Was following the updates for a couple years until they slowed down. Eventually they just stopped. The website also disappeared after a while. I hope this comes back some day. The team he showed in Update #2 was genuinely really cool.
It is criminal how little recognition this is getting
Alex Langrock wait a couple of weeks and it'll get a million views
Alex Langrock then share it
The pacing needs work, other things.
Furness Prime In what regard? Too slow, too fast? Or are some things out of order
It has more to do with just the attention levels I have when on UA-cam--- if this was a trailer at the start of a movie, that I had already sat down and invested time into watching I think the pacing would be great.
But-- when I watched this I was just clicking through looking for content, and it seemed a little to slow to grab my attention it peaked my interested enough tp thumb through the time line though, which makes me think it is pacing, and not so much lack of interest in the content itself.
Angela's voice acting is incredibly professional and it's very easy to believe her pain
I still go back to this once in a while. I was so captivated the first time I watched it, still am. It's sad that this so few views, it deserves a lot more. This episode alone has so much worldbuilding that makes me want to see more of it. There will probably never be a part 2, but Song in the Sky will always be one of my favorite animations.
I'm speechless. Just speechless. Well done Sam, well done.
Thefunmuffin this is awesome:)
If you can ensure a good continuation of the story and a fair time schedule I would be willing to donate either through crowdfunding or patreon.
My one complaint, (and this is very minor) is that the explosions and smoke crossed the Uncanny Valley and looked too real and out of place. Otherwise, I freaking LOVED it!
To this day this is still one of my favourite animations on UA-cam, even though we only get a brief glimpse into this world, its still thoroughly captivating
This is shockingly well acted. There are Hollywood professionals that wish they were this good
When I read "Pilot" I expected to find an overly ambitious animation student side project, not an actual pilot *already* worthy of being put on television, you know. Not with actually god animation, interesting plot an characters, music and voice acting, goddamit. I'm so very invested in Angela's personal story, as well as the Old Ones that lurk below the clouds!
This is amazing. I'm so glad UA-cam algorithms brought me here. Thanks, UA-cam gods.
This will be one of the first videos were I comment like this. But oh my gosh this is great. I wasn't going to take it seriously first but...the voice acting was amazing, the animation fit, and...I can't even get started on how the lore immediately pulled me in. I want to know so much more about the world let alone the character. Is there anything when they fall? Where did those beings come from? Why do those huge crystals make things float? Are there more? AGH SO MANY QUESTIONS! The total dark nature of this pilot just totally tells you of the rough journey that would follow if this becomes a show. I could totally see this on Netflix and I would love to see this become a series. I could totally get hooked on this. I'm so looking forward to it. I'm so happy to see a show go this direction in terms of plot.
I’m getting some serious Neon Genesis Evangelion vibes from this. The creature looks very angel-like and the overall look looks pretty Evangelion. I absolutely love how her PTSD is displayed! It’s both emotional and realistic.
That's exactly what I was going to say
The ships are similar to Last Exile, the enemy is Evangelion, the ambiance and the ships like Sky Crawlers...
I have so many theories floating around in my head. Why are not more people getting note of this??? We need to spread the word! And this needs to get pitched to... anyone! I want more of this world.
This had so much potential, and hinted at such fascinating lore. It's truly a tragedy that there won't be any more.
I am still enthralled by your work. Are you still with us? Hope you are well.
I came here after watching The Dom's latest vid and dear fucking god this looks amazing. Good job on this srsly. The screams gave me goosebumps and im already invested in the main chara and story.
Thank you! That really means a lot. I'll be releasing an update on the series in the next day or two, so keep your eyes peeled!
RebelTaxi just made a video featuring this and now that I watch it, it's astounding. I really hope someone picks this up.
Same here my dude.
Sol Campbell, I really want adult swim/Toonami or fxx to make it to series plus this could show more adult cartoons aren't comedies.
Same for me too
You've nailed effectively everything that means something for a pilot: the characters, the world, and the atmosphere. Sure the visuals are a bit unpolished and the sound design may need some fine tuning, but those aspects aren't final and will likely change anyways. I like and have a good understanding of the characters, I was chilled by the weeping eldritch abomination and the introduction, and I'm interested by the world's attitude with the lying to request air support and with the fear of divine intervention.
