As a Croatian, I have to say this is a good video, the only DON'T that is not correct is the one about tipping. Tipping is not mandatory as in some other countries, especially in a certain percentage. Ofcourse you should leave a tip if you were satisfied with the service/food, it's polite and makes both parties happy. And yeah, some of us may be proud but we don't get offended easily, especially if you're a tourist...

    And also 2 things:
    1) Please don't swim on your floaties to the islands that seem close bc they are NOT
    2) Don't hike in your flip flops bc you are most likely going to brake few bones or even die
(The first one refers especially on Czech and Slovak tourists bc I'm done with the everyday news about few Czech/Slovak lads floating from Zadar to Ugljan (15 km) and almost drowning

Domagoj Tušek also DO NOT put ur (rented) yacht on autopilot while u go drink wodka below deck and also DO NOT go kayaking when locals tell u there is a storm coming. (Refering to the russians that autopiloted their boat straight into an island and all of them died horribly and horribly drunk I guess in the resulting explosion, and the tourist who 2 years ago died while kayaking through a storm after she was warned about the weather... me and my dad found the peddels a few days after washed up on a beach)
And ps DO NOT try to kiss the oleander flowers; they are deadly poisonous xd (saw a german tourist try that had to stop him lol) u can touch the plant but wash hands before touching ur mouth or food and such, don't let kids play w this plant pls. Romans used it to make a poisonous drink for executions so did medieval housewives to get rid of their husbands etc. Little fun fact :D

Of course, the waiters are happy to receive it, but nowhere does it say you should tip and I have no idea where you got those 10% from. One tip. The Croation coast has lots of houses with rooms for rent. Many of them have there own kitchens and bathrooms. It can be better and cheaper than pre-booking a hotel. They usually display a sign at the front, walk up and knock on their door, try visiting the local tourist information centre to get some more info or keep an eye out around ports or ferry terminals for owners looking for business.

Only partially true, meaning that it is not expected from you to tip but it's greatly apreciated since waiters dont have big salaries to begin with.
But it's not like 10% is obligated, it's more like for example if the bill is 115 kunas you round it up to 120 kunas (that's roughly one dollar tip) or if you are really happy with service or feeling generous you can round it up to 150 kunas (around 5 bucks tip) etc.
Oh and don't feel preasured to tip, you can only tip if you are satisfied with waiters service :)

    • @Moms-Spaghetti
      @Moms-Spaghetti 6 років тому +18

Even with what you said, tipping is not required in Croatia. People usually tip few HRK to round up the bill, but it is not required to give anyone 10-15-20% because our waiters are getting paid normal salaries.
I have never said you should never tip, of course, it is welcomed. But it is NOT required and no one will spit in your food because you haven't given them a tip.

Croatia has a lot to interesting places. In the summer it is so crowded, which is why many tourists (at least from my country) are increasingly choosing Montenegro and Albania. My friend chooses Albania, because prices are lower, there are no crowds and you feel like a real explorer. I love northern neighbor - Slovenia. Probably the most underrated country in Europe.

Europe is full of amazing landscapes, ancient places and especially rich in different cultures.
I'm german and from Bavaria (close to the Alps) and here we still celebrate pre-christian pagan traditions and every single time an american tourist happens to come here during any of these pagan traditions by accident and takes part or watches they always say things like "Oh wow, i had no idea this existed, none of my travel guides and books i read mentioned any of this."
Which is somewhat sad that american but also other travel guides ignore the ancient and deeply cultural events all over Europe. Usually people only come to Bavaria knowing about "Oktoberfest" and "Schloss Neuschwanstein".
The same goes for other areas and not only Bavaria, Germany. There are also pre-christian 1000+ year old festivities and traditions practiced every year in parts of Austria, Slovakia, France, Romania (especially the transylvanian region), Bulgaria etc.
We always are happy when some american tourists end up watching or taking part in these ancient traditions, because nobody advertises it for some reason, they always just end up experiencing it by accident.
I point this out here because i see it more and more often among american media claiming that there is barely anything cultural in Europe nor anything endangered, which is not true.
Recently a french photographer made it his mission to visit most of these pre-christian pagan traditions and festivities and take pictures.
Just google: Charles Fréger - Wilder Mann
Or check on youtube for traditions we have here in Bavaria like "Perchtenlauf" and if you ever come here, make sure to come by and experience it, it doesn't cost anything either and you'll learn a lot about something US and other worldwide media sadly ignores.
In Croatia there are also many things and traditions to see of the same vein that no travel guide seems to talk about sadly. Lots to explore over all.
      Grüß di from Bavaria

Yess.. we have beautiful sea... luckily I live on it, otherwise, if I was inland, then I would be only visited this place newer in my life too.

We are proud people! So proud you could not even tell us things in-joke, because, it is our Christian right to be offended if you joke about our shit other nations let go in the past (proud example is WW2 and NDH, but every other topic would do too) So yes.. just be lucky to be in right part of the town and start that conversation... boy you would have so many memories to tell your grandchildren then!!! Probably you would laugh at that incident too, in some 10 years when your memory of that trauma would be clouded.

    Don't compare Croats with Serbs.

