  • The V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft.
    The Pentagon concept with future Osprey variants is to build upon the lift, speed, and versatility of the aircraft’s tiltrotor technology and give the platform more performance characteristics in the future. While few specifics were yet available, this will likely include improved sensors, mapping, and digital connectivity, even greater speed and hover ability, and better cargo and payload capacity. Other upgrades will probably see next-generation avionics and new survivability systems such as defenses against incoming missiles and small arms fire.

    My glory days at Sikorsky Aircraft was from the late 1980s thru the early 1990s, when I worked as an A&P Service Mech who also held a class III FAA med certification so before you ask, yes lots of flight time in MH 53 E, CH 53 E, and SM 80 1.
    Thar being said, I am a huge fan of the Osprey, and feel it is a brilliant design.
    Yes, unfortunately there have been crashes involving fatalities, but so have 53s.
    I've seen the white top Presidential Ospreys come by the plant, and am always in awe of the impressive sight and sound of the Osprey.
    This is also the future of vertical lift aircraft, as higher speeds become more of a requirement, along with distance.

    Ospreys better not be stopped but continuously improved, esp enhancements to further lower costs on operation & maintenance. It's currently the only aircraft that can be modified to serve as AEWACS plane on non-CATOBAR carriers of Japan, India, UK, Australia, France... While also can serve as STOVL aircraft befitting on the first island chain where threats that runways will be destroyed IF a hot war breaks out

      Really? "Currently the only aircraft that can be modified to serve as AWACS plane on non-catobar carriers." Why do Italy, and the UK both use Merlin Helicopters as AWACS? India is going to buy the Merlin, as are Australia. The Osprey is way to big for the Spanish, italian, Japanese, Turkish, or Australian carriers. The only other countries that could operate the osprey aer the UK, and france but it's preposterous maintenance costs mean they won't have them. The Merlin is being considered by Australia, Turkey, Japan, and Spain as their sea borne AWACS.

    This beast visited our FOB in Somalia and landed 40metres close to my tent, it blew away and tore my tent into pieces. All my personal effects were scattered away over 300metres

    I love following this!!!! keep it coming! I remember in the 80's making model planes of the time.. always been so interested! and love knowing what our country is doing to protect us! miss the airshows since bein on east coast, not many in my area at all

      Yeah, “protecting us”. Our own government opening our borders wide open two years ago and allowed over 50 million illegal aliens into our country in the within the last decade. Oh yeah, and waging war on their political opposition, censoring their opposition, allowing enemy spy balloons to fly over every one of our military bases and nuke sites and then across the entire country while getting us involved in a proxy war and putting us on the brink of WW3. I wouldn’t necessarily say our country is “protecting” us

    Working at Bell we also had the eagle eye tilt rotor. It was unmanned with a drive system derivative of the huey . Later it was suggested it be used to recover downed pilots with a lowering door in the lower fuselage. Scary but if you have no other options...

    Its a death trap, another crash last month. I remember them trying to get the thing to get the thing to fly since the early 80s. We paratroopers had a saying about the V-22 in the 80s, 'Anything that needed 13 computer to fly had to be unlucky'.

    I'm a big devotee of the "K.I.S.S." (Keep It Simple Stupid) method of system design (any kind of system), sometimes you can't though. I've had the stinkeye towards the Osprey since the beginning of the program. While it's pretty much part of every government program that they end up with a flawed system and think they can "fix it in production", and they usually can. The Osprey has been fairly successful, I think there were probably better designs available (better as in "can do the same jobs as good or better for cheaper").
    I was in the Army, part of the MLRS program in the 80's and again in the early 2000's. That system has evolved so much, the HIMARs is amazing. I'm not sure what the computer is for that Fire Control System (FCS). But, I think as of 2006, it was still like a x286 or x386. Didn't need a ton of compute power for all that firepower.

      That’s another issue. The design prevents you from incorporating forward facing guns. It other words, you would either hit the props or as the case with the floor mounted gun, induce massive vibrations and/or failure.

      @@dougmoore5923 Not necessarily a problem for tiltrotors, you can turn a tiltrotor into a gunship, but this particular design wasn't designed with that in mind.

    I thought it was a gimmick until I researched it. The Navy Procurement system has made it great. It is expensive but has become the world's safest aircraft. By its nature it is faster and has more range than any helicopter. This is because a helicopter is limited by the rotar speed that is the side where the rotar iis advancing cannot exceed the speed of sound. The v22 avoids the critical problem that helicopters face by rapidly transitioning to the aircraft mode while helicopters spend a longet time in an altitude where they can't autorotate if the engine fails.

    6:54 I thought of this idea myself, and I'm glad it's being pursued! Get the best of both worlds, the hover efficiency of a helicopter, with the speed of a jet. Amazing! Definitely has potential to become a gunship as well.

    It's an amazing aircraft. I think it's important to understand the A/C does not have the capabilities as a helicopter landing into confined areas. So Pilots need to be more careful in those environments.

    I was a structural design engineer. I worked on the Osprey in 1984 at Grumman and then in 1986 at Bell, when the project was, at that time, put on hold. It is a very complicated aircraft, in a mechanical sense. I never had a handle on the design overall, and many many hands were laid on that program over the decades. I think it is a mess and will remain a mess. Just my sense of it.

      F-35 was also grounded due to ejection seat problem recently. But it's fixed now. V-22 will be the same.

      Jim Slife has an ulterior motive in issuing the grounding order for the CV-22s as the rare clutch issue has been known about since 2010 and the Marine Corps has developed and implemented procedures to deal with it should it occur. The Marine Corps and the Navy continue to operate their MV-22s and CMV-22s.

      Perhaps you heard that they grounded the entire fleet of CH-47 Chinooks a couple of days ago. Been in service since 1962(60 years). Doesn't mean it is a horrible aircraft. If I'm not mistaken, it is the fastest chopper in the Army, and one of the most successful aircraft of all time.

    What saved it was 9/11.
    A lot of things were "saved" on 9/11.
    When the Cold War ended it was pretty much shut down.
    They had been working on such aircraft since the 1960's.
    There use to be a VSTOL test aircraft on displace at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Oh.