This was a wonderful watch and possibly one of the finest pilots I've seen, right up there with Final Space. I hope you get picked up.
at this point, we badly need an investigation on his silence
Mental health issues, as far as I'm aware.
this is one of the best things youtube has recommended me
RebelTaxi dropped me off here, and I'm so glad he did.
It did the opposite for me
I hope this ends up being like final space and gets its own Netflix series (although this looks extremely high quality and the story looks actually amazing unlike final space)
Like a lot of people, I came thanks to the Dom and I'm so happy I did.
It's amazing ! The story is so good, I really want to see more of it because it seems very promising. The kind of Steampunk designs and the old gods look very intriguing.
The voice acting is simply amazing, especially for Angela. For a video this short, the characters seem very fleshed-out, I felt more attached to them in 10 minutes than a majority of the main characters in movies.
I just want to say this looks incredible, even if the animation seems limited, it still looks gorgeous.
I really adore the universe you created, and I really hope this pilot will lead to a real series. I'd watch it without any hesitation.
Sorry for my restricted vocabulary, and hi from France ! Keep up the good work because it's amazing !!
Ilona you speak better English than most Americans, Frenchman. Keep it up yourself!
Who is this 'Dom' you speak of? I learnt of this though the Thirteenth Crusade!
SPaMuRai GRaNaTaBRu The Dom. He's a sweet British chap and very charismatic. If you already know and are being playful, then ha!
YOUFREAKINNERD Agreed on both points!
No i'm being serious, i found this channel through his old thirteenth series!
My teacher made us watch this in class and I am so glad she did it. This is so good for an indie movie, the animation is gorgeous, the voice is so good and the story has so much potential. I really hope it becames a show, cause I would totally watch it. Great work
You know how Monty Oum started...a small passion project, followed by another, then he became a legend. I see that for you here.
Let's just hope Sam doesn't give his project over to any friends of his who fuck it up in the event he dies.
Soarel Yeah, Volume 5 is a prime example of that.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn
All these 2 year old comments, just a 2020 here saying, I hope this project is still going! Can't wait for another episode! But seriously why doesn't this have more views?? It's so epic! Darn you UA-cam, you'll recommend the craziest things to people! Start recommending this!
gives me an evangleion vibe
Yeah, there's definitely a lot of anime influence in this project. If you have the chance, check out Last Exile, Kino's Journey, and Now and Then Here and There. They're wonderful shows that inspired me a lot
UniversalHeat would you ever do a video talking about your infulences
already watched all those try the Princess and the Pilot and Pilots Lovesong both take place in the same universe have flying ships and dogfights you might get some good inspiration from it
And suddenly Cruel Angel's Thesis starts playing off key in the background during any of the more humerous moments, if any.
And suddenly Cruel Angel's Thesis starts playing off key in the background during any of the more humerous moments, if any.
WHO DO WE GIVE MONEY TO?!????
Ever since those Pivot animations all those years ago, you've evolved.
From Outbreak, to the 13th Crusade, to Scorched Earth to this. It's amazing. You've come so far. I remember those day's where I'd come to your channel when I was bored, first finding Outbreak. It was ahead. Kudos to you.
lemme guess, we're still waiting for an update?
Don't forget his other shorts, like Rabbit Hole.
I keep coming back hoping more views would arrive. This needs more recognition damn it!
It's sad to still see no update or any indication that things are going okay, but I'll continue to keep checking out this pilot every so often. It's got immense potential to be something amazing!
I just posted an update to my patreon!
@@samuelfrederich9415 Oh! I just read it. I wish you the best and sorry if my comment was disrespectful, wasn't sure where to look for info
Godspeed!
Uhh what happend?
This is without hyperbole one of the best animated shorts I’ve ever seen-one of the best animations I’ve ever seen. I so desperately wish this had proceeded as a series because got-damn is it good. The writing, story, animation, direction, voice acting is all so good. I was immediately pulled in by the story and the backstory it’s hinting at. I love that the main character is a trauma survivor and her portrayal is so realistic. I would love to see this story continuing in some other form like comics if it can’t be picked up as a series.
