Fantastic addition!! Fully expect to see that on display behind you.
Thanks, TK! I am definitely going to cherish this one and put it on display at some point! 😉
@@KarensPages I'm sure you've seen this one, but...just in case, check out the current Heritage 2023 October 6-8 International Original Art, specifically Lot #52002 - might be one for you perhaps?
The Ultimate Marvel Cover, the main part of the book looks lovely far better than the grade given, I'm sure you'll get those "claw" marks out, lovely add to your collection!
Thank you! It definitely looks better than a 2.5, but we'll see! Thanks for taking the time to comment. 😉
This cover by John Buscema is not only my #1 grail for a non first appearance, it ranks on the top 10 best covers of all time.
Can't argue with that! 😉
Awesome pickup! Congrats!
Thank you so much! ☺
Holy crap! That’s the book I was hoping for. It’s my favorite comic cover ever. That’s the only comic where I feel like I have to brace myself for impact.
Exactly! Glad you liked the video! 😁
That's my favorite cover. I have a couple of John's original SSurfer art pieces. even with the condition issues , that copy still looks great. Congratulations.
Awesome! I bet those SS pieces are stunning! Thank you so much! ☺
Great looking copy! Congrats on an amazing silver-age book.
Thank you! 😉
Iconic cover that copy is amazing! Better than what Ive seen online
Thank you so much! It's a pretty sweet copy. 😉
Congratulations on your find! John Buscema's cover art on this issue is, in my opinion, the most dynamic in the entire run of the Silver Surfer's original series. My copy probably doesn't look as nice as yours, but I bought it straight off the news stand in 1968, and it is well read. Thanks for your video. I loved your enthusiasm.
Thank you so much! Wow, that's really cool that you bought it straight off the newsstand in 1968! I love hearing stories like that! Thanks for sharing! ☺
A grail is what you define it to be and you could have thousands of grails just like there are thousands of keys. Oh yes Silver Surfer #4 that is a grail for a lot of people. Yes sometimes simple is better. The colors are very vibrant. That is a wonderful copy. I love the splash page of Loki as well, very iconic look!
Thank you, Mr. Akins! I tend to use "grail" synonymously with "favorite." Glad you enjoyed the video! 😉👍
@@KarensPages I have noticed many things I say over and over again now that I am making videos as well.
@@WhatIsOntheComicRack I do the same thing! 😂
You must love Daredevil # 30 too. Great pick up.
Daredevil+Thor+Gene Colan = Perfection 😉
Congratulations on your win!🎉If you do press it, you will need to support the spine using a stack of boards (I like to use 1” slices of magazine boards) and then press the book at a lower temp than usual (125 degrees) Fahrenheit and for longer (30 minutes). To prevent the staples from pushing through the cover I use three sheets of photocopy paper underneath the front and back cover. Love the video Karen and so happy for you. 😊
Thank you so much, Bruce! Those are some really great tips and thank you for writing out the details! I figure that with a square-bound book I should take a more gentle approach with the pressing than with a standard comic book. 👍
Great book to have, definitely a classic and grail. You should be proud. Congratulations on your purchase.
Thank you so much! ☺
Buscema is a master at the anatomy. Stan really knew how to recruit the talent.
For sure, Buscema was a master. He's one of my favorite comic book artists. 😁
Very nice!! Congrats!! That is a very good copy of SS 4. Thank you for sharing the pages as well. Closest I will ever get to being able to see them.
Original artwork would be super awesome to collect. I'd want some pages of Byrne's FF run. Again only a dream at the moment. In other words totally understand your excitement.
Thank you so much! Byrne's FF pages are pretty awesome -- I hope you achieve your dream of getting one someday. 👍
Very kool, it always feels amazing when you unbox a book you have been hunting for
Yes it does! Thank you for your comment! ☺
Congrats! Beautiful book!
Thank you! 😉
Amazing splash page - congratulations!
I agree, the book opens with an amazing Loki splash page! Thank you! 👍
Wow! That looks very nice for a GD+, Congratulations, it’s a great book among the top in my collection. I never really considered how Thor lovers might also appreciate the cover.
Thank you! I remember seeing your copy in your "Top 5 Meaningful Comics" video (I left a comment for you). All I see is Thor on this cover. 😂
Nice acquisition! I bought this one when it came out (I was 8). Just recently sent it to CGC and received a 2.5 grade. A beautiful cover that still presents well!
