    Remember when Zam hit the woodcarving scene. Jewlers rouge was the mainstay.

    Carpenter for 35 years. All my tools were sharp we didnt use strops . Started carving when i retired. Lol what a wonderful thing, strops are. i do use a thin leather one. I made it myself so it has a curve on one side and tight 45 to 50 degree on the other , but i also use wood for a lot of my odd shaped gouges. Good video . Lots of people dont understand strops or what they do or what types of materials they can be made from. Brown paper bags over flat materials also strops very nice the material under the bag can be steel , or whatever as long as it flat and some what stiff.

    I've been using MDF to do this for years with my carving gouges and turning tools. Green on one side and white on the other side. And a few different sizes of dowl rods to use for interior bevels. I also have an MDF wheel in my bench grinder for honing knives.

    High Alec, yet more great handy tips 👌 thanks.
    O'h, by the way, thanks to you😊 I spent a few quid, the flexcut skew knife, O'h yes what a great little knife this is, amazing for those fine cuts and little bits and pieces and super super sharp, even sharper after a little lite strop on my good strop and white compound.
    Glad I watched your videos.
    Thanks mate 👍
    Cheers 🍻 Les.

    I think of the Barber stroping using a long belt attached to fixure on the wall. Now I'm wondering if he uses a compound? Is it necessary to use a compound?

    • @mikejake6360
      @mikejake6360 Місяць тому +4

      Compound speeds up the process significantly. Technically you could polish a piece of metal with a t-shirt but without polishing compound it takes forever

    My fancy leather strop is a scrap of veg tan glued to a block of poplar I had laying around. For my leather edge bevelers I use a line of string with compound on it. Are there really fancy strops out there?

    • @AlecLaCasseArt
      @AlecLaCasseArt  Місяць тому

      I’ve seen some pretty fancy ones that cost an arm and a leg!! Sounds like you have a great setup! Doesn’t have to be expensive to be great!

    Thanks Alec. How does yellow compound compare to the green?

    • @AlecLaCasseArt
      @AlecLaCasseArt  Місяць тому

      The yellow is typically a fairly aggressive cutting compound but a good choice as well!

    No comments about sandpaper? Carving advice is to leave sanding your work till you finished the knife work so the last thing I'd be doing is roughing up a stopping surface with sandpaper.
