What Arthur did by reading pi is actually based on something from our world. The really really smart people who can memorize pi by up to more than 100.000 digits do what arthur did. In 2006 a dude named Akira Haraguchi created hundreds of short analogy stories to help to memorize pi by using syllables. (meat = ni ku in japanese wich can be ni kyu = 2 9)
In Soul Eater you call Lord Death by wiping the Numbers 42-42-564 on a window and 42-42-564 would read as: Shi ni - Shi ni - Go ro shi = Death Death Murder or smth