Thank you! That's really cool that you bought SS4 when it first came out! Your newly graded copy is much more meaningful since it's a childhood book! Glad it still presents well! ☺
What a beautiful addition. 😊
Thank you! ☺
Love your energy and your tastes. So nice to see genuine passion for these timeless books.
Thank you so much, Cathy! ☺
Damn 🎉🎉🎉 nice copy. Just some minor ticks. Looks like a great copy. I say higher than a 2.5.
I just love the smell of old comics books 🫠
Thank you! There's nothing quite like the smell of an old comic book. I could smell it when I was flipping through it. Something you won't get from an omnibus. 😁
Just found your channel and subscribed, your sincere love for the hobby comes shining through the screen. And with Daredevil as my favorite character, love the title of your channel! Great score on the SS4, you got a steal if you paid a Good price. That and Nick Fury 4 are my my favorite covers ever!
Thank you so much for subscribing and leaving a comment! I did get a good price for SS4. Nick Fury 4 is an awesome cover, too. Classic Steranko! 👍
Your editing of these videos grows by leaps and bounds every episode. It's wonderful to watch you grow in confidence and skill. You're teaching me a lot.
Thank you so much, @perceptionmanagement! I appreciate your constant support.😊
Geez, if you paid a 2.5 price for that comic you stole it. Wonderful copy! Congratulations!🎉
Thank you so much! When I saw the pictures of the comic at auction, I thought it looked better than a 2.5. I'm very happy with the price that I paid. 😉
Yes! An incredible cover by a master! Congratulations! And, thank you for showing the interior pages. You don't get that from most channels. I have the story in a Silver Surfer Marvel Masterworks TPB, but there's nothing like the real comic pages. ••• Those OA pages are wonderful too. Buscema is one of my all-time favorite artists and is so much better than Kirby * runs and hides *
Yeah, you better go run and hide! Just kidding. Thank you for your comment. I didn't say it in the video, but I love both Kirby's and Buscema's versions of Thor. 😉👍
You can't deny the coolness!!! ConGRAILulations
Thank you so much! 👍
Congratulations that comic looks amazing, the colors are popping off the page. Good luck with pressing that book. Awesome Grail!!!!
Thank you so much! The book really stood out...especially the colors! 😉
Wow, what a fantastic book. I really like the look inside this classic comic too. Thank you very much for sharing this. New subscriber here. 😊😊🙏🙏👊👊
Thanks for subscribing! I'm so glad that you liked seeing the inside of the comic! Thank you for your comment! ☺
“Karen’s Page” I see what you did there 😅
😉
Congrats on such a great comic book, It's on my to get list as well as issue #1. Your book presents very well for it's condition, especially the spine being in nice shape. Well done 👍
Thank you so much! I hope you are able to get both SS #1 & #4 someday! Yes, I was very happy to see that the spine is in such great condition! Glad you liked the video! 😉
Great pick up! Will look good on your back shelf. You plan on grading it? P.S I like your setup.
Thank you so much! I am plan to grade it after I clean and press it sometime in the future. 👍
In my limited experience, cgc grades these silver age square-bound books more leniently than the saddle-stitched books. It looks from the video much better than a 2.5 to me.
Thank you for this information. It will be interesting to see how CGC grades this one. 😉
lol maybe what you have is a first cameo of wolverine's claws on that cover 🤣😉
Ok, that's pretty funny. 👍😂👍
Just found your channel… Thank you youtube algorithm! Lol Subscribed!
Thank you for subscribing, I'm so glad you found my channel! 👍
Awesome one of the best covers ever
Glad you liked it! 😉
The most spectacular thing about your copy is the STUNNING, perfectly-aligned spine. SERIOUSLY. Congratulations on the score...!!! 😃
Thank you so much! The great condition of the spine is one of the reasons why I bought this particular copy.😁
just found your channel. VEry good comics and your good enthusiasm is refreshing. There are NOT a lot fo woman comic book collectors that I see at shows OR on UA-cam.
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm so glad you found my channel! There aren't a lot of women who collect comic books and original art. Hopefully, I can encourage more women to become collectors! 👍
Congratulations! You have great taste in books. I agree with everything you said about the importance of this issue. I'm old, so I was lucky enough to get this back in the 90s before it was insanely expensive. Then again, this thing is priceless.
