Astonishing piece of music! The Moderato features flourishes from flute, woodwinds, percussion, harp and trumpet suggesting some kind of awakening/gathering. Surging strings, punctuated with brass and percussion, lead to a broad, albeit short, melody (7:04-7:44) reminiscent of John Williams, the film composer. Shimmering strings and tuned percussion begin the central Adagio which, from 12:28-19:07, recalls mystical Bartokian "night music" to these ears. The final Allegro has an American-sounding, jaunty, rhythmic melody which develops euphorically before settling into an otherworldly harp cadenza and a final march-like close with full orchestra. A magnificent and compelling composition!!
@@crazyorganist1609 The similarity in style to early Tippett is obvious. It's not intended as a criticism - and Mathias could still have been inspired by the Welsh landscape as well!
He uses similar instruments to John Williams in his film scores. The only issue which I don't like with Mathias' music is it is such a mixed-up without going into one direction and changes too quickly. It is components put together that doesn't suit.

The harp part is just so seemlessly and naturally flowing with the orchestra….what a gorgeous work!!!!

One listen to the Dance Overture will change your mind.. Tight, beautifully constructed, lovely and moving all at once.
