Ahh, the bliss! Small scale tool parts making for people tinkering with their own tools, everyone is happy, everyone’s life is better, everyone’s tools feels better, and nice people get to make tools for other peoples tools so everyone’s tools are properly tooled. Or tooling. This is the most awesome initiative in hand tools woodworking since… those tools were made! And james’s honesty about the development and function and necessity of the parts cannot be over lauded. If only you guys were 3 years faster, it would have saved me a lot of effort in learning machining, which I started exactly to service my ww hand tools. Actually, no, perfect timing, because otherwise I wouldnt venture into it, and machining is proving to be extremely fun too. Wish you guys all the success on the new enterprise!
i just did a yoke on a 4 1/2. everything was ok but i think you could make some small inprovements to the file to fit yoke. there is a lot of shrinkage in the casting which was not a serious problem but the inside of the yoke is concanve. i dont know if this will cause the slop to return with wear but it would be nice to have a full bearing surface on the wheel after fileing. ths could be acheved by making the inside of the bearing surfaces thicker in your casting allowing for more material to be filed away. Also i think the idea of a cast pilot hole would be great. i had to estimate the center of a really large opening to mark the center. in the end the casting worked out well but maybe could use some tweeking. still i ended up with a far superior tool the i started with thanks.
These parts are a great idea! The slop in one of my planes is quite significant.

I would love to see a dual ratchet kind of thing for the adjuster knobs, where each way you could hear/feel the clicks for adjustments. I wonder if that kind of thing is possible.

Well it would be an engineering challenge and costly in small batches, so not something I am thinking to explore.
If just for the audible/tactile feedback, I think it wouldn’t be so difficult. I could be something like a reed fixed to the frog engaging in a coarse straight knurl cut on the shank of the knob. You would know how much you rotated it from the precious position based on the clicks heard. But that is referenced against the knob, not the blade position. Indexing that to the blade position in a direct, precise and repeatable manner would be difficult, and, honestly, maybe not so useful in a handtool I guess. Remember the iron is not accurately, (machining level accuracy) perpendicular to the sole on a front view: We fiddle with the blade (both body and the bevel)cap iron, and even the sole, so there would be a cosine error on the measurent (number of clicks) and the actual distance traveled. There’s the backlash on the system, which would throw off the measurement, no matter how small. And, ooh boy, I would dread the thought taking the blade assemble off and apart to sharpen it and put it back together. And sharpening is something one should not procrastinate on. 😆

I just found this video today and am glad to see someone is addressing the "Slop" Problem". I went to your link, looked up the items shown here and there's a "Starting at ... " price, but no actual price list. Are these items no longer available? If not, then I'll just have to get "Creative" regarding fattening up the oxen to match the yokes on my planes.

This is an interesting improvement. However, if you are going to invest in all these parts along with a thicker blade and chip breaker, that works out to $182 in parts NOT including the original Stanley plane or the labor to install and tune it up. It's cheaper to buy a Wood River.
but the wood river still has the same problems. of extra slop, not a fine adjustment and you can not get it with a high angle frog.
Damn. They came in just a little too late. I made a big score and decided to switch to all wooden planes in my shop. I found an *almost* complete collection of Scioto Tool Works (Ohio Tool) planes.

Wonder if this yoke will work on my M-F no.9, out of all the smoothers it takes the nicest shavings and feels great in the hand but he is so much slop in adjuster that I don't use it often.

So these work with the bedrock style as well? Most of my planes are either new or bedrock. But my 603 and 604 definitely could benefit from the up grades.
The wedges will not work with bedrocks. And they are connected in a different manner. However the depth adjuster and yoke will work fine.
Is it possible, if those longer screws are used without the wedge, that they might poke through the sole?
the castings hole does not go through the sole but most castings are not deep enough for the longer screws without the wedge. but you can always shorten the wedge.

I know the holes don't go through the sole. I'm thinking about the possibility that someone buys one of these and then uses the new screws when he takes the wedge out. I do not know if the new screws are long enough to do that, but if they are, maybe the device should come with a warning about it. I have heard that this sort of thing can happen with the tote screw if the wrong one is used or a new tote is made and dimentions are different.
@@vincentcoppola9832 The screw will stop turning when it hits the end of the hole. Trying to tighten it farther would require lots of force, which, if the worker thinks about it, would obviously be a bad idea. The typical result would be to twist the head off the screw. As regards totes, while it varies, most Stanley totes are held on by a threaded rod which is threaded into the body obliquely, and a nut, often brass, with a slot cut in it at the top which tightens down on the wooden or whatever grip. It shouldn't turn the rod element at all, and if there is a brass nut, the brass will fail before you could force the rod to turn further.
How do I contact Reed? I need sl longer screws for the frog in my #4, the plane body threads are stripped just at the beginning

These tools look great. I'm afraid I am going to have a hard time justifying $47.00 for the Reed Depth Adjuster (Man, I really want it for my smoothers!) for planes that I didn't pay $50.00 for! I'll keep saving I guess...
ya we were trying to get the price down as far as possible, but small batch manufacturing is expensive. maybe some day we will sell at scale to offer them a bit lower.