Thank you, Randy! I enjoyed reading your comment. You were smart to pick up SS4 back in the 90's! 😉
@KarensPages Sure...smart...thank you! Or I've just bought way too many comics in my life. I'm actually a big Thor fan. And I've now just found my copy. This is good. I got it at Eide's in Pittsburgh (best comic shop in the city) and believe it or not, they used to write the price of the comic on the back cover in pencil, so you'd have to pull it out of the bag to see the price. Now, my copy isn't as sharp as yours, I'd put it at 2.0, but I paid a whopping $9 for it in the mid 90s. Wow, I should have bought a dozen.
That is one of my top ten books of all time! I Love my copy and plan to have it till I die. Good video thanks
Thank you! I'll probably do the same with my copy. 😉
Buscema’s art is through the roof in this series. The issue where the Surfer faces off with Mephisto is my favorite, but this one is also astonishing. Love seeing the art on the comic paper. I do feel like the colors in this series in particular do sit better on the warm newsprint paper rather than the white paper and bright remastered color you get in modern reprints.
Thank you for your comment, Nicholas. I completely agree. 👍 The colors really popped as I was flipping through the comic. It's definitely not the same feeling flipping through a modern reprint.
Great video Karen. The original is out of my reach but I will look into getting the 1980 reprint.
Thank you so much! Reprints are great! 😉
So classic that Mile High Comics in Denver has a 3-story banner of it hanging on the side of its building 👊
Super cool! I've always wanted to go to Mile High and now I have another reason to check it out! 👊💥
It is a true silver-age classic that presents better than the grade. Wonderful acquisition!
Thank you, @TheSameoldjoe! 😁
its a TOP TIER COMIC...TTC of your collection!
Thanks, Hart! I hope you are doing well! 👍
@@KarensPages doing better thanks.
@@hartr33 Glad to hear it!
Nice video and book! A Tac Iron press might get those lines out.
Thank you so much! Thanks also for the suggestion! 👍
nice pickup, my friend.
Thanks, Joe. I hope you are doing well!
Thats a good looking comic.
Thank you! 😁
That is a great looking book! Those 3 grooves can be easily pressed out! That book is in my opinion a 5.0-6.0 maybe higher! Get that pressed. I pressed many square bound books like that! Takes care but can be done!
Thanks for the encouragement! 😁
Wow, that's a beautiful copy. Silver Surfer 4, is also one of my Grails. Maybe someday I'll acquire one! Congrats, awesome video! I agree there are a lot of pressible defects in that book. Looks more like in the 5.0-6.0 range raw. Great pick up!!!
Thank you! I hope you find your SS4 someday! I definitely think I can improve my copy. If I can manage a huge grade bump, that would be incredible. 😁
Congratulations. Awesome book!
Thank you so much, Jerry! ☺
Congratulations! It’s fun to live vicariously through you here. Subbed. I appreciate the thorough look over and explanation of the condition.
Thank you for subscribing to my channel. I'm so glad you liked the video! Your comment made me smile. 😁
Definitely one of my target book to get! I have to be content with a reprinted copy I had purchased in the 1970s until I get the original!
I hope you get the original someday! Still, a reprint from the 70's is pretty awesome to have. 👍
Karen, just wow! Huge congrats on acquiring this absolute piece of art! It looks absolutely beautiful and I was shocked when you said the grade. I guessed it was a Thor-related book based on your shirt lol! It’s so fun to watch you obtain these pieces because anyone who collects knows EXACTLY what you’re feeling and it’s amazing. Can’t wait for your next unboxing to share in your excitement again!
Thank you, Brandon! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I have something like 10 unopened boxes on my shelf right now, so it's good to hear that you like unboxing videos because there's definitely more to come! Hope you are doing well! 👍
@@KarensPages I kinda know that feeling but not to the tune of 10 boxes lol. Absolutely love unboxing videos so yes,
Please keep them coming! Have a great weekend, Karen!
@@Moncomics Great! Thank you, Brandon! You too!
i guessed "cap runs wild" kirby cover. then saw the hashtags and guiessed this one. johns art style is not my favorite, but damn this cover stands up to Kirbys best, and with more fluid figures its more dynamic. have to agree.
