Viktor's Tale - John Williams, arr. Frank Markey. Performed by Bert Six on Eb Alto Clarinet, accompanied by Claribel Clarinet Choir (conducted by Guido Six)
I'm an oboist but took up the alto clarinet on a whim as a second instrument when I felt like I needed a break and just play something in the background with the community orchestras I played in. Love the instrument, especially the low range notes. Wish it would get more respect and attention.
In the past often the alto clarinet was not given the attention in design and manufacture devoted to the rest of the family. Many poor instruments were produced. With subsequent improvements in design and care in manufacturing, its voice deserves to heard...not divided beteen the soprano and bass clarinets.
+Robert W both instruments (oboe and clarinet) have their challenges but I'd lean towards the oboe as being easier - partially because it's my main instrument and I'm more comfortable with it. Obviously with the oboe, it all boils down to the reed - but the fingering system is really easy and natural. With the clarinet, while the reed isn't as much an issue, I find I have constant problems playing the Bb-B natural break. So in regards to reed issues, clarinet is easier - but in regards to fingering, oboe is way easier.
How wonderful. I have never heard or seen a performance by a clarinet ensemble. I played B Flat Clarinet for four years and was recruited by my high school's band director to play the E Flat Alto Clarinet in my Junior year for Symphonic Band. I loved playing this instrument! I also played E Flat Alto Saxophone during the football season that year when we were the school's marching band.
Your giving alto the voice that they need you play it very well and I hope to one play that not as well as you but maybe I love the alto clarinet it's awesome and need to more like this and have more respect and one day it will
Jay animuu I've played the Bb soprano, Bass clarinet, and contra alto in concert. Contra alto by far the hardest but coolest. Though I played soprano clarinet and bass clarinet also in my high school's musical when we did Shrek the Musical. THAT was fun, great bass part
I love them too, but had to stop playing when my source of ensembles dried up after graduation. But by accident I recently noticed an ad for a Le Blanc alto... $1,170!! Good grief!
I have watched many clarinet choirs perform, but I have never seen one this amazing. Great job on the alto clarinet solo. It makes me want to learn how to play it myself.
I played the B flat alto through high school and college, making all bands probably because of the relative rarity of the instrument :- ) I started out on the B flat clarinet, but once I head an alto's brief solo in a concert piece we were playing, my interest was piqued. I managed to find a couple of reeds for the alto and asked the owner if I could try my hand. We happened to be on a landing of a stairwell, so the acoustical effect was that of a deep and haunting echo. From there, I never looked back. In the lower ranges, it has no equal. I would, however, suggest the higher notes in the upper register alone if possible. Leave those to the B flat crowd :- )
"Who's on first?" "B. Six." "No, not the chord. Who's playing the solo part?" "B. Six. That's the name of the guy playing the solo on this piece." "What else can you tell me about the piece?" "It's in four conducted by Six." "How can you conduct something in six if it's written in four?" "No, it's conducted by Six. Six is the name of the conductor." "I thought Six was the name of the soloist." "Yes, but this is G. Six." "Wait, the key changed from B to G?" "No, it's B flat." "Oh, he sounds in tune to me."
Thank you--fabulous player and piece. I'm a trumpeter for many years. Recently I'm feeling a calling to play alto clarinet. I have one, repadded and adjusted, but boy I can't play much on it. :(
I like how the tempo is slower than in the movie. Very nice clarinet choir. That last scale in the cadenza has been mangled before on UA-cam---you want to just rip up to the top but watch out!
@ Just a Mordecai Guy ...agree about lack of parts, however it's pretty easy to convert bass clef music (especially tuba) for use on the alto clarinet, which is what I did - I covered bassoon and tuba parts as we had neither instrument and often those parts matched up nicely with what our bass clarinetist was playing.
timemanification actually I avoided using alto sax music because a lot of it (at least the pieces I played) hovered too much around the annoying B-C break on the alto clarinet. Bass clef music transposed seemed better suit to take advantage of the lower register.
Such an under-appreciated instrument. I'm glad to be one of it's players.
TLB Productions i just got my dream alto clarinet its so good
Basset horn is better
OMG I DIDNT KNOW THERE WERE MORE OF MY KIND
Alto clarinet is quickly becoming my new favorite thing to listen to...
Lower Clarinets blending on point. No stick outs.

which do you find easier to play - a double or single reed instrument?

Like the low notes? You might like bass clarinet and the lower clarinets. Ever had a chance to try one? I play bass and I've tried the contra-alto.
+Nathan Hollis BBb Contrabass is where it's at.
I play the Alto clarinet.
and this is my inspiration and example
I love it.😍🙌😊👏👏👏

Amazing tone quality, blending is perfect, I'm in love!!
I see a contra alto! Ah, im glad I play alto and contra alto clarinet. Both beautiful instruments.

Awesome!!! Love the alto!!!!
BEAUTIFUL SOUND. AMAZING CHOIR.
This makes me proud!😻
This is great. I'm glad it is not too fast because some other recordings are too fast and it sounds bad.

true
I would have to agree with you. I just got started and am very dissapointed very few pieces include it now.
I really enjoy this performance - is this arrangement available for purchase anywhere?
I like it!!! is possible to get the score??? ):
Jose Ignacio Campos from the movie "The Terminal" perhaps?:)
Where might I find the score?
I need the score and parts for this piece.

Anyone know what brand that alto clarinet it?
I'd really like to know also!!!
Beautiful playing.
What mouthpiece are you using? Not a lot of choices out there. I have a Grabner which I like, but still curious.
vandoren b44 but recently i found a rare chas bay and its awesume
Oh i see, this is instrument on "the terminal" movie....
Is it just me or is anyone else picking up some Harry Potter vibes?
An orchestra of only clarinets… fascinating
It is sad that the Alto Clarinet fell out of favor in traditional public school band music.
🤨🤨🤨
Excellent, haunting and unique!