The Dom sent me here. Anyone else?
heyyy
'Yep, glad he did too
Ditto.
Reporting in!
Right here, mate
three. years.
and we still dont have our promised episode 2
or any update video in almost 2 years
Holy shizz, the Dom was right about this. I hope this makes it past pilot.
SAME
Hello Fenn
who is the Dom?
I love this and hate myself for not watching it sooner.
i love this animated pilot so much, it just appeals to some of my particular niches the way many others don't
i love warfare, specifically the aerial aspect of it
i can see how there's a passionate world that's been built here, a world that's been considered times over
attention to audio, the gunfire, explosions, horrific screaming, voice acting are not afterthoughts
Somewhere, in a Parallel Universe, we got the second Episode and even a whole Season...
ITS OUT, ITS FREE ON HIS PATRION I CAN SEND YOU A LINK
It's like Madoka Magica when it comes to the art style. The style might not be everyone's favorite, but the story and delivery are so good that it doesn't throw anything off.
I was thinking the monster sounded like Walpurgisnacht too, the crying/screaming/laughing sound.
Was thinking that, too.
Rebeltaxi brought me here 3 years ago when he did a video on cartoon pilots.
I got curious about this one, so I looked it up...and was astounded by what I saw. I still re-watch this pilot time and time again and still enjoy it all the same.
One day, I'll see this world again...
One day, I'll hear the song that I, and many others, have awaited for so long.
I'm still waiting for part 2
I check back occasionally hoping for an update. Hope everyone is doing well even if this isn't progressing.
You just got shouted out by RebelTaxi, here comes the wave.
So, good parts.
I think anybody watching this wants to know what's going on with every single moment. the city(?), the tree, the ground, the crystal, The captain looking guy, the cloak guy with the seemingly unfortunate voice acting, the Evangelion cross Vexus "Verse 8", the falling, the worse than falling, the Andy, the god killer, the flashbacks... and yes, almost forgot, the most absolutely in your face LOOK, LOOK HEY GUYS WHO'S THAT????????????? :OOO
THE. GODS. DAMN. HELEN.
Everything makes me want to know more. You led with an abstract, kept the undertone of what might happen, peppered with mystery at a steady pace until it hit the crescendo of what is guaranteed to happen.
Really cool. Where do i send my money?
The Ok
art style is fine, it's a minor criticism at best, especially when you did this yourself. But if (Read: when) you get picked up it begs to be stylized a bit. Most of the designs are good both far away and close up; you put nice detail (Even if it felt a bit same-y) on the interior of Angelas' Albatross(?) and on the "Verse 8." The style overall just needs another dimension of detail added in my opinion, but in all honestly, i wouldn't mind if the series was like this. Animation is ok, for one person it's fine.
I tried to come up with a reason for why it needed more detail, but i couldn't. I just think something with this kind of potential deserves it I guess.
The not good.
My man, we got it from the first time you showed us the Albatross's control panel, Helen. Yes. I really do think we got that. Hearing "tell me about Helen" in her head was good, but if you really felt you had to drive it home, don't have the rocket "for Helen" freeze for an awkward amount of seconds. The drama is there, let the rocket go full speed.
"Not again." please consider cutting out these cliche addendums. Trust your audience that they can recognize that it was going to be a "Not again" moment by the structure and tone of the conversation.
You actually did this correctly with the cloaked guy saying, (Paraphrasing) "We soon shall see," with reference to there being "things worse than falling." This is because we didn't know the carrier didn't have a crystal, or if it did it was about to be destroyed anyway.
Other minor tropes that, really, who cares?
Can NOT wait to see more... and again, where do i send my money?
Really good points my man. This is only the pilot, let's hope the final product is 100x times better.
Brain-washed finally someone says they were sent by the slime monster Pan
Why does this not have a million-plus views?
This pilot is Final Space levels of amazing.
its far less comedic and far more dramatic than final space.
For sure. I don't think this series needs much comedy, though a joke here or there would be welcome.
I meant my overall levels of enjoyment were the same if not greater when I watched this when compared to the Final Space pilot. I can't wait for more.
i feel like this would be a very tragic show.