Cap #106 is a classic Kirby cover. Love the big fists! 👊 Glad you like SS4, too! Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! 👍
Great book, congratulations on the pick up.

Literally set in what eBay said not maybe in demanding was my final offer on this book right here literally of all people to swagglehaus...😅🤞 Got to say though nice book in the colors definitely pop..👊💥
Sorry, I'm not sure what you are saying in your first sentence. Are you saying that you lost out on getting the book to Swagglehaus? Thanks for the compliment on the book! 😉
@@KarensPages sorry it wasn't bad manners it was just a bad voice text lol absolute surfer 1-3 and right now according to eBay it's my last offer four silver surfer number 4.. and at first I was just doing a random bidding that I saw it was swagglehaus.. who I'm already a fan of.. I just keeping it real I'm a big fan of you too... And I know I'm not the only one 😉🤟👍👌👊💥
@@KarensPages the voice text I was trying to say. . I currently own silver surfer number 1-3🐱😉
@@willmartins168 No worries! Thanks for sharing. It's cool that you own SS 1-3! 👍
You want to be careful opening up that era square bounds. The cover is just glued on and the more you open and close them the more chance you could cause a spine split. Put it away and just admire that cover. As far as pressing square bounds there are some good tutorial videos I’ve watched on UA-cam. Great book. Congratulations! Put it back in the bag.. lol
For sure! That will likely be the only time I flip through it. I put it back in the bag pretty quickly. 😉
Congrats~ That's a great book, and your copy looks much nicer than a 2.5 I think with a good clean & press a 4.0 or 4.5 is probably a safe bet. The tears probably hold it back from hitting a 5.0. Regardless, you've got yourself a great comic there!
Thank you so much for your comment! It's encouraging to hear from you, as well as other collectors, that the book looks better than a 2.5. It makes me excited about the possibilities! 👍
@@KarensPages Peronally, I prioritize presentation over CGC grade (mind you, I like a nice high grade for financial reasons too!) but a nice looking book is a nice looking book, regardless of the grade :)
Awesome!! One of my favorite Covers. I have the complete series, with #s 1,3,4 and 18 in CGC 5.5. Great video!
Wow, that's pretty sweet. All awesome covers. SS 18 is a great Herb Trimpe cover. Thank you so much! Glad you liked the video! 👍
I have always loved that cover! That's a nice addition to your collection!
I love the cover so much that I have the statues to go with it! 👍 Thank you! Btw, out of curiosity, do you have a favorite video from my channel since you've watched a lot of them recently?
I have a loose copy of this issue that a buddy of mine wants sooooo bad! I was trying to get him the statues you have in the background for Christmas, I was going to get one and I was trying to get his wife to get the other one, but since she doesn't support his hobby, It was a no go. I may still do it in 2 parts in the future.
I will provide any feedback, would you like the short or long answer?
@@bobbymack3636 I would definitely appreciate any feedback you can offer. I'd like to hear the long answer, if you have time. I'm always trying to improve the quality of my videos (everything I do is self-taught). Thank you!
Congratulations!!!
Thank you! 😉
Congratulations on snagging that, its a great looking 2.5 without doubt it presents better than that. Yes its definately a classic silver age grail, that cover alone John Buscema knocked it out of the park, and I have always said that his brother Sal Buscema dident get enough credit for his inking on that cover. Agreed Chic Stone was a great inker especially on Thor and Captain America, the only thing he did that I was never over keen on was the FF books he inked, I never thought that he got the Thing quite right but of course that is just a personal opinion. And of course John Buscemas art needs no discussion he was a master of the trade, alot of discussion of course over the years of who did the better Surfer Buscema or Kirby but rather than debate I would rather just enjoy both. really enjoyable video , thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I completely agree about Sal Buscema, he definitely deserves more credit. My first video that I did was a Sal Buscema Thor original art unboxing. Chic Stone is one of my favorite inkers! 😉
There are a pair of statues available that recreates the cover of this book.
Grats on the purchase. It’s difficult to get well aligned spines on the Marvel square bound books of that era.
Thank you! That's pretty cool about the statues, I didn't know that. I'm looking at them online right now. They look incredible! Just when I wanted to stop collecting statues... 😂
@@KarensPages I only have about 5 statues and these are 2 of them. The Silver Surfer is one of my favorite characters and (like you) this is one of my favorite covers.
