The best two opening moves are "12+35=47" and "90/6 - 7=8". These two moves give you EVERY DIGIT 0-9, three out of the four math operations (+,-,/) and the location of the equals sign (the "=" is in the third from the right if it's not in either of the final two right positions)

Better openings are 24/3+1=9 and 7*8-0=56 It gives all numbers and all operations

Regina - I wish you finished the nerdle you demoed. does the equation always use 2 digit numbers? I see you put 03 for a 3. Can you show how a multiplication might fit in? Thanks for getting me started.

Yes, but some also contain several one digit numbers, and even one 3 digit number.