    • @TheCriminalViolin
      @TheCriminalViolin 6 років тому +28

The problem is, you don't realize that the perspectives you get, and the "facts" you get about the recent history there is incredibly skewed & manipulated via your own government's propaganda, which is obviously being made to try to make Serbia look like a victim and a otherwise grand nation. And the nationalism you & the rest of serbs have prevents you from taking notice of this fact.
It's like most nations. The US manipulates and makes false statements and claims ALL THE TIME about itself in order to get it's own people to think that their government and country is the best of the best, and they never do anything bad or wrong, while pushing that propaganda bs onto other nations they decide their people should hate. And with the gruesome amount of nationalism the average US citizen holds themselves, they of course never question it.
This is always how dictatorships form as well. Throughout history, the Nationalist agendas of each nationalist nation used this nationalism to isolate, self-glorify, and then manipulate information as it came in in order to control the citizen's feelings, opinions & beliefs about history, their country, other countries, other beliefs and other peoples. And with such nationalism, it's pretty much set in stone most of the people within that nationalistic nation will never even think to question almost anything their government and media tells them.
Serbia is a mimic of the US, Turkey & China in a lot of ways, and this is one of them. Nationalist, Self-Righteous Propaganda, and their citizens eat it all up immediately without hesitation, because "of course it's the truth!".
If one was able to find their ways around the controlled and heavily contorted information, perspectives and history they've been fed, they'd finally see a endless heap of information, history and perspectives throughout time that'd immediately contradict everything the person has ever known, since their information and history is so heavily propaganda based lies. I did this here, and I read so much information and history, perspectives, and documentation across the south slavic region, including all sorts of Serbian stuff, and unfortunately, there are only two nations history that simply does not line up with the history prior to the history in focus, which is the last roughly couple hundred years, but especially the last 125 or so years there. Those two nations? Serbia, and Albania.
Everyone elses lines up with prior history, it all makes perfect sense, it all perfectly correlates with each other. And, they each correlate and match up with each other's. The only two that do not yet again is Serbian and Albanian. Serbia is probably the most different one by a long shot too. Not even Italy, nor Romania, Hungary, nor Austria last I checked matched a single bit of Serbian information and history. It's so far out there. And it's all making itself look like it was the only victim from all the things everywhere else notes your country did to the others, namely Croatia and Bosnia.
Now Croatia did indeed begin a vicious assault during the "last" war in the 90s against Serbia, but as a defensive retaliation against Serbia attempting to launch genocide of Croats in Croatia. Serbia attempted this once they got the world's attention on their genocide of Bosnians. It was a reactive defense they launched on Serbia at the time in a rushed panic, to attempt to prevent Serbia from committing that genocide of the Croatian people within their own country. They saw what Serbia was doing to the Bosnians, and knew that Serbia was attempting to do the very same to them, and they were already late in realizing that Serbia was already well on it's way to beginning that genocide of Croats. Like a heavily abused dog trapped in a corner, they when into a panicked defense mode. The quickly after the war ended admitted that that specific action was wrong, but they know that there isn't much else one could've expected them to do in such a panicked rush to save their own country and people from the Serbian invasion.
But that is the only horrible thing the Croatians did to Serbia, let alone to anyone else. It was in a panicked defense. And they own up to the fact it wasn't a acceptable response. Serbia? Serbia still pretends they never even committed the genocide of the Bosnians. The entire world was watching the Serbians do it live, and it was then passed onto us later generations. To pretend like something the entire world saw & witnessed did happen is arguably the most incredibly immature and arrogant thing Serbia could possibly do. Yet here they are, still demanding it never happened to this very day. What they did to the Bosnians was what they wanted to do to the Croats, which caused the Croats to react defensively once they found this out. They, like any other country were NOT going to just lay back and allow it to happen as the Bosnians did. The Bosnians didn't do anything about it at all until VERY late, when the UN FORCED them into military action again Serbia and their mass genocide of Bosnians. Bosnia did NOT want another war. They didn't want any war. Yet they ended up being forced into the war very late by the UN. the Croats saw what Serbia was doing to Bosnia and would not accept sitting idly by and let it happen like the Bosnians did. It's as simple as that, oddly enough.
So the claims that Croatia is evil, was a Nazi puppet, etc is plain false, and is well-known Serbian propaganda, which they demand to continue to churn out every single day to the world and continue to pretend it is all actual facts, when it couldn't be further from the truth.
the hard reality is, Serbia was the nation Serbia claims Croatia was.
And sadly, proving governments control and manipulated what "facts" and "history" you see, the US recently switched out all info and "history" on the south slavic region for Serbian made propaganda, which is known as self-righteous lies.
Originally, one could actually easily find and study ALL south slavic countries perspectives, information, history and facts about it all. That's how I was able to read and study it all. Thus also how I know it was very recent. It was only a few months ago it was still without any biased info and history. no doubt this is definitely a predictable Donald Trump move, since he has always long adored authoritarian leaders and countries who perpetually churn out their own self-righteous lies we all call propaganda.

You hit it on the nail! A few years ago , I went to Croatia with a friend who's father was from there . We ended up having a local drive us from Zadar into the town of Nin where his dad lived . The local needed to ask for directions to find the precise street..... so the local stopped to ask another local for directions, and to me it sounded like they were arguing and wanted to kill eachother ! But it turned out they were just conversing normally... fun times ! I would love to go back

    • @LuvBorderCollies

I used to have Chinese neighbors and they conversed the same way. They'd be in the back yard working the garden, but sounding like ready to kill each other. lol

Croatia is absolutely beautiful. We sailed from Monfalcone to Pula with several port calls along the way, and it was the best vacation I've ever had. If you've ever thought about visiting, do it, you won't be disappointed.

It is beautiful, but beauty isn't everything. The place gets overrun by over 20 MILLION tourists (mostly Germans) during the summer season. You can't even get a room for less than $300 if they're available at all. And the food is not good. It's super overpriced, over hyped and rarely tasty at all.

The restaurant tip is a lie. In Croatia, service and tip is already included in price by default (most of the time that fact is stated on the price list). Nobody will refuse the tip (I myself prefer to tip if I'm *really* satisfied with the service), but you are not obliged to tip.

    • @SigmaSigmaBoy-m2b