I think he meant in terms of quality.
ObsidianMadman no, this is as amazing as all the parts of the later episodes of adventure time you like to remember
Watching again after 3 years. Still awesome and I still want to know more about this world.
This was breathtaking. The mysterious creatures and setting paired with what seems to be a formerly strong protagonist haunted by something in her past and her current PTSD made this pilot no less than perfect. I would love to see this picked up by a network and would love to lend my support and help this series any way I can.
there's so much I can take it and make assumptions about just by the small details and dialogue each scene contains.
It's also not every day you see something with this kind of style animation and very much potential and it's story and universe that are being shown every minute.
Just thought about this cartoon out of the blue today and came back to give it another watch. I saw it the day it was first published and I'm still hyped for what's next! Keep on doing your thing, Sam!
This is awesome. Got here via Captain Moriah. Sarah Fiete just did a 45-min interview with Sam Frederich that dropped today.
Hey! A recent hearted comment! That means he’s still alive!
Came here because of the Dom's review. And I'm so happy to have seen this. Hopefully, this can become a full series.
I found this channel years ago because of outbreak 1921. Came back today to see what if anything you had been up to. Completely blown away by how much time and effort was put into this. Amazing. I'm excited to see how this series keeps going!
I heard about this from Mr. Enter, then shared it with my online movie watching group in the "pre-show" before the main event. We rated it ★★★ out of 4.
It's pretty good! I like the combination of cute slightly abstract art, creepy monstrosities for the villains, and angsty story. I'd love to see where this could go if it becomes a series!
Saw this on Dust a while back, thought it was amazing, top 2 favorite. Then I saw "Part I" in the credits. Now that I know there's supposed to be more, I need it.
I really liked this. You and your team touched on something about the sentient condition with this bleak (though aesthetically colorful) fantasy steampunk world, showing pain, loss, partnership and resolve and an entire society struggling to make ends meet in a time of strife, with a larger picture of implication for actions and choices, and a world with sentient AI and where, from what we can tell from the pilot, a normalization of wider expanse of sexuality. I was teary eyed through most of this thing. I also personally enjoyed the animation style a lot, it didn't take anything away from the execution of the story for me, and this episode left me with a lot of questions about the world you've built, and the origins of the state of the world in the pilot! Would love to see more.
Urchinow de la Résistance it’s one man making this
^what the guy above said
XD yeah, I realized that after writing, I was trying to get that even though he's responsible for a lot of it I wanted to give the thanks that is due for the awesome acting and sound mixing and music performance and bouncing ideas around and support
Hazbin gets 10M views, but this only gets 100k? ITS BEEN A YEAR. How disappointing :(
Dude this is insanely amazing! The atmosphere, animation and worldbuidling. I definitely can't wait for MORE!
Superb work as always Sam!
Thanks! I really put a lot into this one, so I'm really glad you enjoyed it
This actually made my day, the mysterious tone and all the action, it all hooked me in a lot. I've been following you since your early pivot days, of outbreak 1921. Even before I had a youtube account.
I can say, even more than huge production shows, your creations are a lot of what keep me interested in animation. Seeing your stuff always makes think of trying to learn to animate "for real this time". Who knows, maybe one of these days ;)
That means so much, thank you for your kind words :) And as for animating, not to be too cliche, but just do it! I'm actually kind of terrible at drawing and I'm still getting by. If I can do it, you can probably do it ten times better!
This animated series pilot was recommended by another UA-camr, Dominic Noble, not 5 minutes ago. It is so good! I hope you get this series off the ground with lots of support and budget. I love animation and sci-fi. Cheers!
Just curious is the design inspiration of Angela plane based on the Kyushu J7W? or maybe the XP-55 Ascender?
They (writers/director) never told but possibly be a J7W
Looks a lot like a Shinden
Its definitely a devastator
Edit: yes i know the devestator was based on those planes as well. I just want to pretend my favorite game lives on
Eyyy! Iron!
How the UA-cam algorithm hasn’t blown this and your channel up I don’t know. I’ll definitely share this with my buddies!
