To be honest, it really doesn't matter where you ground it, just so you ground everything the same place, I often use the battery ground. If for some reason, it's difficult to back probe the low reference. Typically, you will get a good signal. The tool is very sensitive to any kind of ground loop or voltage drop in the ground circuit so keeping everything grounded at the same place keeps wierd interactions from happening.