Holy crap that may have been the best thing I've watched in a long while. Get this to Netflix or someone stat! I need to know what happens next!
Wtf that was so good!
UA-cam why aren't you recommending this!?
I've been looking for this for quite a while. I watched it randomly a few months after it was uploaded and loved it, but kinda forgot about until recently, and I couldn't remember the name.
And after all this time, it's still as good as I remember.
a work of art, the Dom sent me here and I'm so happy he did. This is something that I genuinely am looking forward to seeing more of. Amazing job!
Will this ever return? It’s been four years since the update….
ITS OUT, ITS FREE ON HIS PATRION I CAN SEND YOU A LINK
The Dom's review sent me here, and I'm so happy it did. This was wonderful story telling and I would love to see more. The mythos and the characters drew me in, and the voice acting was phenomenal. I especially enjoyed the song layered throughout the story. Great job, and I hope there is more to come.
I'm getting a Destiny vibe from this and its dope. The Crystal breaking apart reminds me of the dying Traveler in the Last City, and her friend is like her Ghost, and those weird monsters are like The Fallen. Call me crazy and whatever but anyways, this was really dope
i've been looking for that's "summer breeze" like hungry and sad dogs, crying, when forgot the name of the film and that truck.... :'( and then.. after months, finally found and oh!
I could see this as an actual cartoon show in the future
This is great!
I just came to this thanks to a link in a comment, and this animation is awesome, it has a good story, an excellent voice acting, a good visual effect, there were moments when I really felt the tension they felt at that moment the characters, hope this get the recognition that deserve and more, great job from you and the people involved, I wish good luck to you and your project
This is absolutely amazing. I was brought here by RebelTaxi and I have to say, I have never been as excited for any sort of potential series than I have been for this. Please keep us updated as times goes on, I seriously have to see what happens next!
Kickstart this. Please. I will totally support. This was incredible. You accomplished so much world building in 10 minutes I'm blown away.
I would watch the crap out of this
This is the best animated thing I have ever seen.
Omg its so good. Its so mysterious and the atmosphere is so foreboding that im hooked on it.
This is amazing. Absolutely amazing. This needs to be a full show, I can see so many people getting into this. Looking forward to your next projects, keep up the amazing work.
Already hooked! Can't wait to see what the future holds.
Wishin' you the best of luck!
This just popped up on my recommended list and i am really glad that it did. This looks absolutely stunning! The voice acting is amazing the animation is smooth, and the story seems like its going to be really awesome even what we see now is amazing.
Holy sh*t man! your work is amazing. I would binge watch the hell out of this!!! It is outstanding work! I'm so glad you submitted it to The Dom for review cause otherwise I might never had come across it and that would be a serious disappointment I wouldn't even know I had. It's far superior from a lot of professional stuff I watched before and it deserves to become a full series with a serious budget! Love the characters, love the story, love Andy (serious Alphonse Elric feels and I LOVE Alphonse!).
Congrats!!! And once again... amazing work!!!
Just shared this with a bunch of my discord servers and found this video after it was covered in Pan's most recent Best/Worst top 3. Its a very intriguing world you've setup here with some very grim implications and I want more! Best of luck to you, and I hope you are able to get this picked up by a production company of some sort. One of the best pilots I have watched in a while.
Holy, this is so immersive! Well done! Love it!
This was fantastic. I felt an incredible amount of emotion from just these 11 minutes. The tone is incredibly well-done. I also think the animation is very stylized and memorable. I can't wait to see more! Great job!
This is why I love Pan -- I don't think I would've ever seen this beautiful piece had he not said something. As for the pilot itself... I really hope it goes somewhere. I'd definitely try Netflix, or Hulu, or some streaming service; I think you'd have the best flexibility there.
I will say you also nailed the PTSD symptoms really well, in terms of mood; as someone with it, the audio flashbacks are very... yeah. It's rough. But man, it's nice seeing it shown in a realistic (and beautifully animated) light.
This video was recommended to me by the dom and im glad he did. this has to be one of the best pilots ive ever seen, independent or not. good work my friend and good luck with an episode 2
What's down there? Who's Helen and What happened to her? I NEED TO KNOW! amazing work, I don't have the skill or the knowledge of this particular art form, but this video speaks for itself to all who worked on this you have talent I hope to see another episode in the future.
I need details as well haha!!! This was goooood
+Becky Ricard This is pretty late but here it goes; according to the author's website:
Helen was Angela's lover, she died when an entire island of the city was taken down by one of the Old Gods.
Said island also contained the Keepers Guild, a group of historians and theologians trying to figure out wtf is actually going on with the world by reading between the lines of old songs. The theme song (Summer Breeze, Angela keeps hearing it in her head) was one of the pieces Helen was trying to decipher. Given that we currently only hear tiny pieces of it, I'd assume she died before finishing it.
As for what's down there, nobody knows right now. The last scene shows us that before you get anywhere close to the bottom (if there is even a bottom) there's an abyssal darkness full of possibly still-living god-corpses.
I really hope this continues. I love the style of animation here
The Dom sent me and all I can say is this is brilliant!
You had me on the edge of my seat. I want to learn everything there is to know about this world. Marvelous job! Can’t wait for part 2!
i was sent here from RebelTaxi's new video. This is awesome!
Oh my god...this is so amazing! I hope this series continues! Amazing job!!
Thank the Dom for sending us here, and thank you for making this. I want this series to continue so badly!
This is amazing, I want to see more! Great voice acting, music, world design and intriguing story so far. Deliciously dark.
I swear I've heard these voice actors somewhere. Especially Andy...who...is he human? He's so bubbly and optimistic, I just feel bad for him having to struggle to try to keep Angela "there" and from not drifting away. Which also makes me worried for Angela. Also, she put a scratch on the gear shift, but I don't know why...what is it keeping count of?
Either way, this seems like a very good start and I hope someone does pick this up who also won't request crippling alterations to your vision.
Fluffymiyster I would assume the chalk tallies on her control stick are to mark the highest Verse enemy she's taken down, as once she hears she'll be fending off a Verse 8 she ups the count to match. Presumably the heaviest-hitter she'd fought before was a Verse 6.
Usually those sort of tally marks on vehicles/weapons are to track total kills, but that doesn't appear to be the case here as she incremented the count twice before taking on a single foe.
Fluffymiyster Andy kinda sounds like ren from a game called oxenfree
This is amazing. I pulled it up on my tv to watch it and looooove it.
The voice acting and writing are amazing. I hope to see more!
Came here from The Dom. I agree mostly everything is perfect except the character design style. It's not bad by any means, it just seems kind of out of place for the tone you're going for, kind of comedy kid style. Something a little more expressive and detailed would help a lot. Other than that, it's amazing! The world you set up is fascinating, the direction is exciting, the way information is conveyed is natural. Keep at it, this is something that could work!
Serina Sanchez I actually thought the subdued shapes they built the characters out of and the subtlety in their expressions conveyed the tone well. I disagree completely with the thought that realism is a requirement for mature storytelling or that it only works for comedy. Having more expressiveness would be nice though.
This was amazing. Please PLEASE make more! I neeeeeed it.
I came here after watching The Dom’s review of this. I have to say I agree with pretty much everything he said (I particularly liked Andy), especially about the art style. The voice acting was great- sounded very professional. Show don’t tell - you’ve done it perfectly here. It’s a very interesting idea as well- lot’s of imagination. I’m intrigued and hooked on the story. Amazing job with this!
The sound design was movie worthy and the vibe it gave of was unique, we need more of this!
Rebel Taxi brought me here. Eagerly awaiting part 2.
It's giving me air craft Evangelion and I am LIVING for it. I am so curious to know what these things are
OK, I gotta know.
Did she write "FOR HELEN" on EVERY rocket?
Her plane can only carry one rocket per mission, and this is her first battle since being released from the ward. It's just the one :)
Although she may have written something else on another rocket...
Oh, alright.
Thanks, dude!
UniversalHeat That’s some nice thinking/some good details.
Can’t wait to see how this developes
This is amazing! I came here after hearing the Dom recommend it, and I was not disappointed! I love the blend of fantasy and sci-fi, and I'm intrigued by the story. I would love to see this get better funding, it deserves it!
